Saudi sponsor accused of assaulting Egyptian workers; Cairo embassy steps in

A group of Egyptian workers in Saudi Arabia reportedly suffered an assault by their sponsor (Kafeel), prompting intervention from Cairo's embassy in Riyadh, according to the Egyptian community in the Kingdom and local media, RT Arabic reported.
A video of the incident, circulating on social media, shows a Saudi individual assaulting one of the Egyptian workers inside his accommodation. This escalation led the workers to file a complaint with their embassy in Riyadh, which subsequently initiated legal action against the Saudi sponsor.
On Thursday, the Egyptian community in Saudi Arabia announced via a Facebook post that the Egyptian Embassy in Riyadh held a meeting that morning with the assaulted workers.
The meeting, attended by Consul General Ambassador Tarek El-Meligy and labor advisors from the embassy, involved officials listening to each worker's testimony individually and fully documenting their accounts to prepare for securing all their rights in accordance with established regulations.
The community affirmed that a legal pathway has been opened to guarantee the workers' rights and ensure accountability for those responsible for the assault.
They also emphasized that this was an isolated incident that in no way represents the nature of the relationship between the brotherly Egyptian and Saudi peoples, nor does it reflect the general reality of Egyptian labor in the Kingdom, which has enjoyed respect, appreciation, and care from all Saudi authorities for many decades.

Pogba signs for Monaco, hoping to revive career - World

Paul Pogba has signed a two-year deal with Ligue 1 side Monaco to return to football after a near two-year absence, the club announced on Saturday. The 2018 World Cup winner has made only 12 appearances across the last three seasons due to injuries, an 18-month doping ban and an extortion case in which he was the victim. Pogba failed a drugs test in August 2023 after a match for Juventus and has been free to return to football since March, although his contract at the Italian giants had been terminated last year. The midfielder will now play club football in Ligue 1 for the first time in his professional career. "I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it's just a matter of time," the 32-year-old told French television last weekend. Pogba played in the Le Havre youth team before signing for Manchester United in 2009. He made only a handful of first-team appearances for the three-time European champions before signing for Juventus in 2012. Pogba won four consecutive Serie A titles in Turin before rejoining United for a then-world record 105 million euros ($123 million). He moved back to Juventus three years ago but struggled with a series of injuries. In 2024, his brother Mathias was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for his role in a plot to extort 13 million euros from Pogba in 2022. Pogba has scored 11 goals in 91 appearances for the France national team, playing a starring role and scoring in their World Cup final victory over Croatia seven years ago. His new club Monaco will play in the Champions League next season after finishing third in Ligue 1 last term. Uganda's president seeks a seventh term that would bring him closer to 5 decades in power - Africa

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Saturday sought nomination for a seventh term, a move that would bring him closer to five decades in power. Museveni, 80, has defied calls for his retirement, as critics warn that he has veered into authoritarianism with virtually no opposition even within his ruling National Resistance Movement party. He was welcomed by a large crowd of supporters as he went to collect nomination papers from the offices of the ruling party in Kampala, the Ugandan capital. Museveni first took power as head of a rebel force in 1986. He has since been elected six times, though recent elections have been marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. His main opponent in the last election was the popular entertainer known as Bobi Wine, who has also declared his candidacy in the polls set for January 2026. Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has seen many associates jailed or go into hiding as security forces cracked down on opposition supporters. Museveni has dismissed Wine as 'an agent of foreign interests' who cannot be trusted with power. Wine has been arrested many times on various charges but has never been convicted. He insists he is running a nonviolent campaign. Decades ago, Museveni himself had criticised African leaders who overstayed their welcome in office. In Uganda, lawmakers did the same thing for him when they jettisoned the last constitutional obstacle — age limits — for a possible life presidency. His son, army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has asserted his wish to succeed his father, raising fears of hereditary rule. A long-time opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, has been jailed since November over alleged treason charges his lawyers say are politically motivated. Besigye, a physician who retired from Uganda's military at the rank of colonel, is a former president of the Forum for Democratic Change party, for many years Uganda's most prominent opposition group. The East African country has never seen a peaceful transfer of power since its independence from Britain in 1962. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Egypt urges int'l action after Israeli settlers kill three Palestinians in West Bank attack - Foreign Affairs

Egypt has called on the international community to act after Israeli settlers shot and killed three Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. The killings took place on Wednesday during an attack on the village of Kafr Malik near Ramallah. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident in a statement issued Saturday, describing it as part of a pattern of 'systematic attacks' against Palestinians. The ministry said such violence violates international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention and warned that continued attacks undermine efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region. Egypt also called for international accountability, urging action to protect Palestinians from what it described as settler crimes. The ministry said the international community has a responsibility to confront what it called the ongoing injustice faced by Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Cairo reiterated its position that all Israeli settlements in the occupied Arab territories are illegal and pose a serious obstacle to resolving the Palestinian issue. The statement also restated Egypt's support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
