Belmont Stakes payout: How much Sovereignty, Journalism and other horses won today. Purse details and more
Baeza was third to complete the repeat of the Kentucky Derby one-two-three.
With the win, Sovereignty claims a large share of the $2 million purse.
The 2025 Belmont Stakes offered a $2 million purse, matching 2024's increase from $1.5 million and equaling the Preakness but trailing the Kentucky Derby's $5 million. The purse was split among the top eight finishers, with 80% typically going to owners, 10% to trainers, and 10% to jockeys.
Owners (Godolphin): ~$960,000
Trainer (Bill Mott): ~$120,000
Jockey (Junior Alvarado): ~$120,000
Owners (Eclipse Thoroughbreds et al.): ~$288,000
Trainer (Michael McCarthy): ~$36,000
Jockey (Umberto Rispoli): ~$36,000
Rodriguez: $100,000
Crudo: $80,000
Uncaged: $60,000
Hill Road: $40,000
Heart of Honor: $20,000
Sovereignty, skipping the Preakness for rest, outran Journalism by three lengths in 2:00.69 on a fast track after morning rain dried. Longshots Rodriguez, Uncaged, and Crudo led early, but Sovereignty's late surge, echoing his Derby win, proved decisive.
Trainer Bill Mott's strategy to bypass the Preakness made Sovereignty the first horse to win the Derby and Belmont without running the Preakness. Journalism, running all three Triple Crown races, showed fatigue.
Sovereignty trainer Bill Mott said he was "on a cloud".
"The horse proved himself," McCarthy said. "The form held up -- the first three finishers in the Derby were one-two-three today, and I think it just was a great race."

Four-time Tour de France winner Pogacar - greatest cyclist of his generation
Tadej Pogacar is cycling's generational great and the Slovenian has silenced any remaining doubters that the sport has found its heir to the great Eddy Merckx. HT Image On his swaggering romp across France on his way to a fourth Tour de France title on Sunday, one could still catch glimpses of the boy desperate to beat his brother in the hills outside Ljubljana. But now Pogacar has also learned to curb some of his gung-ho instincts, which not only lifted him to success at times, but were also behind his rare defeats. In 2024 he won the Giro d'Italia, the Tour de France and the world title, a feat known as cycling's Triple Crown and won only by Merckx in 1974 and Stephen Roche in 1987. Pogacar's dominance of the current scene is without doubt, but the kangaroo courts of social media are asking another question, one that will forever dog cycling -- is Pogacar for real? Pogacar, a proven combative all-rounder capable of taking on mountain climbs as easily as flat sprints, has never tested positive at any time in his career. "I'm a good boy from a good family, taking no short cuts in life," he told AFP. He does indeed appear to be surrounded by a good family, a school teacher mother and a furniture designer father who live in the same village in the hills outside the Slovenian capital where he grew up. He shares a home with his fiance and fellow cyclist Urska Zigart in Monaco when their programmes allow, while his firm friend and off-season traing partner cyclist Michael Matthews of Australia is a near neighbour. "He hasn't changed, he's such a humble guy. He just wants to have fun and enjoy his riding," Matthews said. Pogacar is credited with having recreated that family spirit at his Team UAE, with whom he signed a 54-million-dollar six-year contract last November, according to Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport. Teammate Pavel Sivakov told AFP that Pogacar was easy to deal with and a constantly positive personality. "He's always super relaxed and easy to work with. Mentally he's always focused on the positives. We know he's always going to deliver whatever he can. He's humble and good for the atmosphere in the team," said Sivakov. While most agree there is something boyish about Pogacar, there are signs he has grown up. "This is my sixth Tour de France now, I miss the white jersey," he told reporters, referring to the jersey worn by the best-placed rider aged 26 and under. In taking on his great rival, the two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard, Pogacar has galvanised his team and forced them to control the peloton, leading to accusations of arrogance. "There's a difference between arrogance and trying to win a Tour de France," retorted the man who psyches himself up by listening to Slovenian rapper Drill. He still rides a bike with a sticker of the Incredible Hulk on it, joking: "He's the one you shouldn't make angry." Fellow Slovenian Matej Mohoric, himself a junior world champion and elite rider for the Bahrain Victorious team, said this week that Pogacar was a true great. "He was born with a machine inside him, and he was born with the brain to use that machine," Mohoric said. There will always be doubters, but during his victorious charge across France, Pogacar was already scanning the horizon for the next win. "Unlike a lot of cyclists I haven't booked any holidays, so maybe I'll race the Vuelta," he said of the Spanish Tour, which starts on August 23. He will also be in the Rwandan capital Kigali in September to defend the world road race title. dmc/lp/gj

