ALBAWABA - Israeli planes attacked the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza, which was the only Catholic church in the surrounded area. On Friday, Pope Leo XIV called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to voice his great worry and repeat his call for a halt. The strike happened early Thursday morning and killed three people and hurt at least ten more, including Father Gabriel Romanelli, the church priest. The Vatican called the situation in Gaza "tragic," pointing out that children, the old, and the sick are suffering a lot.The Vatican said in a news release that the Pope, who was speaking from his home in Castel Gandolfo, strongly told Netanyahu to work for peace and protect places of worship. The statement said, "The Holy Father stressed again how important it is to protect places of worship, the faithful, and everyone in Palestine and Israel."The call came after the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem made a strong plea for world leaders to "raise their voices" and move quickly to stop what it called a "unjustified human and moral tragedy."
At the same time, the White House revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump had also talked to Netanyahu after what was called a "negative reaction" to the news of the church bombing. It is said that Trump talked to Netanyahu about what happened, which made the Israeli leader say that the attack on the Catholic spot was a "mistake."

White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said that Netanyahu told the president that the bombing wasn't done on purpose and that he was sorry for the deaths of civilians.
The event has caused anger around the world, putting more pressure on Israel to protect civilians and start up new diplomacy efforts to end the 21-month-long war. Pope Leo's repeated pleas show the Vatican's moral stance on the need for peace, protecting religious freedom, and keeping people's respect in times of conflict.

Netanyahu's testimony canceled after food poisoning day before hearings

The Jerusalem District Court has canceled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's scheduled testimony in his ongoing corruption trial, citing his current bout of food poisoning. The hearings, originally set for Monday and Tuesday, will not be rescheduled this week and have been deferred until after the court's summer recess, which ends on September 5. Netanyahu's lawyer, Amit Hadad, submitted a request to delay this week's hearings after the prime minister fell ill Sunday night. While the State Attorney's Office agreed to postpone the sessions and proposed alternative dates for Wednesday and Thursday, the court cited scheduling conflicts and opted to cancel the hearings altogether. This marks yet another delay in Netanyahu's testimony, which began in December 2024. Previous postponements have been attributed to medical issues, the war in Gaza, operations against Iran, international trips, and his responsibilities as head of government. During the summer recess, 'Israeli' courts operate with limited activity, meaning Netanyahu will not return to the witness stand until at least September.

'Genocide in 4K': Oscar-winner Javier Bardem condemns global backing of Gaza attacks

ALBAWABA - In a strong public statement, Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem said that Israel, the US, and European countries were all involved in what he called a "genocide" in Gaza and asked everyone to speak out. He wrote this on an Instagram post: That Israel kills. The United States gives money. "Europe backs." His message came with a video of a guy carrying the body of a child who had been killed by an Israeli airstrike. Bardem made a call to his fans and said: "Respectable people like us need to speak out against this genocide." 'Don't keep quiet; if you do, you're also guilty.' This speech is one of them. At the 2024 San Sebastián Film Festival, Bardem said that he didn't like keeping quiet. He said that the war was a genocide happening "in front of our eyes and in 4K" at the New York opening of the movie F1. He also said that the Israeli government was breaking international law by committing "crimes against humanity." During an interview on ABC's "The View," he said these things again to support his point of view. Bardem's strong stance has been praised by people who fight for human rights around the world, but it has also been criticized by people who back Israel. Even so, he has argued that staying quiet about these kinds of crimes is like betraying humanity.

Sick or Slick? Netanyahu misses trial as Israelis call It a sham

Published July 20th, 2025 - 06:54 GMT ALBAWABA - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not go to a court hearing on Monday that is part of his ongoing trial for corruption. His office said he has a stomach problem from eating bad food, so he will not be there. Legal experts, on the other hand, aren't sure about the comment and say Netanyahu is trying to avoid the courtroom. Also Read Netanyahu phones Pope after striking church attack in Gaza A statement released on Sunday said that Netanyahu felt pain overnight and was checked out at home by Professor Alon Hershko, who is in charge of internal medicine at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. They were told they had a gut infection from eating food that was contaminated. The Prime Minister is now getting fluids through an IV because he is dehydrated. He has been told to rest at home for three days and will still be able to run the government from home during that time. Netanyahu didn't show up to Sunday's cabinet meeting. He was supposed to be in Tel Aviv District Court on Monday to face charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. He usually goes to court twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays. At the end of this week, the Israeli court system will start its summer break, which will last until September. It is still not clear if more trial times will be set during this time. His trial was meant to restart tomorrow. — Sulaiman Ahmed (@ShaykhSulaiman) July 20, 2025 Yael Friedson, a legal affairs writer for Haaretz, questioned when and if the Prime Minister was really sick. He wrote on the social media site X that the announcement "is a continuation of Netanyahu's attempts to avoid cross-examination." She asked the courts to hold hearings during the next break, noting the "extraordinary circumstances" of Netanyahu's frequent absences. Besides the case of corruption, Netanyahu is also under legal pressure from other countries. He was charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with military activities in Gaza by the International Criminal Court on November 21, 2024. They issued an arrest warrant for him. The longtime leader of Israel could go to prison if found guilty in a domestic or foreign court. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (
