Adani Energy to raise $502 million through stake sale
Published 1 Jun 2025, 08:51 AM IST
(Bloomberg) -- Billionaire Gautam Adani-controlled Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. approved raising 43 billion rupees ($502 million) via a stake sale.
The Adani Group unit's board approved a proposal to raise the amount via 'Qualified Institutional Placement' in one or more tranches, according to an exchange filing Saturday.
Adani companies, with interests stretching from ports to green energy, are steadily regaining investor confidence after a US indictment of the founder soured sentiment. The group in April raised about $750 million for an acquisition, with BlackRock Inc. subscribing to about a third of the bond issue. Last week, its ports unit raised $150 million from DBS Group Holdings Ltd. in a bilateral loan.
In March, Fitch Ratings removed Adani Energy from a rating watch and assigned it a negative outlook, citing moderating risks associated with the group's liquidity. 'The Adani group has demonstrated adequate funding access' since the US bribery charges, Fitch said in a statement.

Google ordered to pay over $314 million to Android users in California for ‘stealing' mobile data
Google has been ordered to pay over $314.6 million to Android smartphone users in California after a state court in San Jose ruled in favour of the plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit. The jury agreed with claims that Google was liable for sending and receiving information from Android devices without users' permission while the devices were idle. According to the lawsuit, this amounted to 'mandatory and unavoidable burdens shouldered by Android device users for Google's benefit.' The suit further claimed that Google programmed Android phones to transfer data to its servers when users were not connected to a Wi-Fi network, effectively using data that customers were paying for. The tech giant allegedly used this information 'to further its own corporate interests,' including building more targeted digital advertising and expanding its mapping credibility, the lawsuit states. The class-action lawsuit was filed in 2019 in Santa Clara Superior Court on behalf of California residents. A parallel federal case is pending for Android users across the United States, with a trial scheduled to begin in early 2026, Bloomberg reported. 'This ruling is a setback for users, as it misunderstands services that are critical to the security, performance, and reliability of Android devices,' Google's José Castañeda was quoted by Bloomberg as saying. Castañeda further noted that the transfers discussed in the case are necessary to maintain the performance of billions of Android devices worldwide and that they consume less cellular data than sending a single photo. He stated that Android users consent to such transfers through multiple terms of use agreements and device setting options. Notably, this case is only one of several legal challenges facing the search giant in its home country. Last year, a federal judge ruled in favour of the United States government in its anti-monopoly case against Google. The Department of Justice has argued that Google's monopoly can be ended by breaking up its different products, including Chrome browser, Search and Android.

Rupee slips as Trump sticks to tariff deadline; opens lower at 85.59/$
The Indian Rupee slipped on Tuesday as the currency saw renewed pressure from US President Donald Trump's looming tariff deadline. The domestic currency opened 6 paise lower at 85.59 against the dollar, according to Bloomberg. Most Asian currencies declined on Wednesday amid Trump's comments on extending the tariff deadline. The unit has depreciated by around 0.21 per cent in June and has fallen by 0.18 per cent in the first six months of the calendar year. Trump said he is not considering delaying his July 9 deadline for higher tariffs to resume. He also added the US and India will soon finalise a trade deal with 'much lower tariffs,' which would enable fairer competition between the two countries. The Indian rupee remained volatile on Tuesday, as markets await the conclusion of the India-US trade deal, which is in its final stages, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. "Buying interest emerged below 85.50, with nationalised banks seen actively purchasing dollars. Meanwhile, upticks in the dollar were sold off, amid a decline in the dollar index." With no clear directional cues, the rupee is expected to remain range-bound between 85.35 and 85.95, Bhansali said. The RBI's outstanding net short dollar position in the forward market fell further to $45 billion by the end of May, against $52 billion at the end of April, according to the central bank's latest data. Market participants will closely watch key US data this week, including non-farm payrolls, unemployment rate, and ADP employment data, which could influence dollar direction, analysts said. US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's comment that the central bank would have already cut interest rates if it weren't for Trump's tariff initiatives will also be eyed. Meanwhile, the dollar index extended its fall as Trump escalated trade tensions. The measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.14 per cent at 96.68. The index has fallen 10.93 per cent so far this year.

Jeff Bezos offloads stock: Sells 3.3 million Amazon shares; nets $736.7 million amid wedding fanfare
File photo: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (Picture credit: AP) Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has offloaded over 3.3 million shares of the tech giant, netting approximately $736.7 million, as per a regulatory filing reported by Bloomberg. The transactions, carried out in late June, coincided with Bezos' lavish three-day wedding to Lauren Sanchez in Venice, a celebration that drew global attention and protests from some locals. The share sale is part of a pre-scheduled 10b5-1 trading plan Bezos adopted in March, allowing him to sell up to 25 million Amazon shares through May 2026. According to CNBC, Bezos implemented a similar plan in early 2024 to sell up to 50 million shares by January this year. Following the latest transaction, Bezos still holds around 905 million Amazon shares, maintaining his status as the company's largest individual shareholder. Since 2002, Bezos has sold about $44 billion worth of Amazon stock, noted Bloomberg, while making only one recorded purchase, a single share in 2022. The billionaire, who stepped down as Amazon CEO in 2021 but remains executive chair, is known to use stock proceeds to fund his ventures, most notably Blue Origin. The aerospace company recently launched its flagship rocket into orbit, though it announced significant layoffs soon after. Bezos has also donated generously. In 2025, he gifted nearly 930,000 Amazon shares to undisclosed nonprofits. According to Bloomberg, he reported donations worth $60 million in March, followed by gifts of $125 million in May and $5 million in June. Most of these contributions support the Bezos Earth Fund, a $10 billion climate initiative and the Bezos Day One Fund, which tackles homelessness and supports early education. The timing of the stock sale with his wedding was widely noted. As per CNBC, the Venice ceremony cost an estimated $50 million. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bezos is the world's third-richest individual with a net worth of approximately $241.4 billion. Forbes ranks him fourth with an estimate of $234.4 billion. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students.
