Minister pledges to curb extremism among foreign workers
PETALING JAYA : The government is stepping up efforts to counter extremist ideologies among foreign workers after 36 foreigners were arrested for their alleged involvement in a foreign radical militant movement.
Religious affairs minister Na'im Mokhtar said he has instructed the Islamic development department (Jakim) and the Islamic Propagation Foundation of Malaysia (Yadim) to work with the home ministry to counter radical ideology among foreign workers.
Na'im said that although not all foreign workers are involved, the risk of radical influence must be addressed. 'We strongly oppose any ideology that promotes extremist actions as they have no place in Islam,' he said.
He hoped the collaboration between religious agencies and the home ministry would curb the spread of extremist ideologies among foreign workers.
Earlier today, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said the foreigners arrested last week recruited new members for the Islamic State from migrant workers in Malaysia at factories, petrol stations and construction sites.

KOTA BHARU, July 6 — The presence of dozens of illegal crossings along the Kelantan-Thailand border has raised serious national security concerns, said Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan. He emphasised that Kelantan's border is an integral part of Malaysia's international boundary with Thailand and must be protected with utmost vigilance. 'The border spans approximately 105 kilometres, with most of it covering Sungai Golok, which separates Kelantan from Thailand's Narathiwat province. However, behind these checkpoints lie dozens of illegal crossings frequently used for cross-border activities,' he said in a statement on his official Facebook page today. Mohamed Fadzli also noted that the region's geography and close familial ties between communities on both sides of the border further heighten its vulnerability to security threats. In light of this, the state government stressed the need to strengthen border enforcement through increased personnel deployment, enhanced security assets and coordinated efforts among all relevant agencies. He added that the state government is fully committed to working together to ensure the nation's borders remain secure. Woman dies after car skids into drain in Jempol
SEREMBAN, July 6 — An 83-year-old woman was killed after the car she was travelling in skidded and crashed into a drain along Jalan Kampung Batu Bakar here yesteray. Jempol police chief Supt Norhisham Mustapar said the 3.15 pm incident involved a Perodua Myvi driven by an 85-year-old man with two passengers. He said the car was travelling from Kampung Batu Bakar to Taman ACBE, Bahau, when the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and crash into a nearby drain. 'As a result of the accident, the elderly woman, who was seated in the front passenger seat, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. 'The driver and the rear passenger, a 41-year-old Indonesian woman, were taken to Kuala Pilah Hospital for treatment,' he said in a statement today. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. — Bernama

Police arrest three Chinese women for paying RM8,700 hotel bill with counterfeit cash
KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Three female China nationals were arrested after they tried to pay for hotel rooms using counterfeit RM100 banknotes on Thursday. Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said the women, 18 to 47, used 87 fake RM100 banknotes to pay a hotel bill of RM8,700. 'During the arrests, police seized 87 fake RM100 banknotes, along with one RM50 and RM20 note each, along with two Lous Vuitton bags, hotel room access cards and three iPhones,' he said in a statement yesterday. He added that investigation papers have been opened under Section 498B of the Penal Code and the suspects have been remanded for six days till July 9. He advised the public to be cautious about banknotes and to report any suspected counterfeit banknotes to the police of Bank Negara Malaysia immediately. — Bernama
