Banning Teens From YouTube Won't Keep Them Safe

Bloomberg4 hours ago
Keeping young people safe online is a rallying cry we can all get behind. But the furor in Australia over plans to ban children under 16 from social media shows it's not as simple as it sounds.
At the center of the latest debate over the rules set to come into effect later this year is Alphabet Inc.'s YouTube. Officials last week said they were reversing a promised exemption from the legislation for the video-sharing site. Part of the reason YouTube's inclusion has struck such a nerve is because it's impossible to overstate how intertwined it has become with pop culture for a generation who grew up on it.

Abbey Holmes responds to backlash after decision from new mum to return to work

Abbey Holmes has hit back at criticism she's returning to work too soon after giving birth to her first child in June. The popular Channel 7 presenter and former AFLW player has announced plans to return to the AFL's host broadcaster seven weeks after she and husband Keegan Brooksby welcomed their first child into the world. Holmes was inundated with messages of congratulations after announcing the rival of the couple's baby boy, Brax, on June 6. The much-loved TV personality shared the wonderful news by taking to social media to share a series of photos of their bundle of joy and a brief rundown of how labour went for the 34-year-old new mum. "My name is Braxton John Brooksby but my friends can call me Brax," Holmes wrote alongside a series of photos of the newborn. "Mummy labored all day on Friday, only for me to be born via C section at 5:49pm on [June 6] weighing 3.585kgs. My head was faaaar too large so we had to change our plans late in the piece!" However, the former AFLW star says she's been forced to defend herself against backlash from online trolls questioning her decision to return to work on Seven's AFL coverage less than two months after giving birth. Holmes is stepping back into her broadcasting roles with Channel Seven - albeit appearing just two days a week - as she tries to balance work and family life as a new mum. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Abbey Holmes (@abbeycholmes) Speaking exclusively to Holmes insists the decision to come back to work was not taken lightly, but has been made much easier by how well her baby boy is doing. 'I think that if he didn't take a bottle or was really unsettled and only slept on me, or whatever it might have been, then I certainly would have been hamstrung and certainly not come back seven weeks after having him,' she said. Abbey Holmes hits back at criticism of return-to-work call The popular TV presenter says the majority of messages she's received from fans have been highly supportive of her decision to return to work. But she admits there has been a 'small minority' of critics on social media who've questioned her parenting after suggesting that she should remain home to be with her baby. 'There's certainly a small minority of people out there that feel that they have the right to tell you what you should be doing and how things are to be done, which is never the case," Holmes added. The 34-year-old says she's also been irked by comments about her husband being on 'babysitting duty' after describing Brooksby as a 'super dad' and pointing out that parenting is typically a role shared by a mother and father. Holmes has spoken about how much she loves working with Seven on the AFL and sees no reason why she can't continue her career and be a mum at the same time. And her obstetrician, Dr Scott Shemer, told that as long as the baby is doing well and Holmes is physically and emotionally healthy, there isn't a recommended return-to-work timeframe for new mums to suggest she should remain home with the newborn. Holmes' return to Channel Seven comes after she was farewelled by her colleagues after the Brisbane and Adelaide game in June, right before baby Brax was born. 'Unfortunately for us this is your last Friday night footy and we have had to request an army to come in and take care of what you've done (for the team),' Seven colleague and AFL great Dale Thomas said at the time. 'On behalf of the Friday Night footy team, the entirety of Channel 7, and everybody around the football (industry), we just want to say we wish you all the very best. You're going to make the most amazing mother. We can't wait to see the little baby for you and Keegs (husband Keegan).'

