
Check Out This Sweet Tea-Inspired Mint Julep Riff At This Louisville Bar
In Louisville, Kentucky, a city synonymous with bourbon and Southern hospitality, a new kind of Mint Julep has arrived—and it's just in time for the Kentucky Derby.
At Moonsong, the restaurant and bar inside Tempo by Hilton Louisville Downtown NuLu, in Kentucky, guests are sipping on an innovative twist on the traditional Derby Day drink. Dubbed the 'Donerail,' this cocktail reimagines the iconic Mint Julep by blending it with another Southern staple: sweet tea.
'Since there is no 'Derby Day' without a Mint Julep, we wanted to provide our Tempo by Hilton properties with a few options when it came to the signature drink,' says Kevin Quinn, Director of Brand Food & Beverage Programs for Hilton. 'The name is an ode to the 1913 Kentucky Derby winner–the biggest longshot victory in Derby history–and we chose to honor this legend by crossing the Julep with a sweet tea, the beloved beverage in the American South.'
The Donerail is available in both 'Spirited' and 'Free-Spirited' (non-alcoholic) versions, part of a larger program designed by Tempo by Hilton to ensure that every guest—drinker or not—enjoys a premium cocktail experience. 'For us, providing a unique bar program that enables guests to flex between spirited and free-spirited cocktails is one of the many ways we strategically built the Tempo brand to meet the needs of today's modern traveler,' he says.

The boozy Donerail features black tea-infused Maker's Mark bourbon, oleo saccharum, and fresh mint. The tea used is Bluestone Lane's Melbourne Brekky Tea, a full-bodied, organic Ceylon blend. 'This drink is a great example of our collaboration with Bluestone Lane,' says Quinn. 'It's a smooth, full-bodied and malty blend that pulls into the bourbon infusion perfectly.'
But what really sets the Donerail apart is its spirit-free counterpart. Crafted using Lyre's American Malt, it's a zero-proof option that doesn't skimp on complexity or mouthfeel. 'We've found a very happy home partnering with Lyre's,' says Quinn 'We really could not find another alcohol-free alternative that would better enable us to mirror our 'Free-Spirited' drinks to their 'Spirited' counterparts.'

To replicate the boldness of the tea-infused bourbon, the team simply brews the Melbourne Brekky Tea with more potency. 'We utilize the same tea but brewed with more strength than if you were to enjoy it on its own,' says Quinn. 'We do this to mimic the strong notes of black tea that is pulled through in the bourbon infusion.'
Guests can find the Donerail at Moonsong in both the Louisville and Raleigh Tempo by Hilton properties, as well as at Highball in New York and Lovelorn Lounge in Nashville. It's part of a special Kentucky Derby menu running from April 21 through May 3, which includes three Julep options: the classic Mint Julep (with spirited and non-alcoholic versions), a Peach Julep, and the star of the show, the Donerail.

And yes, it's served in a traditional julep cup. 'The Donerail, while not a traditional Mint Julep, should still be served in the traditional Julep, naturally,' says Quinn 'I am thrilled that the Donerail, as well as our other 'Free-Spirited' Mint Julep offerings, can fill a white space that currently exists for revelers that want to celebrate Kentucky Derby festivities without imbibing alcohol,' says Quinn. 'It is truly important to us that the 'Free-Spirited' selections mirror the 'Spirited' cocktails in every way – presentation, flavor profile, mouthfeel, and sophistication.'

