Agriculture Dept. exploring option to supply coconut oil at lower rates through Supplyco: Minister
The department, along with the Kerala State Co-operative Apex Federation of Coconut Farmers Ltd (Kerafed), which markets the Kera brand coconut oil, is exploring options to supply it at affordable rates to the weaker sections of the society during the upcoming festival season, Mr. Prasad said, addressing a press conference here.
The Agriculture Department is in talks with Supplyco in this regard, he said.
Kerafed has already kicked off measures for coconut procurement at ₹1 higher than the market rates from farmer, Mr. Prasad said. This will serve to ensure the adequate supply of good quality coconut oil in the State, he said. The government decided to step in with a procurement plan, given the need to prevent the sale of adulterated coconut oil in the current situation, the Minister said.

Soaring prices to make this year's Onam feast a costly affair for Keralites
Stung by the exorbitant rise in the prices of essential items, including the skyrocketing price for coconut oil and raw coconut, the sumptuous Onam feast served on the banana leaf, consisting of a wide variety of dishes, will likely be a costly affair for Keralites this year. Setting the trend ahead of Onam, thousands of caterers engaged in the business of preparing the Onam feast have started taking bookings. As per the price list of the All Kerala Caterers Association, the largest body of caterers with over 4,000 caterers across the State, the price of an average Onam feast with 23 dishes will be around ₹500 per person this year. Speaking to The Hindu, Balan Kalyani, chief of Kalyani Catering and Events, said a bucket meal (also known as a box meal) for five persons, including 23 dishes and plantain leaf, is charged ₹2,500 this time, an increase of around ₹500 charged during the festive season of Vishu in April 2025. If there are bulk orders, the feast could be served in the range of ₹350-₹380 per head. This is the average price of the Onam feast served by caterers. There are even hotels that started receiving bookings for Onam sadya at ₹999. There would be some minor changes in the menu of caterers depending on the wish list of customers. The rise in prices is mainly due to the skyrocketing price of essentials, especially coconut oil and raw coconut, said Mr. Kalyani. According to Shahul Hameed, general secretary, All Kerala Caterers Association, raw coconut that was priced at ₹33 in the open market a year ago is now charged around ₹85, while coconut oil, which was priced around ₹210 per litre a year ago, is now charged over ₹500 per litre in the retail market. So is the case with the price of major ingredients, including the price of vegetables and other key ingredients such as parippu (tuvar dal). Mr. Hameed said the price of vegetables would likely go over the roof ahead of Onam, and the State government must make necessary market interventions to arrest the rising price of essential commodities. Ready-to-eat banquets Meanwhile, there has been a steady increase in the number of Malayalis opting for ready-to-eat Onam feasts prepared by caterers. On average, a caterer receives at least 500 bookings. Altogether, registered caterers under the association serve nearly 15 lakh feasts during the festival. But the actual size of the Onam feast industry would be two to three times this, considering the private caterers outside the association and hotels engaged in the business. Among the districts, Ernakulam and Thrissur lead, going by the number of bookings in the previous years, followed by Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. Caterers say that for a nuclear family, it is rather quite difficult to prepare dishes such as 'erishery', 'pulissery', 'kaalan', 'olan', 'pachadi', 'kichadi', 'kootu curry', and 'avial' together on the festival day. 'So the size of the industry is growing each year, but a market intervention by the government is necessary to put the price of essentials under control,' they added.

CIL sets ambitious supply target of 900 MT for FY26, plans Rs 16,000cr capex to support growth
The projected demand from the power sector for FY26 stands at 668.1 MT, and the company aims to cater to the entire requirement of power and non-regulated consumers while substituting imported coal wherever possible, the miner informed. According to the company's outlook by its management in its latest annual report, around 74 per cent of the total coal dispatch is expected to be consumed by the power sector alone, underscoring CIL's critical role in ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply across the country. Kolkata, Aug 4 (PTI) Coal India Ltd (CIL) has set an ambitious supply target of 900.24 million tonnes (MT) for 2025-26, representing over 18 per cent growth from the previous year's achievement, as part of a strategy to meet rising power demand and reduce imports. CIL's growth roadmap aligns with the government's objective of providing 24×7 power to every household, with plans to scale up production to 1 billion tonnes by 2028-29, the company said. To sustain growth while reducing environmental impact, the company is focusing on selective mining, coal beneficiation and blending, enhancing production from underground mines, and diversifying into cleaner coal technologies such as coal gasification and coal-to-liquid (CTL) projects. 'CIL intends to offer more coking coal to the steel sector and also supply coal for upcoming coal gasification projects,' the company said, outlining plans to explore alternative uses of domestic coal and improve long-term financial performance. For FY26, CIL has earmarked a capital investment of Rs 16,000 crore to maintain volume growth. Additional investments are planned in railway infrastructure development, solar and thermal power projects, coalbed methane extraction, and the revival of fertiliser plants. During FY25, total power generation in the country grew by 5 per cent to 1,826 billion units (BU), while coal-based generation increased to 1,299 BU. Against a projected demand of 661 MT from the power sector, CIL supplied 616.17 MT, achieving a materialisation rate of around 93 per cent. Coal supplies to the non-regulated sector peaked at 145.3 MT, up 8.1 per cent, while e-auction bookings rose to 89.38 MT. However, the average e-auction premium moderated to 48 per cent from 72 per cent in the previous fiscal. Meanwhile, the Chairman and Managing Director, P M Prasad, in his address, said Coal India is intensifying efforts to future-proof its business through strategic diversification and monetisation of assets. Addressing shareholders in the latest annual report, Prasad said the state-run coal mining major is actively pursuing projects in coal gasification, coalbed methane (CBM) extraction, solar power generation, and critical minerals exploration as part of its broader plan to align with the country's energy transition goals and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. These efforts, he noted, are also aimed at unlocking new revenue streams beyond thermal coal. In a first for India, CIL monetised the 2 MTPA Dugda Coal Washery in Jharkhand's Bokaro, under the build-own-operate model, valued at Rs 504 crore, marking the country's first-ever coal washery monetisation in line with the government's asset monetisation policy, he said.
