Yankees could be outbid by Brewers for star slugger at trade deadline
The New York Yankees have a hole at third base and could use the trade deadline to fill it. However, the Milwaukee Brewers could outbid them for the perfect option. After releasing DJ LeMahieu and moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base, the Yankees' options at third base are Oswald Peraza, Jorbit Vivas and J.C. Escarra. None are great options offensively, and the Yankees could target Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Advertisement Suárez signed a seven-year, $66 million deal in 2018. He is playing on a $15 million club option and will be a free agent after the season. The Diamondbacks could turn into surefire sellers over the next few weeks, and Suárez could become one of the hottest names on the market. He was named an All-Star this season and is slashing .246/.313/.550 with 29 home runs. He also has 75 RBIs. He would be a boost to any offense, but especially one lacking any sort of production from third base. While the Yankees need a third baseman, they are not the only team that could be looking for one. Former Yankees prospect Caleb Durbin has quietly been playing great for the Brewers. He has a .261/.347/.365 slash line, but has been one of the team's hottest hitters since the start of June. However, the Brewers could try to shuffle their infield to get Joey Ortiz out of the lineup in favor of an upgrade like Suárez. The Los Angeles Dodgers have reason for a bit of disappointment, even after reaching the All-Star break with the most wins in the National League. The team has been unable to stave off an epidemic of pitcher injuries for the second year in a row, with more than a dozen different arms hitting the injured list in the first half. And with offseason additions like Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki unable to stay healthy, some disappointment is understandable. But the Dodgers have to be pleased with franchise icon Clayton Kershaw, who has returned from the injured list to make 10 starts so far this year with an effective 3.38 ERA at age 37. However, it could be Kershaw's final season with the team. Kershaw signed a single-year deal with the Dodgers ahead of this season and he recently told The Orange County Register's Bill Plunkett that he'll be making a retirement decision after this season.
