St Pats form 'unacceptable' says Stephen Kenny as FC Hegelmann visit in UEFA Conference League

Irish Examiner09-07-2025
St Patrick's Athletic must rediscover their shooting boots to clear the first hurdle of the Conference League against Lithuanian opposition.
FC Hegelmann are joint-second in the table of the A Lyga that, like Ireland, runs through the summer.
Last season's march to the playoff stage of the same competition was the highlight of Stephen Kenny's first season back in club management.
For that to be replicated, a strong start in front of a restricted capacity of 2,500 is essential for a side worryingly out of form.
Compounding their winless run of six matches is the barren attacking aspect. Just once have they hit the net, coming into their European expedition on the back of successive stalemates against Cork City and Bohemians.
'It is unacceptable, of course,' said Kenny of their lull in results. 'I am hugely disappointed with that but at the same time I understand that everyone is giving everything.'
That's the minimum required against a side showcasing a multi-national side, led by Cameroonian striker Abdel Kader Njoya.
If they emerge victorious from the tie that concludes in Lithuania next Thursday, the Saints will then face the winners from the clash of Nomme Kalju (Estonia) and Partizani (Albania).
That would also double their European prize money, nearing the halfway mark of the €1.28m grossed from last year's progress.
'We worked hard last season to move up the table to finish third and qualify for Europe again,' added Kenny. 'European nights at Richmond Park are special.
'There's no point in qualifying for Europe and just getting knocked out. You have to show a level of ambition and we will have to fight hard over two legs to get through.'

Rory Gaffney reveals fitness battle before leading Shamrock Rovers' title charge with crucial goals

The 35-year-old has fired Shamrock Rovers to the brink of another league title with ten goals and a relentless work ethic that has won the trust of boss Stephen Bradley RORY GAFFNEY admitted he had to sprint before he could think of another Shamrock Rovers' run. Gaffney, 35, moved the Hoops' a step closer to their fifth title in six years on Sunday night with two goals to beat Derry City at Tallaght Stadium. Advertisement 2 Rory Gaffney has ten goals in all competitions this season for the Hoops. 2 Gaffey bagged a double against Derry City on Sunday and chipped in during their Euro clash vs St Joseph's It gives them a ten-point lead at the top with ten games to go, with Gaffney a key man in that run as he has also scored pivotal winning goals against Waterford and Galway United. He has ten-goals in all competitions this season and has had boss Stephen Bradley singing his praises all year. Yet, when the season kicked off last February, Gaffney - from Tuam - was out of contract and training without pay in a bid to prove his fitness after a write-off of a 2024 season. An ankle problem meant his season ended last April, and Gaffney - who turned down two-year offers elsewhere to sign a one -year with the Hoops last year - had few options. Advertisement But Gaffney never had any doubt as he felt he just had to prove his fitness. He said: 'When you get a bit older people kind of question your age, but I lived a clean life for 10-15 years. 'I've never been a big drinker, I've always been mad into training and coming from a GAA background, you do plenty of gym work. 'I know I've been unlucky and had a lot of big injuries, but I've only had three or four muscle injuries in 10-15 years, so I've been very lucky like that. Advertisement 'I know last year I was injured but I was training non-stop, I just couldn't sprint, that was the issue. When I was sprinting I'd break down.' Eventually, he and the club decided an operation was required which ended any hopes of being involved in last year's run-in or Conference League campaign. Guehi & Eze to STAY at Palace? Transfer Blow for Liverpool & Arsenal! And Gaffney set out to get back fit and remain a Hoop. Boss Stephen Bradley revealed: 'I just trust Rory, I've known him a long time, I played with him (at Limerick in 2012 and 2013), I've known him a long, long time. Advertisement 'And Rory's…there's no grey area with Rory. He's straight down the line, he tells you what he's thinking, what he's feeling. 'We spoke (during the winter), he asked could he come back and prove himself in pre-season. 'And I said 'I'd love that', and he did. And he came back, did his work, and you could see he was ready to go. If he keeps going like that, there's another few years left in him.' Gaffney - who joined the Hoops in 2020 and was player of the year in 2022 - was also confident he would earn a new deal once he proved his fitness. Advertisement He added: 'I just knew I had to get fit. I played a game against Bohs U20s on the Friday night or Saturday night (before the season started) and just proved my fitness in that. 'I was able to run. I didn't touch the ball, but I was able to run. The gaffer saw I could run and said 'that's enough for me'. 'I haven't missed a training session since I signed this season. I haven't played a whole lot at the start of the season but I was doing a lot of extra training.' Rovers' still look after him as Gaffney - who has featured in 21 of the 27 games in all competitions when he was available - has played just one 90 minutes. Advertisement NOT DONE YET And the 35-year-old agreed with Bradley that he also believes he can continue on next season, pointing to 37-year-old Padraig Amond at Waterford as an example. He added: 'How I feel now, if it was the end of the season, there is no question that I could play again next year. 'I think it's taking it season by season but the last thing I want to be doing is travelling up and down from Galway knowing I'm not going to play, being poor in training and not impacting matches or not getting a game. 'I've had a good run at it now, I don't want to drag it on if there's no reason to.' Advertisement But Bradley insisted that Gaffney's knowhow means he can make an impact even if as he gets older having changed his game since his Limerick days over a decade ago. Bradley added: 'He was raw, Rory was all power and pace then. That's what he relied on. It was a dream to play him as a midfielder, but now his whole game is refined. 'That just comes with age, understanding, experience.' Gaffney added: 'The league was a different league back then and it was part-time and nowhere as fit, didn't train as much, never recorded games so you couldn't watch games back. Advertisement 'Now I won't be able to sleep as I can watch that game back before I go to bed and you can pick out things you haven't done well and things that have gone well and you can learn from that. 'I didn't really start watching games back until I was 26 which is crazy when you think about it but it shows how far the league has come.' And it has helped Gaffney become a firm favourite in Tallaght since arriving just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020. Injured in his first season, he was a key man as Rovers won four-in a row with titles added in 2021, 2022 and 2023 before he missed most of last season through injury. Advertisement And Gaffney is confident the Hoops can reclaim the title this season as they now lead second-placed Bohemians by ten points with ten games to go. TITLE CHARGE Gaffney added: 'We've 26 games played, and 52 points. That's two points a game, that normally wins the league. 'You don't want to be arrogant or disrespectful to other teams but we'd back ourselves now if everyone was starting on no points with ten games to go. 'Why wouldn't we back ourselves with a ten-point headstart, plus our goal difference? And all the teams have to play each other again, there is going to be a lot of six pointers.' Advertisement But before that, the Hoops are in European action this week as they travel to Kosovo to face Ballkani in the Conference League third round first leg. Rovers' hope to be at full strength with Graham Burke and Jack Byrne both not risked with small injuries against Derry City on Sunday.

