Amazon shares fall on weak cloud growth while rivals Google, Microsoft thrive: ‘Very disappointing'

New York Post2 days ago
Amazon on Thursday forecast third-quarter sales above market estimates, but failed to live up to lofty expectations for its Amazon Web Services cloud computing unit after rivals handily beat expectations.
Shares fell by more than 3% in after-hours trading after finishing regular trading up 1.7% to $234.11. Both Google-parent Alphabet and Microsoft posted big cloud computing revenue gains this month.
AWS profit margins also contracted. Amazon said they were 32.9% in the second quarter, down from 39.5% in this year's first quarter and 35.5% a year ago. The second-quarter margin results were at their lowest level since the final quarter of 2023.

AWS, the cloud unit, reported a 17.5% increase in revenue to $30.9 billion, edging past expectations of $30.77 billion. By comparison, sales for Microsoft's Azure rose 39% and Google Cloud gained 32%.
After competitors' strong showing, 'AWS is lingering at 17% growth,' said Gil Luria, a D.A. Davidson analyst. 'That is very disappointing, even to the point where if Microsoft's Azure continues to grow at these rates, it may overtake AWS as the largest cloud provider by the end of next year.'
Amazon expects total net sales to be between $174.0 billion and $179.5 billion in the third quarter, compared with analysts' average estimate of $173.08 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. The range for operating income in the current quarter was also light. Amazon forecast between $15.5 billion and $20.5 billion, compared with expectations of $19.45 billion.
Both Microsoft and Alphabet cited massive demand for their cloud computing services to boost their already huge capital spending, but also noted they still faced capacity constraints that limited their ability to meet demand.
AWS represents a small part of Amazon's total revenue, but it is a key driver of profits, typically accounting for about 60% of Amazon's overall operating income.

While Amazon has poured billions of dollars into AI infrastructure, analysts have said the lack of a strong AI model from AWS is causing concerns that the company could be trailing rivals in AI development.
The AWS results are 'alarming,' said Dave Wagner, portfolio manager for Aptus Capital Advisers, which holds Amazon shares. 'Amazon is an operating leverage story and they had to be able to grow, at least relative to costs. And they haven't done it.'
The Seattle-based retailer posted online store sales of $61.5 billion, an 11% gain. Advertising sales, a fast-growing segment for Amazon, were up 23% to $15.7 billion.
Investors have been watching Amazon's e-commerce unit for any signs that tariff-related uncertainty has dashed consumer confidence. US data showed consumer spending rose moderately in June.

President Trump's tariffs have dampened the US retail industry, leaving major retailers and consumer goods companies scrambling to protect their margins or resort to price increases, all while ensuring consumer demand remains intact.
Trump has said the levies will bring manufacturing power and jobs back to the US.
Analysts had said Amazon's focus on low prices, quick delivery and the sheer number of product categories helped cement its position as the No. 1 e-commerce retailer for US consumers, giving it an edge over rivals.
Amazon has said it was pushing suppliers to pull forward inventories to ensure supply and keep prices as low as possible. Still, prices for goods made in China and sold on Amazon.com have been rising faster than overall inflation, Reuters reported last month.
The company has been trimming jobs in its corporate offices, including at its AWS, books, devices and podcasting units. Its efforts were showing results: headcount fell by 14,000 workers from this year's first quarter, bringing the total to 1.46 million.

An Amazon seller doing 7 figures says one strategic addition has doubled her profit