Golden Retriever Becomes the Star of Grandma's Sleepover — Backpack and Hat Included (Exclusive)

Wally, a 4-year-old golden retriever, has become an internet favorite thanks to his big emotionsNEED TO KNOW Julia Moriggi, 34, and her fiancé got Wally, a golden retriever, when he was an 8-week-old puppy Now 4, Wally has become an internet favorite thanks to his big emotions — both joyful and heart-wrenching Recently, Moriggi shared a video of Wally arriving to a sleepover at his grandma's, which went viral and amassed over 7 million viewsWally, a 4-year-old golden retriever, has become an internet favorite thanks to his big emotions — both joyful and heart-wrenching. His mom, Julia Moriggi, 34, and her fiancé have had Wally since he was just an 8-week-old puppy. The couple has always loved golden retrievers, and in 2020, they decided to buy a house after their landlord told them they couldn't have a dog. Realizing life is short, they committed to doing whatever it took to make their dream of having a golden puppy come true. Since then, their lives have never been the same. Their world now revolves around Wally and they wouldn't have it any other way. They've even created a social media account for him on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, where hundreds of thousands of followers tune in to watch Wally share his big feelings through strikingly human-like facial expressions. 'He is a very special dog that has touched the lives of so many people,' Moriggi tells PEOPLE exclusively. 'He is extremely intelligent and intuitive, and we've caught him on camera seemingly fully understanding what we are saying. He is truly a one-of-a-kind dog." When Moriggi and her fiancé travel and Wally can't tag along, he stays with his beloved grandma and grandpa — Moriggi's parents. While he sometimes spends several days with them, his most recent visit was just an overnight stay. Before his latest sleepover, Moriggi packed Wally's little backpack with his favorite toys, food and treats. At her mom's house, she says Wally has his own bed, and grandma always goes the extra mile, making sure there's a new toy or treat waiting for him when he arrives. 'They're the only ones who watch him, and they get so excited when he comes to visit,' Moriggi says. 'They truly treat him like their grandchild.' 'He is obsessed with her,' the product analyst and creator adds. 'Whenever he sees her, he absolutely loses his mind. He loves her so much, but I think she might love him even more. She'll literally pet him for hours, so he knows when he sees her, he's about to get a lot of love (and snacks).' After getting Wally's things ready, Moriggi loaded him into the car and headed off to her parents' house, about an hour away from their home in Boston. As the family got closer, she says Wally smelled where they were going and started bouncing around in the backseat, eager to get out. Once they arrived and parked, Moriggi got Wally out of the car and dressed him in his little backpack and hat, hoping to to surprise grandma with how cute he looked. As they made their way to the door, Moriggi pulled out her phone and began filming the moment. The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! 'When grandma opened the door, he ran inside, said hi to grandpa, and immediately found the present waiting for him,' Moriggi recalls. 'He knew exactly where to look because she always has one waiting. He grabbed the whole bag and ran around showing it off to everyone, which was the best part of the video. It's a ritual every time we visit or she comes to our house.' "The hat and backpack started falling off as he got more and more excited,' she says. 'It made the video a little chaotic and so funny.' Later, Moriggi shared the sweet moment online, where it quickly went viral, racking up 7.7 million views and 3,700 comments as of Monday, Aug. 4. What's your sign? "The backpack and bucket hat 😭 he's the cutest little toddler omg," another wrote. Someone else said, "He's so happy he literally doesn't know what to do with himself ☺️🤗." For the dog mom, it's always exciting when a video goes viral, especially when it features Wally and his grandma. Although the duo has had a few viral moments together, Moriggi says her mom still finds it 'so crazy' and is amazed when people recognize her. 'A lot of people say the video made them smile when they were having a bad day, was the perfect start to their morning, or the best thing they saw on the internet today,' Moriggi says. 'People also share that Wally reminds them of their dogs who have passed away, and they include a little story about them. These comments always bring me to tears.' "Another comment that kept showing up on this video was, 'This is how all animals deserve to be treated and loved,' and that one really hit because it is so true,' Moriggi adds. 'People were also saying they want to be Wally, or come back in their next life as him. They also wondered if they could be adopted into our family or go visit grandma themselves, which always makes us laugh." Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword
