After Admitting She Felt Too Old To Play Adam Sandler's Love Interest In The 'Happy Gilmore' Sequel, Julie Bowen Revealed The Sweet Way He Reminded Her That She's The 'Heart Of The Movie'

Adam and Julie — who are 58 and 55, respectively — played lovers Happy and Virginia in the 1996 sports comedy. But despite the fact that Adam is only three years older than her, Julie was convinced that she wouldn't be cast in the forthcoming sequel, which drops on Netflix later this month. She told the Hollywood Reporter, 'I thought, 'Well, I won't be in it.' And that was OK… It's been 30 years, he's got a hottie. He's got some little bitty on the side, like a cart girl.'
'As a matter of fact, my children told me, before I was even told officially that there was a Happy Gilmore sequel, my now 18-year-old said, 'Mom, I hear they're doing a sequel and he's with Sydney Sweeney as a cart girl,'' she shared.
'I went, 'I'm hurt, and I so respect that move.' Of course, why wouldn't you? So when I got the call that I was actually in it, I was like, 'Are you sure? Come on,'' she added.

Now, Julie has opened up further about her thoughts being cast in Happy Gilmore 2 during a new appearance on Michael Rosenbaum's Inside of You podcast. 'I didn't think they'd bring me back at all,' she shared. 'I mean, who am I supposed to be? He's got to have a younger woman in this one, Happy Gilmore 2.'
After reiterating that she 'was surprised to be in it,' Julie later revealed the sweet way that Adam urged her to stop downplaying her role. 'I keep saying, 'I'm in it for, like, a heartbeat. I'm in it for, like, nothing,' and Adam's like, 'Stop saying that! You're the heart of the movie!'' she shared.

Elsewhere on the podcast, Julie recounted what it was like auditioning for the first Happy Gilmore film, admitting that she was 'very nervous' after seeing so many 'super sexy girls in the waiting room.'
'They were all sexy and they had it together,' she recalled. 'I was wearing jeans, maybe. I don't know, it was something very normal. The girl that had gone in before me was real, real bombshelly. I went in after, and I was very nervous 'cause I was like, 'They're gonna hire a hot girl,'' she said.

However, Julie noted that after 'chatting and hanging out' with the casting team who did her audition, she saw that they were 'visibly relieved.'
'We ended up chatting and hanging out, and I read, and they were relieved. They were visibly relieved. I go, 'What's going on?' They're like, 'Yeah, some of these girls are just so aggressively sexy.' And I was like, 'That's a bad thing?'' she said.
You can find Julie's full appearance on the Inside of You podcast here. Happy Gilmore 2 will be available to stream on Netflix from July 25.

Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman takes rest of the year off from tour to have hand surgery
The show must go on, but for Fall Out Boy, the band will be doing so without lead guitarist Joe Trohman for the remainder of 2025. In a statement posted to social media Monday, the musician said he would need the rest of the year off to undergo surgery on his right hand. "Hey everyone, after years of managing ongoing issues with my right hand, it's become clear that I need surgery to avoid permanent damage," Trohman wrote. "Unfortunately, this means I'll have to take the rest of the year off from playing with the band. The silver lining is that I'm on track for a full recovery." He continued, "The band will still be playing all scheduled shows. I'm looking forward to recovering so that I can get back out there with the guys. Thanks so much for the love and support." Trohman, who has served as guitarist for the band since its inception in 2001, previously took some time away from the group in January 2023. At the time, he said he'd be stepping away for an undetermined period to focus on his mental health, writing in a social media statement, "Neil Young once howled that it's better to burn out than to fade away. But I can tell you unequivocally that burning out is dreadful. Without divulging all the details, I must disclose that my mental health has rapidly deteriorated over the past several years. So, to avoid fading away and never returning, I will be taking a break from work which regrettably includes stepping away from Fall Out Boy for a spell." He added, "I must recover which means putting myself and my mental health first. Thank you to everyone, including my bandmates and family, for understanding and respecting this difficult, but necessary, decision." Trohman resumed playing with Fall Out Boy in May of that year. The band — which also includes lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Pete Wentz, and drummer Andy Hurley — has not yet revealed who will be picking up Trohman's mantle in his absence, but the group has a busy slate over the next few months. Next up, they're expected to play Tuesday at the Cowboys Music Festival in Calgary, and later at the Minnesota Yacht Club festival on July 19 in St. Paul. From there, they have two shows as part of the Summer Sonic in Japan August 16-17. In late August, the band has a trio of shows in Brazil, and as of now, will end the summer at the Oceans Calling Festival in Ocean City, Md., on Sept. 28. Pearl Jam's Drummer Matt Cameron Leaves Band After 27-Year Run
Drummer Matt Cameron stunned fans by announcing his departure from Pearl Jam following the conclusion of the legendary rock band's Dark Matter World Tour. Cameron and his band mates confirmed the news Monday in a pair of social media posts, but notably did not offer a reason for the musician's unexpected exit. 'After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,' Cameron said, before going on to thank lead singer Eddie Vedder, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, and bassist Jeff Ament for 'giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.' 'I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It's been an incredible journey. More to follow,' he continued. 'I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.' Pearl Jam shared similar sentiments in its statement, praising Cameron as 'a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer.' 'He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings,' the band wrote. 'It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.' Messages from Matt and the band:After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam. Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled… — Pearl Jam (@PearlJam) July 7, 2025 By Monday afternoon, Cameron's announcement had drawn a plethora of supportive comments from fellow musicians and other public figures. 'You have inspired us all and will continue. All the best, Matt,' former Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk wrote on Instagram. 'Gossip Girl' actor and Pretty Reckless frontwoman Taylor Momsen said, 'You are and will continue to be amazing at all you do.' A San Diego, California native, Cameron rose to prominence in the late 1980s as the drummer for the rock band Soundgarden which, like Pearl Jam, got its start in Seattle. He joined Pearl Jam in 1998, a year after Soundgarden's first breakup. In 2010, he began playing with both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden after the latter band re-grouped, until the 2017 death of Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell. Though Cameron was Pearl Jam's fifth drummer, his stint was considerably longer than each of his predecessors. Dave Krusen, the band's first drummer, was recruited by Gossard and former guitarist Jeff Ament in 1990, but left after a year. He was then replaced by Matt Chamberlain, who played with the band for only a few weeks before Dave Abbruzzese took over. Jack Irons stepped in following Abbruzzese's 1994 exit, and was succeeded by Cameron four years later. Cameron was first inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of Pearl Jam. The 62-year-old will be inducted a second time later this year, this time as a member of Soundgarden.
