Guest faculty teachers face uncertainty amid new appointments in state
Services of many of these teachers, who have been teaching for six to eight years, have not been renewed citing lack of vacancies, sparking widespread frustration and resentment among qualified youth.
In protest, several affected guest faculty members at Patna University (PU) recently launched a hunger strike, demanding the renewal of their services against existing vacancies. The strike was called off only after PU authorities agreed to extend the contracts of some faculty members in select subjects.
However, many others remain unaccommodated due to the lack of vacancies in their respective disciplines, according to PU sources.
A guest lecturer from the physics department of Patna Science College expressed concern over the situation. He noted that all guest faculty members meet the University Grants Commission (UGC) eligibility criteria for assistant professors and have been teaching against substantive posts.

Despite their dedication, their employment remains insecure, subject to abrupt termination at the discretion of university authorities.
Currently, guest faculty members across Bihar's universities are paid an honorarium of Rs1,500 per class, capped at Rs 50,000 per month. This payment is made for only 11 months each year, with a mandatory one-month break before renewal—resulting in the loss of one month's pay.
Additionally, they receive no compensation during summer vacations, further exacerbating their financial instability.
A few months ago, the Bihar Legislative Council's education committee, led by MLC Ram Bachan Roy, recommended that guest faculty members—whose qualifications match those of regular teachers, who were appointed following the reservation roster, and who have served for five to six years—should be allowed to continue teaching until the age of 65, similar to regular faculty.
Echoing this sentiment, Kanhaiya Bahadur Sinha, working president of the federation of university teachers' associations of Bihar (FUTAB), and general secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, MLC, have urged the chancellor and the state govt to regularise the services of these long-serving guest faculty members.

NEW DELHI: RSS will not extend invitations to the embassies of Pakistan, Turkiye and Bangladesh for its 100th anniversary celebrations, even as it is reaching out to other diplomatic missions it's been in touch with. According to RSS prachar pramukh Sunil Ambekar, the invitation list spans around 17 main categories and 138 sub-categories, including social, economic, religious, spiritual, sports, arts, media and intellectual leaders. "Our aim is that the entire country should move forward together on its development journey. We want a dialogue with all sections of society," he said. Ambekar added that while outreach to some foreign missions was under way, certain countries would be excluded. "We are in contact with many embassies but given the current context, Pakistan will not be invited," he said. According to RSS sources, countries like Bangladesh and Turkiye are not going to be invited. CM to officials: Include views of public reps in action plans
Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted a detailed review of development works for the Agra division in Agra on Tuesday. He announced that there was no shortage of funds for projects but emphasised the need for proper utilisation of the budget. Interacting with officials and public representatives from Agra, Mathura, Firozabad, and Mainpuri, the CM directed officials to coordinate with public representatives over the finalisation of proposals. He warned against delays in approvals, adding that unspent funds undermined govt's intent. Calling the meeting "a mission to ensure development schemes translate into real outcomes" and not just a routine inspection, the CM also stressed the need to bridge the gap between planning and execution of projects by incorporating ground-level feedback from elected representatives into planning. In his interaction with public representatives, Yogi discussed their challenges, asked about public expectations and development priorities of their respective constituencies. He directed officials to ensure that all their suggestions were incorporated into action plans. During a review of the public works department, the CM issued various directions, asking officials to ensure that proposals for roads, bridges, flyovers, bypasses, and inter-state connectivity submitted by MLAs were incorporated into the work plan. He also called for a large-scale pothole-free road campaign to be launched immediately after the monsoon. The CM reminded officials that roads built by contractors are covered under a guarantee period, and any damage during this time must be repaired by the same contractor. He warned of strict action in cases of negligence and directed departments to prepare fresh proposals for constructing small and large bridges over rivers. Tourism department officials informed the CM that 160 projects worth Rs 590 crore were underway in the division. The CM directed them to ensure that roads leading to major urban and rural temples are developed based on the number of devotees using the roads. In his review of the urban development department, the CM's major focus was on waterlogging. He asked local bodies to come up with effective drainage plans. The Agra police commissioner also gave a presentation on action taken under 'Mission Asmita', focused on tackling illegal religious conversions and crime.
