Ex-agent of Gareth Bale denies allegations of human trafficking, torture and rape in American court case
CAA allegedly assisted abuse but both parties deny all claims
Lawsuit casts shadow over decades-long football agency career
WHAT HAPPENED?
An unnamed woman, who has identified as Jane Doe in a complaint filed in California, accused Barnett of trafficking her from Australia to the United Kingdom in 2017, keeping her as a "sex slave" for six years, and raping her more than 39 times. The lawsuit also alleges that CAA helped facilitate Barnett's actions. Barnett and CAA have both categorically denied the claims.

The complaint describes "institutional abuse at the highest level," claiming Barnett "owned" the complainant and used threats, violence, and coercive control to silence her. It also alleges CAA knew or should have known what was happening and enabled the abuse. The court filing includes detailed claims of physical torture and financial control.
The complaint read: "This is a case about institutional abuse at the highest level. This case is about how one of the world's most powerful men in sports openly kept a sex slave for years, with the assistance of his employees, accountants, emissaries, and family members, and used his money and power to maintain coercive control over her and keep her in fear for her life and the lives of her children."

WHAT BARNETT AND CAA'S STATEMENT SAID
In a statement made on Thursday, Barnett said: "The claims made in today's complaint against me have no basis in reality and are untrue. We will vigorously defend this lawsuit through the appropriate legal process. I am looking forward to being entirely vindicated and exonerated."
CAA's statement read: "While the complaint attempts to connect these allegations to CAA's business, Ms. Doe has never been an employee, consultant, or contractor of CAA, ICM, or Stellar, nor has she ever had any business connection to CAA, ICM, or Stellar. CAA takes any allegations of this nature seriously, and through counsel, promptly urged Ms. Doe to contact law enforcement in the United Kingdom."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Barnett, who retired last year, was behind major transfers including Bale to Madrid. He sold his agency, Stellar Group, to ICM in 2020, which was later acquired by CAA in 2022. The lawsuit threatens to cast a long shadow over the agencies involved and their due diligence processes.

WHAT NEXT?
Barnett and CAA have 20 days to formally respond to the lawsuit in court. If the case proceeds, further evidence and testimony may be presented. The court process is expected to be lengthy and closely watched, given Barnett's high-profile status in global football.

Boston Celtics center Al Horford (42)Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports While Horford remains linked to Golden State, this new report about him remaining undecided could be good news for the Denver Nuggets, who are currently dealing with the potential fallout from the Jonas Valanciunas situation. Advertisement While Denver acquired Valanciunas from the Sacramento Kings, he reportedly wants to leave the NBA to go overseas to play for the Greek professional basketball team, Panathinaikos, which BasketNews' Donatas Urbonas first reported. Following the report that Horford remains undecided, Nuggets fans were ecstatic to find out they still have a chance. "Oh he's definitely a nugget," one wrote. "That means the nuggets still have a chance!" another proclaimed. "He's waiting on us," said one Nuggets fan. Heat Receive Major Update on Jonathan Kuminga Sweepstakes
Heat Receive Major Update on Jonathan Kuminga Sweepstakes originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the NBA offseason begins to spice up, with Free Agency set to officially begin on July 6th, the Miami Heat have yet to make a big splash. Advertisement According to a report from The Athletic's Anthony Slater, the Heat have received a significant update in their pursuit of Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. Slater's report highlights how Kuminga's restricted free agency remains unresolved after four days, with the Heat among several teams showing varying levels of interest. This development places the Heat in a competitive race alongside the Sacramento Kings, Washington Wizards, Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks and other teams currently pursuing Kuminga. Slater notes in his report that the Warriors have extended a $7.9 million qualifying offer to Kuminga, retaining the right to match any offer sheet. The Kings' proposal of Devin Carter, Dario Saric, and two second-round picks was rejected by the Warriors, signaling their extremely high valuation of Kuminga. The Heat, desperate to find talent to complement stars Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, have yet to make any blockbuster moves, with president Pat Riley being heavily criticized for his start to the offseason thus far. Despite the slow start, the Heat have made their final decision on trading Wiggins, a testament to Riley and the rest of the front office's decisiveness. Advertisement Kuminga, seeking a featured role, may find the Heat's competitive culture under head coach Erik Spoelstra appealing, though a return to the Warriors remains possible. With face-to-face meetings planned in Las Vegas during Summer League, the Heat have a window to make their pitch.
