Randa Shaath Launches "Al-Qāhirah 90" Exhibition Within the Proceedings of Cairo Photo Week

Egypt Today07-05-2025

For the first time, Palestinian-Egyptian photographer Randa Shaath launches an independent exhibition within the proceedings of the fourth Cairo Photo Week (CPW) under the slogan "Finding the View", organized by Photopia. It is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and Tourism Promotion Authority, Ministry of Cultural between (8-18) May.
"Al-Qāhirah 90" exhibition is to be held in Beit Babelouk at Sheikh Reyhan street at Downtown and showcases 20 photographs documenting different aspects of life in Cairo during the nineties in order to highlight defining moments in the capital, Cairo, before the great urban expansion since the beginning of the millennium.
Shaath worked as a photographer for Agence France-Presse in Egypt and Gaza during the nineties, as well as Al-Ahram newspaper. Additionally, she was the first to hold the position of photo editor-in-chief at Al-Shorouk newspaper. Shaath noted that selecting "Al-Qāhirah 90" as the key theme of her exhibition is linked to her connection to the nineties which highlights the peak of her career in journalism. At that time, she witnessed multiple changes in the Egyptian capital and captured them through her lens, like the excavation of the subway and the construction of the second phase of October Bridge. Her work documents life in places no longer exist, such as the area located behind the ancient El-Oyoun stream wall -including "Al Jaiarah", sugar, lemon, and gypsy monsters- and the Maspero area which has changed now.
Shaath added, "The photos I selected for the exhibition don't highlight nostalgia for the nineties, for each era has its merits and demerits. As for Cairo Photo Week, I wanted to highlight different themes about Cairo and document the place where I live, particularly during that period. People are the same. Changes occur in places, clothing, professions, and everyday life details. This is what I was keen to capture, document and display in the exhibition".
Photopia's founder and executive director, Marwa Abu Leila, stated, "The participation of artist Randa Shaath in 'Al-Qāhirah 90' exhibition is a significant addition to Cairo Photo Week. Shaath has previously participated in symposiums and workshops. Her exhibition will grant audiences the opportunity to get to know her photographic vision that combines artistic and human documentation".
Shaath is a Palestinian-Egyptian photographer. She holds a BA in Middle Eastern Studies from the AUC and a MA in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Minnesota in the USA. She took part in multiple international exhibitions and institutions and published four books, such as "My Homeland is but a Stone's Throw Away" (1989), which presents daily life in the Canada Palestinian refugee camp in Rafah. She also published "Egypt, the Mother of the World" (1990), which explores the history and culture of Cairo over 1300 years, and "Under the Same Sky" (2003), which documents scenes from life in Cairo. In 2020, she published her autobiography; "Sand Mountain", through which she tackled her personal and professional journey and experiences in photography and identity.
It is noteworthy that the fourth Cairo Photo Week includes over 20 individual and collective exhibitions for professional local and international photographers. They also include international institutions, such as World Press Photo, Vogue, National Geographic, and Getty Images, in 14 locations in Downtown. Furthermore, Cairo Photo Week is to host over 100 discussion sessions, workshops, and live demos, with the participation of international experts and artists, in collaboration with multiple embassies, such as the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Denmark, along with the British Council and the European Union.

Egyptian & Italian Artists Bridge Cultures in 'Tale of Two Cities'

Held between Italy and Egypt, 'Tale of Two Cities' unites 13 artists across disciplines to explore geography, poetry, and memory through contemporary art, design, and visual storytelling. Jun 29, 2025 From Milan to Alexandria, 'Tale of Two Cities' returns for a second edition with a lineup of 13 Egyptian and Italian artists and designers. Organised by Art D'Égypte by CulturVator, the exhibition spans two major venues—MA*GA Museum and Fumagalli Gallery in Italy—before heading to Alexandria later this year. With a focus on memory, geography, and artistic legacy, the exhibit weaves together the poetic and the contemporary through painting, photography, sculpture, and design, building on last year's 'Tale of Two Cities' exhibit between Alexandria and Athens, Greece. Here's a look at the artists shaping this East-West dialogue... Ahmed Farid (Egypt) A self-taught abstract painter whose work explores the chaos and vibrancy of urban life. Drawing on a background in marketing and social science, Farid's canvases are layered meditations on identity, conflict, and city life, positioning him as one of Egypt's most acclaimed contemporary abstractionists. Jamal Bassiouni (Egypt) Known for his multimedia works exploring Egyptian beliefs and colour theory, Bassiouni moves seamlessly between painting, sculpture, and installation. His practice often engages ancient symbolism through modern materials. Hassan Ragab (Egypt) An architect and generative artist whose studio practice fuses computational design, furniture, and visual art. Ragab's work engages technology, identity, and form, challenging visual expectations. Luca Boffi / Alberonero (Italy) An artist and farmer, Boffi creates large-scale public works rooted in visual perception, landscape, and ecology. His interdisciplinary practice blends art with community and environmental activism. Giacomo Cossio (Italy) A painter whose bold works reflect on the apocalyptic conditions of the present. Cossio's visual universe is built on symbolic gestures and charged landscapes, often invoking the human impulse to control nature. Clarulecis (Italy) A collective founded by Chiara Lecca, working between Romagna and Sardinia. Their creations combine natural elements with performance, sculpture, and design to revive a primal human-nature relationship. Luigi Pensa (Italy) Trained at Central Saint Martins, Pensa's design work spans furniture, ceramics, and fashion. His pieces reflect a fusion of digital and handmade processes, often layering cultural and religious iconography. Kahhal 1871 (Egypt) Kahhal 1871 is one of Egypt's oldest rug ateliers, now helmed by Mohamed El Kahhal, whose contemporary vision preserves traditional craft while reimagining handmade carpets for luxury interiors. Ahmad El Sherif / Cotta Design (Egypt) Founder of Cotta Design, El Sherif creates interiors that balance heritage and modernity. His projects, spanning Egypt and Saudi Arabia, fuse functionality with aesthetic storytelling. Gamal Meleka (Egypt) A Cairo-born artist whose early success in Italy helped shape a career grounded in scenography, painting, and cultural symbolism. His work bridges academic technique with emotive expression. Karim El Hayawan (Egypt) An interior architect and street photographer whose visual language captures Cairo's layered architecture and human character. His lens frames the city as a living organism. Marina Ballo Charmet (Italy) A major figure in Italian photography, Charmet's perceptual style explores the 'always seen'—the overlooked rhythms of daily life—often shot from a childlike or peripheral point of view. Stefano Cagol (Italy) Working across land art, video, and conceptual practice, Cagol investigates environmental and geopolitical themes. His work often explores borders, energy, and the tension between nature and culture.

