Ubisoft backflips, says Assassin's Creed Shadows will support Steam Deck at launch, but I doubt I'll actually want to play it there
Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin's Creed Shadows will run on Steam Deck at launch, which is great albeit unexpected news. It's unexpected, because last month Ubisoft ruled out Steam Deck support, pointing out—quite reasonably—that Valve's handheld is "below our minimum specs for PC".
So what's changed? Presumably the studio has done some testing, tweaked some knobs, and discovered that the game does actually run. "We are happy to say that we are supporting Steam Deck at launch and are currently awaiting the level of classification from Valve," the official Assassin's Creed X account wrote. "More info to come soon."
Steam Deck OLED released in November 2023 and is holding up astonishingly well. It runs Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and a bunch of other recent blockbusters I certainly didn't expect it would run. That's impressive work for a handheld device, and equally impressive work from the developers who manage to make their games work on it.
But will Assassin's Creed Shadows be fun to play on Steam Deck? I am doubtful. Those aforementioned heavyhitters are both "Verified" Steam Deck games, but they're clearly made for larger screens and beefier rigs. It's cool that they run, but it's pretty hard to enjoy them when they look closer to moving Claude Monet paintings than modern videogames. They're smeared, jerky, and overall suboptimal. Maybe I'm being picky, but I usually find I'm less picky than other PC gamers.
Still, if Steam Deck is your only gaming device—and I feel like that's a growing category of player—Assassin's Creed Shadows is on the menu. It's great to see studios actually addressing the still-small but growing handheld market directly, too. Will Assassin's Creed Shadows factor into our list of the best Steam Deck games? Time will tell, but if you ask me, the device is perfect for most indies, CRPGs (those track pads), and Vampire Survivors.

Elgato's new 4k60 Facecam might just become our new favourite, featuring a new a lens, sensor, and analogue filters

When it comes to streaming and conferencing gear, Elgato is a company I've come to really appreciate. They make some of my favourite streaming gear like great keylights, and are also behind some of the best webcams around. The brand's Facecam line has impressed us since its inception back in 2021 with Elgato's first ever webcam and continues today with the Facecam MK.2 sitting atop our list of beloved cameras. Now, we are treated to the latest in that lineup as Elgato releases the Facecam 4k, and I'm only going off specs here, but it sounds like a really great webcam. Right out the gate the Elgato Facecam 4k presents some impressive details to drool over. We see the same Elgato Prime lens which impressed us on the MK.2 paired with an improved 1/1.8" Sony Starvis 2 CMOS sensor. These guarantee that the image the camera is able to capture with its own optics is going to be very solid, and makes for a great foundation for the rest of the performance for this webcam. These aren't the only interesting pieces of hardware featured, as Elgato has gone surprisingly analogue here. The Facecam 4k sports manual shutter-speed and ISO settings so you can dial in the light intake and speed to help make the best of your image. If you've not got the best lighting this should be a huge help in getting the best balance without things getting too grainy. There's also physical lens filters. You know, those bits of coloured plastic you put infront of a lens to get different effects? Some of the younger crew may not be familiar with these, as usually filters are digital here in 2025, but they definitely exist. And now they can exist on your camera, which I think more creative streamers and content creators will have a lot of fun playing with. It will fit any 49-mm filter you can find, and Elgato are currently throwing some in for those who order from the webstore. The 4k in this Facecams name isn't just for show. These can record HDR video up to 4k at 30 fps. You can also grab uncompressed video up to 4k 30 as well, as long as you've got the bandwidth in your USB. You can also drop the resolution down to 1080 if you're after higher framerates and generally dial this in to whatever suits your setup the best. Through Elgato's Camera Hub software you can further dial a bunch of this stuff in and play with other effects. This includes full pan and tilt controls, digital presets, and if you're packing an Nvidia RTX card you can potentially access extra features like background blur. If Elgato's Facecam 4k turns out to be as it says on the tin, I think we could have a contender for a new top webcam on our hands. It's launching at $200 USD, which also doesn't feel unreasonable for what actually looks like a really decent upgrade from the 1080p60 Facecam which still retails for $140. $60 for better sensors, upgraded lens, 4k capabilities, and all those sweet weird lens features sounds very worthwhile and I think this will become a staple for many streamers in the near future.

Is Battlefield 6 cross-platform?
Every online multiplayer shooter these days needs to have cross-platform support to stand a chance, but Battlefield 6 might as well be dead on arrival without this functionality. This is because, unlike games like Borderlands 4 or Gears of War: Reloaded, multiplayer matches in Battlefield 6 will feature 64-player warzones. That's a huge lobby to fill if the game is only matching you with other players on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC. Before you pick your class and prepare to experience the destructive multiplayer waiting in Battlefield 6, I'll give you the sitrep on its cross-platform support. Is Battlefield 6 cross-platform? First reported by Eurogamer, it is confirmed that Battlefield 6 will feature full crossplay support on all platforms. Unlike the last entry, Battlefield 2042, this game will not be available on last-gen systems. That means crossplay will let you squad up with friends across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. For those who wish to only play with others on their specific platform, the option to disable crossplay will be available. Sadly, it was also confirmed that Battlefield 6 won't be coming to the Switch 2. Recommended Videos As far as why Battlefield 6 will be skipping the Switch 2, Vince Zampella stated that the core Battlefield fanbase is on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Battlefield 6 will also have full cross-progression support. This means players will be able to take all their progress, including skins, ranks, guns, levels, and more, from one platform to another. You will still need to purchase the game on additional platforms, but at least you won't have to start the grind over if you do want to play on two platforms. With nine maps at launch and a return to the classic class-based structure, cross-platform support was the last missing piece Battlefield 6 needed to set itself up for success when it launches on October 10, but you can get a taste of the action early by playing the beta test in August if it isn't too late.