Lisa Harrington started selling clothes on eBay before transitioning to Amazon. Her business selling interior cat doors took off after hiring a PPC coach. She emphasizes investing in coaching and networking for long-term business growth. Lisa Harrington's e-commerce career began in the early 2010s when she started selling clothing, purses, and other items in her closet that she didn't need anymore. She used the eBay profit to launch her first Amazon product — dog harnesses — and sold enough to quit her corporate job in 2016. She eventually created and patented interior cat doors, which have become a top-selling Amazon product and bring in seven figures in annual revenue. Harrington, who's been doing e-commerce for more than a decade, can pinpoint one decision that took her business to the next level: hiring a PPC coach. PPC (pay-per-click) refers to Amazon's advertising platform, where sellers can pay to have their products displayed prominently. Many sellers consider ads an essential aspect of succeeding in the competitive e-commerce space. For years, "I had a very low spend on my advertisement," Harrington told Business Insider. Figuring out how to run Amazon ads wasn't how she wanted to spend her time. "I just didn't have much interest in it. I really wanted to focus on branding and product development, but it has such an enormous impact on your profit and loss statement that you really can't ignore it." The idea to hire a coach came from an industry event. "I remember talking to this woman, and she's like, 'I hire a coach for everything I don't know how to do. It is the fastest way to level up,'" recalled Harrington. She took the advice, found a coach to help her specifically with ads, and, "in the time I've worked with her, my profit has doubled," said Harrington. It took her six months to find the right fit. "Coaches are hard to find. But when you do find one, it levels your business up," she said. Over the last couple of years, her PPC coach has become more of a general business coach. They discuss everything from product development to effective employee management. "She's the only person I can talk to about every aspect of my business. She not only has the expertise but has the background information, so I can spitball with her, solve problems, and come up with great ideas," said Harrington. The full-time entrepreneur and mother of two kids doesn't hesitate to outsource when she can. "I try to get a coach for everything because, thankfully, I've gotten to the point where I can pay people to help me," she said. "That, in some cases, tends to be a cheaper way to learn a skill or a cheaper way to get something done." Harrington is also a member of the elite group of seven-figure Amazon sellers called Million Dollar Sellers. Members must complete an interview and application and pay $7,497 a year to join the group, which grants them access to exclusive events and a robust network of top-tier entrepreneurs. She's adamant that investing in yourself "always pays dividends," she said. "The knowledge that you gain, the networks that you gain, the experience shares that you hear, the tips and tricks that you get access to — not only is that short-term helping your business and helping your profit and loss statement, but you're also learning all of those things, so that if everything fell apart tomorrow, you could rebuild it again." WNBA possibly headed to Boson with Sun sale: Everything we know so far

The WNBA may be headed to Boston sooner than expected. A deal has been reached between a group led by Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca and the Mohegan Tribe to buy the Connecticut Sun and move the team to TD Garden by 2027, per the Boston Globe. The purchase would be for $325 million, a record for a women's professional sports franchise, per the Globe. A $100 million practice facility in Boston is reportedly in the works if the deal goes through. "The Boston group is targeting a 2027 move and would potentially play early season games in Providence to avoid any conflict with Bruins and Celtics playoff games," the Globe's Gary Washburn reported. The Sun has played games at TD Garden in the past, including one against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever in July. The possible sale would give one of America's biggest cities a WNBA franchise sooner than expansion sites like Philadelphia, Cleveland and Detroit. However, the sale is pending WNBA approval, and that could get tricky per a key detail in the Globe's report. What could hold up the Boston sale? According to Washburn, the WNBA could eye Boston as a possible expansion site in 2033. That might complicate the sale, but it's also possible the league and its governors go ahead and approve this transaction. The Celtics are reportedly agreeable to the Sun moving into TD Garden, per Washburn. Will the team stay the Sun if the sale is approved? That detail is not yet known, as a potential rebranding is always possible. However, the Boston Sun has a nice ring to it. Could the WNBA force the Sun to stay in Connecticut? It's apparently possible, per Washburn. "A WNBA source said if the league forces the Mohegan Tribe to sell to a Connecticut-based buyer to [keep] the team in the state, which it has the power to do, Mohegan will cooperate, but the Tribe's choice is to sell to the Boston-based group," he wrote. "That source said the Tribe has determined selling the franchise would be the most financially lucrative, and it could then concentrate on running its casino and hotel." What are the problems with the Sun staying where they are? Well, Washburn outlined some of the biggest challenges the Sun faces by staying where the team is. "Mohegan Sun Arena is the league's fourth-smallest venue and the Sun lack a dedicated practice facility, instead conducting workouts at the gym inside the Tribe's community and government center," he wrote. "Often, the Sun are forced to share space with summer camps and other local events." That can lead to a lack of interest for WNBA free agents and dissatisfaction with rostered players. Where will the Sun play in 2026? The team will remain in Connecticut at Mohegan Sun Arena, no matter what happens with this possible sale.