First Div: Dundalk dispatch Longford to maintain grip on promotion race

Dundalk clocked up their biggest home win of the season against Longford Town at Oriel Park to maintain their six point lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity Men's First Division table. Dean Ebbe scored in either half with Eoin Kenny and Declan McDaid also on target as Ciarán Kilduff's side made it two wins from two over the Bank Holiday weekend having previously only managed three points out of a possible 12 on previous double game-week weekends. There were some nerves late on when Oisin Hand pulled a goal back for Wayne Groves' men but, in truth, the Lilywhites were full value for their three points. While Cobh Ramblers' comfortable home win over Wexford meant they didn't extend their lead, the league leaders did open an eight point gap between themselves and Bray Wanderers, who drew 2-2 away to Finn Harps. With a strong breeze behind them, the home side started on top with Aodh Dervin going close to breaking the deadlock against his home town club on five minutes with a left-foot shot from just outside the box that came back off the inside of the post. The breakthrough would arrive on 15 minutes. Longford looked like they had got out of jail when Rohan Vaughan was denied by the feet of Harry Halwax after being teed up by Daryl Horgan but Dervin kept the rebound alive before picking out Kenny at the edge of the box. The 19-year-old then fired high to the net for his first home goal since scoring the winner against the Midlanders at Oriel Park in March. What a strike from Eoin Kenny! 😮 A brilliant half-volley finds the roof of the Longford Town net. — League of Ireland (@LeagueofIreland) August 4, 2025 Horgan then had an effort pushed clear by Halwax shortly after before the visitors had a couple of good chances to level. The first arrived on 24 minutes when a mistimed clearance by Mayowa Animasahun allowed Fran Campbell to get a shot off that was tamely into the arms of Peter Cherrie. The striker then went even closer three minutes after being slipped in by Dean George but this time he was denied by the right foot of the veteran goalkeeper before George pulled the rebound wide. That was to prove costly as Dundalk doubled their lead on 34 minutes. Kenny picked the ball up on the right before driving past six Longford players into the box. His eventual left-foot shot was weak but was seized upon by Ebbe, who slid in to squeeze the ball to the bottom right hand corner for his eighth goal of the campaign. Kenny went close to putting the result beyond doubt within three minutes of the restart but his curling effort from inside the box was just the wrong side of the post. The Co Louth side had two further big chances in quick succession after that with JR Wilson's header pushed onto the crossbar by Halwax before Vinnie Leonard's follow up rattled the underside of the bar. The third would arrive on the hour mark when Keith Ward's corner was headed down by Leonard, with Ebbe on hand to rifle past Halwax from the edge of the six yard box. Vaughan had another big chance to add to his side's lead on 73 minutes after being played in by Kenny but Halwax was quick off his line to snuff out the danger. Harry Groome then pulled an effort wide after being teed up by McDaid three minutes later. To their credit, Longford did manage to pull a goal back on 78 minutes with Hand rising highest to glance Kyle Robinson's corner to the net. They then went close to reducing the deficit to one three minutes later when Mohammed Boudiaf let fly with a shot from just outside the box that cannoned back off the inside of the post. Daniel Norris had another chance soon after when he beat the advancing Cherrie to a 50/50 ball at the edge of the Dundalk box but his effort too was just wide. The result was put beyond doubt five minutes from time when Kenny found space on the right to cross for McDaid to bundle home his first goal for Dundalk to ensure the three points. Dundalk: Peter Cherrie; John Ross Wilson, Mayowa Animasahun (Conor