‘Washington Black' has sky-high ambitions, but a steampunk setting and attention to character ground it
Medwin Harris (Sterling K. Brown), a friend of Wash and our trusty narrator, begins the tale with a roadmap: 'It's about family lost and family found. A story about a young man and the boy he used to be. The story of a boy brave enough to change the world. … If he can beat it, maybe we can, too. That's why this just ain't his story. It's our story.' To be clear: There is value here; this is a show worth watching. In an era when Black narratives are being scrubbed from Advertisement Wash makes his great escape from the plantation via 'cloud-cutter,' a blimp-like flying machine designed by his master's brother, the abolitionist Christopher 'Titch' Wilde (Tom Ellis). The pair crash land into a pirate ship. Onboard, Wash befriends first mate Barrington (Miles Yekinni), who is from Guyana. Hinds is also a Guyana native, and the writing gives real depth to the tenderness with which Barrington describes the home he left long ago. Barrington is a fully free man, he tells Wash. 'But your skin like mine,' young Wash points out. 'No matter how strong the bondage, we never stop pushin' back,' Barrington replies. 'We fight.' He teaches Wash about He hears Nat's Southern drawl and says, 'But you and I are different.' It's the same reaction as with Barrington: A confused child sees someone the same, but somehow not. 'No, boy, we all come from the same place,' Nat replies. 'We've been scattered across this white man's world for so long, surviving on the scraps he gives, some of us don't even remember anything else.' Advertisement Add in Medwin, who Wash meets years later (adult Wash is played by Ernest Kingsley Junior) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the point gets driven to smithereens. Medwin is much more of a father figure — and a keeper of the community — here than in the book, which allows Sterling K. Brown (also an executive producer) to bite into the material with his considerable acting chops. 'Why look out for me like you do?' Wash asks him. 'Only way Black folk gon' climb this mountain is if we pull each other along,' Medwin replies. But there is value here, too, beyond this main point, hammered home so hard. Hinds' adaptation focuses much more on Wash's love interest, Tanna Goff (Iola Evans). She's the daughter of a British marine scientist named G.M. Goff (Rupert Graves) — with whom she dives for ocean specimens — and the show makes a point of giving her complexities, wants, and backstory. This iteration makes Ryan B. Coogler's recent ' of life within that identity. By fleshing out Tanna's backstory — and by showing us her mother and family in the Solomon Islands — this adaptation adds dimension, both to the narrative itself, and to the love story between Tanna and Wash. 'We're both dreamers,' she tells him. 'Can't we dream up a different world?' Advertisement "Washington Black" makes ample use of its steampunk setting. There are notes of steampunk in the book — primarily in Titch's lighter-than-air airship, a hallmark of the genre — but the full flavor comes flooding through in the TV version. Titch arrives on-screen for the first time in a gleaming copper steam-powered truck; the pirate ship has an engine, driven by a perpetual motor, all wheels and coils; and the Goffs' diving suit, with its heavy metal helmet, is very Jules Verne. All of this lends wonder and levity to what can otherwise be serious and heavy subject matter. Steampunk is, of course, punk. It is by its very nature countercultural, anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian. So it makes sense that 'Washington Black' aims to fly high, to imagine a better future. Edugyan's novel asks: What is true freedom? Hinds' version tries to answer: It is the ability to dream up a different world, alongside family lost and family found. It's an admirable ambition, but — at least in the first four episodes available to review — we don't see that world yet. This show has a salient point to make, but can't quite seem to get there organically. Maybe those last four episodes will get us there — or maybe we have to dream up a different world ourselves. New Apple TV Plus thriller starring Jessica Chastain gets release date
She's played heavily-mascaraed televangelists, stoic CIA analysts, sweet Southern socialites and an underground poker boss — now Academy Award-winning actress Jessica Chastain is adding "The Savant" to her list of memorable performances, the titular role of the upcoming crime thriller miniseries for Apple TV Plus. Inspired by an August 2019 article by Andrea Stanley, entitled "Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?" and published by Cosmopolitan, the limited series has Chastain playing an undercover investigator who infiltrates online hate groups in an effort to stop domestic extremists before they act,' per the show's logline. It marks the performer's first major TV role since leading 2022's "George & Tammy," in which she portrayed country-music icon Tammy Wynette. "I've played real people that I could talk to, like Maya from 'Zero Dark Thirty,'' Chastain said in a December 2023 interview with The Saturday Paper. 'A lot of people came out and claimed to be Maya from 'Zero Dark Thirty'; none of them have been [her]. I spoke to her before I played the role ... I've also played characters where I didn't have the benefit of meeting with them and working with them, like Tammy Wynette. "With 'The Savant,' I didn't feel that it was as important to get all of her mannerisms because she's undercover. I wouldn't want to look and behave exactly like her, because I want to keep her hidden.' And after much delay — the streaming service had ordered the concept from Fifth Season all the way back in March 2023 — the eight-episode series will officially premiere on Friday, September 26 with its first two installments. Individual eps will drop weekly thereafter, culminating on Friday, November 7. The "tense and thrilling" drama was created by Melissa James Gibson, an Emmy-nominated showrunner and writer known for her work on "House of Cards" and "The Americans. " Along with Chastain, the cast of "The Savant" includes Nnamdi Asomugha, Cole Doman, Jordana Spiro, Trinity Lee Shirley, Toussaint Francois Battiste, and guest star Pablo Schreiber.
