Zawya23-06-2025
Doha, Qatar – Artemis Education and Queen's Qatar announce the opening of their new Sports Centre – a cutting-edge facility that sets a new benchmark for student wellbeing, community fitness, and holistic education in Qatar.
This milestone reflects Queen's Qatar's unwavering commitment to nurturing the whole child and providing an environment where every learner can thrive. As part of the Artemis Experience, the Sports Centre is designed to inspire talent, foster healthy lifestyles, and empower students to 'Discover Their Greatness.'
Opening in phases from April 2025 and fully completed by September, the facility will offer a fully equipped fitness gym featuring the latest modern equipment and professional training support. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the gym will be open to students, parents, and members of the wider community.
The expansive outdoor grounds boast two football pitches, a dedicated running track, and a padel court—all designed to support competitive sports and recreational activity. Additionally, two multi-sport courts provide versatile spaces for various athletic disciplines, encouraging participation, teamwork, and healthy competition.
At the heart of the centre is a 25-metre, eight-lane competition-standard swimming pool, alongside a smaller learner pool that ensures younger children can gain confidence in the water in a safe and supportive environment. An impressive indoor show court with a spectator viewing gallery offers a professional setting for hosting school events and competitive matches.
The large multi-sports hall can be adapted for various purposes, from tournaments and training sessions to assemblies and community events. Specialist indoor studios will host yoga, spinning, dance, and creative movement classes, while private wellness rooms will be available for individual consultation and support.
In keeping with the school's family-oriented ethos, the centre includes a coffee shop for social connection and a toddler playroom, ensuring that the facility remains welcoming and accessible to all age groups.
Several Sports Centre facilities will also be available for private hire, positioning Queen's Qatar as a vibrant hub for sport, wellbeing, and community engagement in Doha.
More than just a building, the Queen's Sports Centre represents an investment in the future — a place where young people will discover resilience through competition, confidence through movement, and connection through shared experiences. It will be a space where students unlock their potential, families come together, and community spirit thrives.
As Queen's Qatar continues to grow, this advanced facility will play a pivotal role in shaping well-rounded individuals who are academically accomplished, physically confident, emotionally balanced, and ready to lead with purpose.
Niall Brennan, CEO of Artemis Education, commented, 'The Sports Centre is a significant part of our vision to inspire students to become responsible global citizens. It reflects our commitment to sustainability, social responsibility, and community impact.'
Ann Djedid, Principal of Queen's International School Qatar, commented, 'The Sports Centre reflects our whole child philosophy, providing a space that promotes physical fitness while supporting personal development. It plays a key role in strengthening curriculum delivery, offering dynamic, real-life learning contexts across subjects such as PE, health, and wellbeing. We are proud to offer a facility that benefits both our students and the wider community.'
Andy Coomer, Director of Experience at Artemis Education, added, 'The Sports Centre embodies our core values of strength, resilience, and innovation. It is a space where everyone can engage in sports, build experiences, and create lasting memories. Hamdan bin Mohammed launches ‘Dubai Mallathon' to transform shopping malls into fitness hubs

