Stephen Bunting battles past Gary Anderson in World Matchplay thriller

Stephen Bunting battles past Gary Anderson in World Matchplay thriller

It took a while for both players to shift into a gear as doubles proved troublesome for the pair throughout the match, which went beyond the allotted 21 legs.
The contest went back and forth but Bunting, who also missed double 12 for a nine-darter, chalked off five straight legs to make it 9-6 and it looked like he would go on to seal a comfortable victory.

However, Anderson survived match darts as he fought back to make it a level game but Bunting finally got the job done to win by two clear legs and seal the win.
Both players averaged less than 30 per cent on checkouts which made for darting drama and Bunting admitted to being nervous on stage.
After the match, he told Sky Sports: 'He's a quality operator. One of the best players to grace the stage and I have nothing but respect for Gary Anderson, and what a win in my career.
'I felt nervous anyway. I've got (son) Theo with me tonight, Toby, the missus, but we're through and I can relax now.
'I feel great and playing the best darts of my life and enjoying being in Blackpool – the fans have been incredible.'

James Wade produced a vintage performance as he swept Matchplay debutant Wessel Nijman aside in an 11-5 win.
There was nothing to separate the two players through the opening six legs but Wade jumped all over the young Dutchman's mistakes as he started to race clear.
The game started to turn when Wade brilliantly hit back-to-back bullseye finishes to go 8-4 up with his third ton-plus finish of the match.
That was in the middle of five straight legs that Wade put together to go within a leg of victory and the Machine pinned double tops to wrap up an impressive win.
Gian van Veen reeled off seven straight legs on his way to a thumping 11-5 victory over Danny Noppert.

Noppert started on fire and jumped 2-0 ahead but his Dutch compatriot shifted into top gear and went into the second break with a 7-3 lead which Noppert could not bounce back from.
Van Veen, who surprisingly knocked out Luke Humphries in the first round, threw four 180s and averaged just under 95 to book his spot in the quarter-finals.
Jonny Clayton continued his good run of form with an 11-8 win over Mike de Decker.
The Ferret threw nine 180s and never went behind in the contest but held off a couple of De Decker fightbacks to see him through safely to the quarter-finals.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot already commented on Alexander Isak as he asks to leave Newcastle

Arne Slot already thinks highly of Alexander Isak amid Liverpool's chase for the 25-year-old, who recently announced his desire to leave Newcastle Liverpool boss Arne Slot has already admitted he's in awe of Alexander Isak's shooting ability. The Newcastle striker sent shockwaves through English football on Thursday when he went public with his desire to leave the Premier League club after three years. ‌ Isak did not travel with Eddie Howe's side on their pre-season tour to Singapore and has had his head turned by interest from the league champions, who made a formal approach to sign him for £120million earlier this month. ‌ While the Magpies responded with the familiar line that the Sweden international is not for sale, the striker no longer sees his future with the League Cup winners, with Liverpool the favourites to capture his signature. ‌ Some may have thought the Reds' acquisition of Hugo Ekitike for £79million on Wednesday would have meant a deal for Isak was no longer feasible, but that doesn't seem to be the case for Slot, who seems keen to make him his sixth major signing of the summer. The Dutchman has enjoyed a summer of heavy spending with the Reds investing just shy of £300m following their Premier League triumph last season. The number nine position was a weak point for Slot, who opted to use Luis Diaz centrally for much of the season, with Darwin Nunez and the late Diogo Jota unable to find consistency in front of goal. Slot's appreciation for Isak should therefore come as no surprise, especially given the praise he handed the striker, who scored twice against Liverpool last season, after their 3-3 draw at St James' Park last December. Isak opened the scoring with a thunderous strike, which Slot commented on after full-time. He said: "That they are able to score a goal, that's not a surprise for me, and especially the first one, what a finish that was. That shot from Isak, I don't even know if Caoimh [Kelleher] saw that goal, as hard as it was." Liverpool won the return fixture 2-0 in February, and while the Swede was not in the squad, he was still subject to compliments from Slot. "It's an understatement to say that he's in fine form," he said. "I think he's in excellent form. It's the team performance which will help us control him. ‌ "The more ball possession we have, the easier it is to control him. Although he's definitely a threat on the counter-attack as well. The good thing for us is that we've got two centre-backs that are probably one of the best players that are able to play against him. "We have two very, very good centre-backs and that's definitely what you need if you face a striker with the quality of Alexander Isak." The striker came back to haunt Liverpool at Wembley when he scored Newcastle's second in their 2-1 win over the Reds in the League Cup final. ‌ Despite Isak's preference to leave the club, Newcastle are under little financial pressure to part ways with him, given they remain in line with profit and sustainability rules. The Swede also has a contract that runs until 2028. However, Howe may be wary of the damage that keeping an unhappy player can cause on the morale of the squad and with Premier League football returning in three weeks, a decision on his future must soon be made.

Parker's promoter calls for Usyk to ‘honour' title defence against Kiwi heavyweight

Joseph Parker 's promoter David Higgins has urged Oleksandr Usyk to defend his world titles against the Kiwi heavyweight next. Usyk became the undisputed heavyweight champion for the second time when he knocked out Daniel Dubois at Wembley on Saturday night. Parker is the WBO interim champion and the governing body has ordered negotiations to begin for him to face Usyk. However, the Ukrainian great could look to vacate his WBO belt in order to pursue a big-money fight as he nears the end of his illustrious career. Higgins has welcomed a clash with Usyk, and insists his man wants a shot at the heavyweight king rather than fighting for a vacated title. 'Joseph is hoping and praying that Usyk will want to defend the honour of undisputed champion, which not many people in recent times have achieved,' Higgins told Sky Sports. "Hardly anyone has even held that honour for more than a few months so we are hoping that Usyk will want to have a reign as heavyweight champion and will honour a unification against Joseph over a splinter of the belts. "We haven't given up on Usyk fighting Joseph next. A lot of people are suggesting that he won't but for me that is a bit of a soft outcome if he doesn't. We are hopeful of fighting Usyk and we are hopeful of doing it before the end of the year." Parker has previously held the WBO strap before after beating Andy Ruiz Jr in 2016. He made two successful defences of the belt before losing to Anthony Joshua in a unification clash. Further defeats by Dillian Whyte and Joe Joyce followed, but Parker has since forced his way back into title contention with impressive wins over Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang and Martin Bakole. He is now hoping for the next crack at Usyk, but the undisputed champion has plenty of other options on the table. A trilogy fight with Tyson Fury has been mooted, while Agit Kabayel is well-positioned as the WBC interim titlist. Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh has also revealed he would like to see Britain's rising star Moses Itauma take on Usyk, and it remains to be seen whether he will jump above Parker in the pecking order.