Vikings give update on Justin Jefferson's hamstring injury as fantasy draft boards shift toward CeeDee Lamb
Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell on Friday (July 25) gave an update regarding wide receiver Justin Jefferson's recent hamstring strain. This development is bound to impact fantasy football rosters as well as he currently occupies the No. 2 receiver spot on the FantasyPros Average Draft Position following Ja'Marr Chase and just ahead of CeeDee Lamb. Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson (18) stands on the field during the team's NFL football training camp Wednesday, July 23, 2025, in Eagan, Minn.(AP) 'We did have a little bit of further evaluation done, and he [Justin Jefferson] does have a very mild left hamstring strain. We're going to be really cautious with it. It is not the same leg from a couple of years ago. I know that question. I credit Justin just for his ability to recognize how he was feeling and the fact that we were able to avoid anything major. We're going to hold him out here for a bit and then re-evaluate him next week,' O'Connell said in a press briefing. "I'm actually toying with the idea of putting Lamb as my WR1 over Chase. I'm debating it,' Dan Schneier said on the Fantasy Football Today podcast on Friday. The hosts managed to discuss three possible receiver picks who occupy top positions in the PPR. Ja'Marr Chase In 2024, Chase emerged as the Triple Crown winner with the most receptions (127), receiving yards (1,708), and receiving touchdowns (17). This made him join the ranks of Jerry Rice, Sterling Sharpe, Steve Smith, and Cooper Kupp. With an average of 23.7 PPR points per game, he is the first receiver in NFL history to go beyond both 1,700 receiving yards and 17 receiving touchdowns in a single season. CeeDee Lamb In 2023, Lamb averaged 23.7 PPR points per game as the No. 1 Fantasy receiver. He continued to average 17.6 PPR points per game the following season while dealing with a shoulder injury. Justin Jefferson In 2024, Justin Jefferson recorded 103 catches, 1,533 yards, and 10 touchdowns on 154 targets along with an average of 18.7 PPR points per game. He is also the all-time leader in yards per game at 96.5, followed by Chase with 87.5. Jefferson's injury could become a point of concern if it were to linger beyond next week. By Stuti Gupta

Cal Raleigh (Image Source: calraleigh_/Instagram) Cal Raleigh was on fire Tuesday in the 2025 MLB Home Run Derby at Truist Park in Atlanta, becoming the first catcher in history ever, and then the first switch-hitter to take the top prize. Famed for his monster power and regular contribution of big flies, Raleigh not only won the honour but a one-of-a-kind prize, a custom WWE Championship belt awarded by the former Undisputed WWE Champion himself, Cody Rhodes. Cody Rhodes surprises the crowd with a WWE moment Things got electric when "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes showed up after Raleigh's win. And in his iconic WWE gear, Rhodes walked out onto the field to give Raleigh a custom WWE Championship belt designed with MLB and Home Run Derby logos. It was an electrifying moment that combined the worlds of baseball and pro wrestling, getting the fans in the stadium and at home buzzing. The crossover celebration emphasized MLB's plans to combine sports and entertainment over All-Star Weekend. Raleigh, clearly choked up and thrilled, raised the belt high above his head as the cheers rang out around the ballpark. With 38 home runs, the Mariners slugger entered the event with the most homers in MLB at the All-Star break and proved the reason why he is among the most feared hitters in the game today. Raleigh narrowly edged past Brent Rooker in round one, deadlocked in the home run tiebreaker. The longest homer of the round got Raleigh ahead, but it was narrowly, just 0.08 feet farther than Rooker's best shot. He eased through the semifinals, taking out Oneil Cruz with 19 homers, then finished off the night with 18 homers in the finals to outslug 22-year-old Tampa Bay upstart Junior Caminero, who ended with 15. By hitting an impressive total of 54 home runs in all rounds combined, Raleigh not only took home the $1 million prize but also secured a spot in Derby history. The real family atmosphere continued, with Raleigh's father pitching to him and his brother caging in the earlier rounds — a heart-warming backdrop to all the power of the night.
