
What is AI bias?

The term 'AI bias' refers to situations whereby an artificial intelligence (AI) system produces prejudiced results, as a consequence of flaws in its machine learning process. Often, AI bias mirrors society's inequalities, be they around race, gender, class, nationality, and so on.
In this instalment of Finextra's Explainer series, we ask where bias in AI originates, the consequence of feeding models skewed data, and how the risks can be mitigated.
The sources of bias
AI bias can develop in three key areas, namely:
1. The data fed to the model
If the data used to train an AI is not representative of the real world, and contains existing societal biases, the model will ingrain these prejudices and perpetuate them in its decisioning.
2. The algorithms
The very design of an AI algorithm can also introduce bias and misrepresentation. Some algorithms may overstate or understate patterns in data – resulting in skewed predictions.
3. The programmed objectives
The goals that an AI system is programmed to achieve can also be biased. If objectives are not designed with fairness and equity in mind, the engine may discriminate against certain groups.
Loan applications: A case study
So, what relevance does AI bias have to the financial services industry?
Tools powered by AI are currently being rolled out by financial institution (FI)s across the globe. Indeed, AI is being deployed to automate operations; detect fraud; manage economic risk; trade algorithmically; design personalised products; support data analytics and reporting; and even improve customer services. This technology is embedding itself in bank operations, and our dependency on it will only become deeper. It is vital for the integrity of our financial systems, therefore, that AI bias is identified, understood, and controlled.
For example, in the world of loan applications AI-powered approval systems are increasingly being leveraged to streamline banks' back-office processes. In some cases, loans have been denied to individuals from certain socioeconomic backgrounds, as a result of bias baked into AI models' data or algorithms.
In 2021, an investigation by The Markup found lenders were more likely to deny mortgages to people of colour than to white people with similar financial characteristics. Indeed, AI-powered mortgage approval systems meant that 80% of black applicants were more likely to be rejected, along with 40% of Latinos, and 70% of Native Americans.
Unchecked AI bias and its consequences
Failing to address AI bias is not just discriminatory for the end-users of financial services. It can also result in legal liabilities, reputational damage, financial and operational risks, as well as regulatory non-compliance, for the institutions.
The European Union (EU)'s AI Act compels providers of AI systems to ensure their training, validation, and testing datasets stand up to an appropriate examination of biases and correction measures. Failure to meet this instruction could trigger penalties and fines.
Operational and ethical issues aside, allowing bias in AI to fester is simply bad for business. Indeed, bias can reduce the overall accuracy and effectiveness of AI tools – hindering their potential to deliver on the outcomes they were designed to.
Mitigating the risks
The fuel of today's industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, is data – and the locomotive that it powers is the intelligent system. If the fuel is not refined (and bias-free) it will damage both AI's ability to run efficiently and consumers' trust in the technology itself.
Though bias in datasets may never be entirely erased, it is incumbent on AI providers and the institutions that deploy it to mitigate the risks. Banks must strive for data diversity to ensure training data is representative. Algorithm design must be reviewed to guarantee processes are fair and equitable, and all AI systems should become transparent and explainable, so that any flaws can be ironed out. Supporting banks' efforts with these challenges are bias detection and mitigation tools, which help to flag and remedy cases of AI bias, as and when they appear.

Microsoft confirms major job cuts
Microsoft has confirmed it will cut around 4 percent of its global workforce as it ramps up investments in artificial intelligence. The tech giant will slash around 9,000 jobs across different teams, geographies and levels of experience, the company said on Wednesday. 'We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace,' Microsoft said in a statement. It is the fourth round of layoffs at Microsoft this year following the cutting of 1 percent of its headcount in January, 6,000 further job cuts in May and 300 more in June. In April, Microsoft said it planned to use third-party firms to handle more sales of software to small and mid-size customers. The company had a global headcount of 228,000 at the end of June 2024. Microsoft has a market capitalization of over $3 trillion - the biggest in the world - but it is looking to rein in costs as it funnels billions into its ambitious bet on artificial intelligence. The news comes days after Amazon's CEO announced brutal workforce cuts as the company also increases its use of AI. Amazon boss Andy Jassy said he plans to reduce the company's corporate workforce over the next few years as the tech will make certain roles redundant. Jassy told employees in a note seen by the Wall Street Journal that AI was a once-in-a-lifetime technological advancement and it has already transformed how Amazon operates. 'As we roll out more Generative AI and agents, it should change the way our work is done,' he wrote in the memo. It is not yet clear how many workers will lose their jobs and when the cuts will come. 'It's hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce,' Jassy explained. Those close to the matter told the outlet that a large chunk of the decrease in headcount would hopefully occur via attrition. This means as employees move on their roles will not be filled. However, this will not cover all of the reductions and layoffs are still expected to occur at some point. Amazon is the second largest employer in the country and is seen as a bellwether for employment stability. The company has already slowed hiring, suggesting AI is already influencing the company's staffing needs. It is also clear the company is betting big on the new technology, after it revealed plans to splash $100 billion on data centers that AI depends on. It comes as Americans grow increasingly concerned about the impact of AI on the jobs market.