O'Keeffe 74), Vinnie Leonard, Shane Tracey; Aodh Dervin, Keith Ward (Harry Groome 74); Eoin Kenny, Dean Ebbe (Declan McDaid 62), Daryl Horgan (Andy Paraschiv 62); Rohan Vaughan (Gbemi Arubi 81). Longford Town: Harry Halwax; Osaze Irhue (Emre Topcu 36), Oisin Hand, Eric Yoro (Andrew Spain 6), Dean O'Shea; Pharrell Manuel (Kyle Robinson 66), Sean Moore; Dean George (Daragh Murtagh 66), Daniel Norris, Mohamed Boudiaf; Francis Campbell (Stefan Ugbesia 66). Referee: Darragh White. Elsewhere, Cobh Ramblers kept the gap at the top at six points with a dominant 4-0 win over Wexford FC at St Colman's Park. The game was more or less done and dusted at half-time, Shane Griffin and Cian Coleman scoring within six minutes of one another around the half hour mark, before Cian Murphy found the net on the stroke of the interval to leave it 3-0 at the break. Shane Griffin heads Cobh Ramblers into the lead! 🐏 — League of Ireland (@LeagueofIreland) August 4, 2025 A James Crawford own goal rounded off the win for the home side, who maintained their grip on second spot with a second victory in four days. Cian Curtis's 98th minute equaliser snatched a draw for Bray Wanderers away to Finn Harps in Ballybofey. Bray, currently vying for Cobh for second spot in the table, trailed 2-0 until midway through the second half, Barry McNamee giving the hosts the lead with an own goal from James Duggan shortly after the resumption plunging the promotion chasers into a hole. However, Max Murphy's goal gave the lifeline on the 69th minute. It looked to be in vain until Curtis's late, late equaliser after meeting a corner at the near post with a well-directed glancing header. Late drama in Donegal! 😮 Cian Curtis equalises for Bray Wanderers in the 98th minute! — League of Ireland (@LeagueofIreland) August 4, 2025 Ewan Lee's 84th minute equaliser saw Kerry FC grab a draw away to Treaty United in a derby clash at Market's Field. Patrick Ferry gave Treaty the lead midway through the first half before Lee's leveller gave the visitors a draw, nudging them above Longford Town and into eighth spot on goal difference. Athlone Town remain rooted to the foot of the table after a 2-1 loss at home to UCD, Cole Omorehiomwan's lead goal on the hour being cancelled by Sean Brennan and a late winner from Hugh Smith.

Dundalk hit four past Longford Town to remain top of First Division

SSE Airtricity Men's First Division: Dundalk 4 Longford Town 1 Dean Ebbe and Eoin Kenny scored their first goals at Oriel Park since March to once again put Longford Town to the sword to ensure Dundalk remain six points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity Men's First Division table. Neither player had been on target since the 2-1 victory over the Midlanders almost five months ago but their efforts, coupled with a first goal for his new club for Declan McDaid, ensured that Ciarán Kilduff's side remain six points clear of Cobh Ramblers in the race for automatic promotion to the top flight. The home side were on top from the off with Aodh Dervin hitting the post inside five minutes before turning provider for his side's opener on 15 minutes when he teed Kenny up on the edge of the box for a shot that flew high to the net past Harry Halwax, who moments earlier had denied Rohan Vaughan with his feet. Dean Ebbe, second from right, celebrates with teammates, from left, Mayowa Animasahun, Eoin Kenny, and Daryl Horgan after scoring. His eventual left-foot shot was weak but was seized upon by Ebbe, who slid in to squeeze the ball to the bottom right hand corner. It looked like it would be a comfortable three points for the league leaders when Ebbe added a third on the hour mark with a close range finish after Vinnie Leonard had headed down Keith Ward's corner but Longford set up a nervy few moments when Oisin Hand headed Kyle Robinson's corner to the net on 78 minutes. Mohammed Boudiaf then hit the post before Daniel Norris also went close for Wayne Groves' side but the three points were ensured when McDaid bundled in Kenny's cross five minutes from time.