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, today launched Dubai Mallathon, a community-driven initiative aimed at promoting public health by encouraging all members of society to engage in daily physical activity during the summer. The initiative is set to transform shopping malls across Dubai into organised health and fitness tracks during morning hours, from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m., from 1 to 31 August. As part of the initiative, dedicated walking and running tracks will be introduced in seven of Dubai's major shopping destinations, including Dubai Mall, Dubai Hills Mall, Springs Souk, City Centre Deira, City Centre Mirdif, Mall of the Emirates, and Dubai Marina Mall. Dubai Mallathon is aligned with the goals of the Year of Community, the Dubai Social Agenda 33, and Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 33, which aim to provide the highest standards of living, residential services, and cultural and sporting events while celebrating the UAE's cultural, architectural and environmental heritage. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan said Dubai seeks to set new global benchmarks in wellbeing by making fitness an integral part of daily life. Through meaningful initiatives that bring the community together, the city aims to foster a sense of connection, encourage healthier lifestyles, and create a more vibrant, supportive social life, he added. 'With the Dubai Mallathon, we're turning familiar spaces into places that inspire movement, connection, and better habits. 'We want everyone in Dubai to feel they can stay active and energised in welcoming spaces built with their needs in mind. This reflects our broader commitment to placing people and families at the heart of our development plans.' He encouraged the public to take part in the Dubai Mallathon, describing it as a simple and accessible way to embrace healthier habits and engage with the community. 'Every step you take moves us closer towards a healthier Dubai,' he said. 'This is a shared journey. We are all partners in transforming our city into the world's best place to live, work, and visit.' Sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and held in collaboration with the Dubai Sports Council, the Dubai Mallathon initiative targets all segments of society, including youth, senior citizens, residents, children, and shopping mall employees. Designed to foster an active lifestyle in a supportive setting, the initiative incorporates motivational tools such as fitness-tracking systems, health awareness stations, dedicated children's areas, and guided stretching exercises. This community-driven experience not only encourages participation but also raises awareness about the importance of a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Dubai Mallathon also seeks to make the most of the vast, underutilised indoor spaces in major malls by transforming them into safe and dynamic sporting environments. This approach offers a practical solution to the challenges of summer heat. With air-conditioned spaces and advanced infrastructure, shopping malls provide an ideal setting for exercise, removing the barrier of extreme heat and encouraging residents to maintain their physical fitness year-round. The initiative also features the 'Walk for Better Health' programme, organised by Dubai's Community Development Authority in collaboration with malls in the emirate. Participation in Dubai Mallathon is free of charge and can be completed by registering through the official website: Upon registration, participants will receive a digital card confirming their enrolment in the initiative. Dubai Mallathon also features collaborations with restaurants and retail outlets, which will offer special deals that align with the initiative's goals of promoting a balanced and active lifestyle, encouraging better nutritional choices and supporting individuals in adopting long-term, sustainable healthy habits.

What to expect at Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi: Dates, competitions and who can participate

Abu Dhabi will host the Open Masters Games, one of the world's biggest multisport events of its kind, from February 6 to 16. More than 25,000 participants, aged 30 years and above, are expected to take part and will compete across 33 games to be held at various venues across the emirate. The event is an offshoot of the World Masters Games, which is held every four years, and is popular with retired professional athletes. Open Masters Games, however, is an event open to all, from seasoned athletes to former competitors. The Masters Games were founded in 1985 and organised by the International Masters Games Association, a body officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee. What is Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi? An international sporting series, Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi will mark the first time the event is being hosted in the Middle East. A celebration of sport, camaraderie and competition – particularly among the older generation – the event is open to all participants from around the world. Competitors need to be aged 30 or above, save for swimming and endurance horse racing (25+) and rugby (27+). Participants will compete in 29 official sports and four traditional sports including falconry, camel racing, endurance horse racing and dhow sailing. Unlike other international sporting events, participants compete for themselves and there are no country delegations. Who can participate? The Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi is open to all, from seasoned athletes to first-timers, as long as they meet the age requirement. Of the 33 games, 18 will be open to para athletes and people of determination. How much does it cost to take part? Registration costs $75 (Dh275) for UAE residents and $150 (Dh550) for international participants. All participants will get 90 per cent of the registration fee back upon check-in at the Athlete Welcome Centre, which they can use against meals, hotels and select experiences. Registration for participants closes on December 31 or until capacity is reached. All the venues will be free to enter for spectators. Calling all volunteers Organisers have kicked off volunteer sign-ups to give those interested a chance to be part of one of the biggest sporting events in the country. A total of 20,000 volunteers will be hired, spanning everything from sports management to medical services and catering. The opportunity is open to all, from students to professionals to sports enthusiasts. 'Volunteering in the Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026 is more than just a contribution of time – it is a message of passion and belonging,' said Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, chief executive at Emirates Foundation, which is spearheading the volunteer programme. 'The unity of volunteers embodies the spirit of collaboration to work together towards a shared goal: promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging movement and healthy ageing among all members of the community, and across all age groups.'