Tech billionaires led by Palmer Luckey to launch new bank to rival SVB, FT reports
July 2 (Reuters) - A group of tech billionaires led by Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey are launching a new crypto-focused U.S. bank to fill the void left by Silicon Valley Bank's collapse, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. The group also includes Peter Thiel's Founders Fund and Palantir (PLTR.O), opens new tab co-founder Joe Lonsdale, a major donor to U.S. President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign, the report said. Before a March 2023 liquidity crisis, SVB had long been a major primary banking channel for early-stage technology firms and venture capitalists - entities deemed too risky by traditional banks. Many startups struggled to access capital and meet immediate obligations such as payrolls after the bank collapsed. The proposed lender, called Erebor, has applied for a national bank charter and plans to serve technology businesses in areas such as artificial intelligence, crypto, defense and manufacturing, as well as individuals who work at or invest in them, according to its charter application. The application for Erebor, to be headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, outlines a digital-only model, with a secondary office in New York. According to the charter application, the bank will be led by co-CEOs Owen Rapaport and Jacob Hirshman, a former adviser to stablecoin company Circle (CRCL.N), opens new tab. Erebor is also planning to hold stablecoins on its balance sheet. A crypto asset class pegged to currencies such as the U.S. dollar, stablecoins are designed to hold a steady value backed by reserves. Fintechs and established financial institutions are increasingly adopting stablecoins to accelerate cross-border payments faster, simplify settlements and expand access to digital financial services. The bank aims to become "the most regulated entity conducting and facilitating stablecoin transactions", according to its charter application. Luckey and Lonsdale are not expected to be involved in the day-to-day management of the bank, the Financial Times report said. Luckey, Thiel, Lonsdale and a spokesperson for Erebor did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.

iPhone glitch leaves baffled users with a 'black dot of death' on their screens - here's what to do if you spot one on your Apple handset
A mysterious iPhone glitch has left some baffled users with a 'black dot of death' on their screens. As the name suggests, the issue sees users left with a small black circle at the top of the screen, just below the Dynamic Island. Reddit user @seseweto first posted a picture showing the black dot on the screen of his iPhone 15 seven days ago. He wrote: 'Black dot of death on my iphone 15 ios 18.5. Suddenly the black dot appeared on the screen. 'If I take a screenshot it doesn't appear, that's why I have to take a picture with another phone.' Since then, several other users have come forward with the same problem. 'Had same issue. Had to get my 16p screen replaced,' one user commented. Another added: 'Same. Mine were in the top right of my screen by the battery.' While the reason for the issue remains unclear, several Reddit users have put forward their theories. 'If it doesn't appear in a screenshot it's probably a hardware issue,' one user suggested. Another wrote: 'OLED screen damage. Impact on that spot. Black circle will continue to grow. Screen will eventually need to be replaced as it grows.' And one said: 'It's the display. If you take it to an Apple Store, if you're under warranty or have AppleCare+, they'll replace the display for you for free.' Others took a more jokey stance on the situation. 'Dynamic archipelago,' one user wrote, in reference to Apple's Dynamic Island feature, which appears at the top of the screen whenever your iPhone is unlocked. 'That's the new punch hole cam,' another joked. And one quipped: 'Black wallpaper and problem solved.' MailOnline has contacted Apple for comment on the issue. If the screen isn't working on your iPhone or iPad, Apple advises a four step process to assess what the issue might be. Firstly, restart your iPhone by pressing and holding either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider apepars. Next, make sure your screen is cleand and free of any debris or water. Apple then advises disconnecting any Lightning or USB-C accessories. 'If your screen works after removing an accessory, try using a different socket, cable or charger,' it said. Finally, remove any cases or screen protectors. If your screen still isn't working, you may need to set up a service for your device here.