El-Sisi directs involving private sector in Hurghada Airport development by year-end - Urban & Transport

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi directed on Saturday that Hurghada International Airport be offered for private sector partnership by the end of 2025, signaling a push for modern development methods across the nation's aviation infrastructure. The president's directive came during a meeting in Alamein City with Civil Aviation Minister Sameh ElHefny and EgyptAir In-Flight Services Chairperson Soheir Abdullah, according to a presidential statement. The move is part of a broader strategy to involve international partnerships and private investment in developing Egyptian airports for efficiency and sustainability. This aligns with Egypt's Vision 2030, which aims to transform airports into advanced regional hubs that operate with the latest global operational systems and an attractive investment environment. During a recent interview with Ahram Online, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which serves as the technical advisor for this initiative, emphasized the importance of launching tenders for the first of 11 airports, including Hurghada, by the end of 2025. IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop noted that this portfolio approach is designed to attract investment, mitigate transactional risks, and showcase Egypt's broader monetization strategy as both viable and scalable. Cairo Int'l Airport A core component of this strategy is the New Republic Air Gateway project at Cairo International Airport's Terminal 4. During the meeting, Minister ElHefny presented technical specifications for this new passenger terminal, designed to handle at least 30 million passengers. This expansion is expected to effectively double Cairo Airport's total annual capacity to over 60 million passengers, while maintaining stringent safety, security, and environmental standards. According to Diop, Cairo and the other targeted airports are critical gateways for Egypt's tourism, trade, and regional connectivity. He highlighted that modernizing infrastructure — from terminals to baggage systems — alongside expanding passenger capacity and implementing advanced technologies, such as automated check-ins, will directly support Egypt's economic recovery and global competitiveness. The civil aviation sector's comprehensive plan, reviewed during the meeting, includes significant upgrades to airport infrastructure, development of the aircraft fleet, enhancement of air navigation, and improvements in human resource capabilities. These efforts are geared towards boosting Egypt's tourism sector, with a national goal of attracting 30 million visitors annually. In the first quarter of 2025, arrivals reached 3.9 million, representing a 25 percent year-over-year increase. In 2024, 15.7 million tourists visited Egypt, an unprecedented number in the history of Egyptian tourism, marking a 6 percent increase over 2023. Private sector integration, int'l recognition ElHefny also detailed a national strategy, developed in collaboration with the IFC, to integrate the private sector into airport operations and development. This strategy, expected to be finalized by the end of summer 2025, seeks to enhance performance, improve operational efficiency, and elevate traveler service quality. Additionally, it aims to attract private investment and advanced operational expertise for 11 major airports, with the critical caveat that ownership of these vital assets will remain in public hands. "These airports are strategically located to serve both tourism hotspots like Luxor, Aswan, and Sharm El-Sheikh, as well as commercial hubs," Diop told Ahram Online. He explained that IFC will provide not only financing, but also technical and regulatory support to create a more investment-friendly climate and encourage global airport operators to engage through public-private partnerships. Airspace and traffic management Egyptian air traffic controllers have received international commendation for their efficient management of increased air traffic amid recent regional crises. Despite airspace closures in neighboring countries, Daily flights over Egyptian airspace surged to more than 1,600. International organizations, including Eurocontrol, ICAO, and IATA, have also praised their high performance, noting that safety and operational discipline were maintained. The meeting also discussed plans to restructure Egyptian airspace and upgrade radar and communication technologies. EgyptAir's significant achievements The meeting also highlighted EgyptAir's significant recent achievements. For the first time, the airline received the Best Airline Staff in Africa award for 2025 from global rating agency Skytrax at the Paris Air Show. EgyptAir also secured the awards for Best Cabin Crew in Africa and Best Economy Class Meals. Moreover, it was named Most Improved Airline in Africa for the second consecutive year. The minister also noted that EgyptAir has climbed 20 places to rank 68th globally among over 325 carriers. Discussions also covered EgyptAir's fleet renewal plan, which aims to reach 97 aircraft by 2028/2029, boosting its competitiveness and enhancing the travel experience. The meeting also reviewed efforts to upgrade EgyptAir's In-Flight Services, including infrastructure, equipment, staff training, ground services, and business class lounges, to ensure the highest comfort and service standards.
