Fifa says it has an agreement with soccer players' unions for minimum rest standards
Days before the start of the month-long Club World Cup soccer chiefs faced renewed calls to safeguard players over growing fears of injuries and burnout. Last month France's union of professional soccer players launched a scathing attack on the competition saying it 'is urgent to stop this massacre' amid ongoing concerns about extreme player workloads.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino and other officials from soccer's governing body met with representatives of players' unions from around the world in New York. FIFA hailed the discussions as progressive adding that players' health is a top priority. 'There is a consensus that there must be at least 72 hours of rest between matches and that players should have a rest period / holiday of at least 21 days at the end of each season' FIFA said. 'This period should be managed individually by each club and the respective players also depending on their match calendars and taking into account applicable collective agreements.'
Enforcing a 72-hour period strictly could mean big adjustments to some game schedules and TV deals. FIFA didn't indicate how it would work in practice. European teams playing in the Europa League late Thursday evening routinely play domestic league games on the following Sunday. With a strict 72-hour break they might have to wait until Monday to play again. That would be a major headache for the German Bundesliga. It abolished Monday evening games in 2021 after years of protests by fans who wanted easier-to-attend weekend kickoffs. When it introduced the unpopular Monday kickoffs four season earlier the German league argued it would mean more rest for Europa League teams. The new Bundesliga TV deal starting next season doesn't include any Monday games either.
FIFA added that a rest day per week should also be allowed and that travel demands as well as climate conditions will also factor into future competition planning. The Club World Cup involving 32 of the world's top teams has faced pushback since FIFA announced it would be added to an already saturated calendar. The tournament should be played every four years sandwiched in between the men's World Cup European Championship and Copa America. It went ahead against the backdrop of legal challenges in Europe strike threats and repeated concerns over players' mental and physical welfare due to too many games.

Chelsea crush PSG to claim Club World Cup glory
Chelsea delivered a shocking performance to defeat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, securing their place as pioneers of FIFA's revamped tournament. Palmer's Stellar Performance Cole Palmer emerged as the hero, scoring twice and assisting the third goal to dismantle PSG's high-powered attack. His first strike came in the 22nd minute, capitalizing on Malo Gusto's persistence down the right flank. Palmer doubled the lead 8 minutes later, exploiting Nuno Mendes' defensive lapse to slot home a clinical finish. PSG, fresh off a Champions League victory, entered as favorites but faltered under Chelsea's relentless pressure. Their semi-final dominance over Real Madrid (4-0) contrasted sharply with this collapse, as they trailed 3-0 by halftime—a deficit they never recovered from. The European champions struggled to adapt, with Joao Neves' red card in stoppage time epitomizing their woes. His hair-pulling offense, reviewed by VAR, compounded a day of frustration. Chelsea, meanwhile, celebrated a third trophy this season, adding the Club World Cup to their Conference League and Premier League fourth-place finish. This inaugural 32-team format offered $125 million in prize money, a windfall that justified Chelsea's grueling schedule. For PSG, the financial reward pales against the sting of missing a historic double, though their Champions League triumph remains their crowning achievement this season. A Spectacle to Remember The final drew 81,118 fans, including Donald Trump, and featured FIFA's first-ever halftime show—a Super Bowl-inspired spectacle. Yet, the football took center stage, with Chelsea's clinical efficiency overshadowing PSG's star-studded lineup. Palmer's brilliance defined the match, while Joao Pedro's opportunistic finish sealed PSG's fate. Despite Neves' near-miss header, the French giants lacked urgency, failing to breach Chelsea's resolute defense. Chelsea's players face a truncated break before next season, but their reward is undeniable. PSG, meanwhile, have a month to regroup before facing Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup—a chance to refocus under Luis Enrique's leadership. In the end, Chelsea's triumph underscores the unpredictability of sport, proving that even giants can stumble when met with relentless determination. Short link : Post Views: 11

Grizzlies announce that Jaren Jackson jr.'s renegotiation and extension is complete
Jaren Jackson Jr.'s signing of a $239.9 million deal that keeps him under contract for the next five seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies finally became official Sunday, one day after the team reached a buyout agreement with guard Cole Anthony to facilitate the move. Jackson is now under contract through 2029-30 after renegotiating the final year of his current deal and getting a raise to $33 million for the coming season. The extension kicks in in 2026-27 starting with a salary of $46.2 million. The sides reached the agreement two weeks ago, but the Grizzlies needed to clear the space required to make the move happen before Jackson could actually sign the contract. He averaged 22.2 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Grizzlies in 74 games this past season and was an All-Star for the second time in his Memphis career. A three-time All-Defensive team pick–and the 2023 NBA defensive player of the year–Jackson has averaged 18.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in 407 career games with Memphis. Jackson had surgery for a turf toe injury earlier this month and will be re-evaluated likely sometime around the start of training camp this fall, though the Grizzlies haven't given any indication how long he will be sidelined to start the season. He suffered the injury in his right foot during offseason basketball activities, the team had said, adding that he is expected to have a full recovery. Locking up Jackson is part of a plan by Memphis to continue building around him and star point guard Ja Morant. Memphis was swept by eventual champion Oklahoma City in the first round of the playoffs in April.
