Rain, storms expected in Delhi as IMD warns of gusty winds, lightning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Sunday, forecasting generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms. These are expected to be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, occasionally reaching up to 50 kmph during storms.
According to IMD, a yellow alert suggests the possibility of moderate rainfall. While not severe, it might cause localised flooding in low-lying areas or disrupt outdoor activities.
The showers are likely to bring down the maximum temperature, keeping it between 33–35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to hover around 29 degrees Celsius.
Delhi weather: Weekly forecast
Delhi is expected to experience mostly cloudy skies from June 29 to July 4, with the IMD issuing a yellow alert for June 29 and 30. Thunderstorms, lightning and light to very light rainfall have been forecast through July 2. Evening or night-time storms may bring gusty winds ranging from 30–40 kmph, with occasional peaks of 50 kmph. Rainfall intensity is likely to vary, but no heatwave conditions are expected during the week.
Showers in parts of Delhi, but monsoon onset yet to be declared
Several parts of the national capital, particularly southwest and south Delhi, along with adjoining areas of western Uttar Pradesh and NCR cities such as Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad, received rainfall on Saturday. However, the IMD stopped short of declaring the onset of the southwest monsoon. It stated that conditions were now favourable for its advancement.
Weather experts noted that a significant portion of Delhi had yet to receive rainfall. Several areas, including the city's main observatory at Safdarjung, remained dry. Showers were reported in localities such as Mayur Vihar, Palam, Ayanagar and Zafarpur, even as overcast skies lingered across the city.
Delhi pollution: Air quality remains 'satisfactory'
Delhi's air quality improved on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) entering the 'satisfactory' category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI was recorded at 85 at 7 am on June 29, down slightly from 86 at the same time a day earlier.
An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51–100 'satisfactory', 101–200 'moderate', 201–300 'poor', 301–400 'very poor' and 401–500 'severe'.

A cloudburst in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district early Sunday killed two construction workers and left seven others missing, as the monsoon covered the entire country nearly a week ahead of schedule, triggering landslides and flash floods across northern and eastern India. The seasonal rains reached Delhi on June 29 — two days later than usual — but advanced quickly across Rajasthan, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall on June 30 across several Uttarakhand districts, including Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar and Nainital. In response, authorities have temporarily halted the Char Dham Yatra for the safety of pilgrims. A red alert and orange alert has also been sounded in several districts of Himachal Pradesh. Officials said a landslide, triggered by the cloudburst, swept away the temporary shelters of 29 workers building a hotel along the Yamunotri National Highway. About 10 metres of the highway was also washed away. Twenty workers were rescued, while nine were reported missing. By Sunday morning, the bodies of two missing workers — believed to be of Nepalese origin — were recovered from the Yamuna riverbanks, 18km downstream from the site. Search and rescue operations, involving NDRF, SDRF, and police personnel, are ongoing. 'The highway remains blocked due to debris. Pilgrims returning from Yamunotri have been asked to stay at safe locations,' said Uttarkashi district magistrate Prashant Arya. Rain havoc in Himachal In neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, where monsoon arrived on June 20, rain-related incidents have claimed 20 lives so far. 'Three fatalities due to rain-related incidents were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll since the onset of monsoon in the state to 20. One person each drowned in Una and Bilaspur districts, while another died after falling from height in Shimla district, according to the state emergency operation centre (SEOC). In its revised warning issued on Sunday evening, the Met office said: 'heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur at a few places in the districts of Kangra, Mandi, Solan and Sirmaur, isolated places in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Shimla districts and heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Kullu and Chamba districts till Monday evening'. Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed deputy commissioners of Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Solan districts to order a closure of schools on June 30. Landslides block Shimla-Kalka rail line Landslides disrupted services on the UNESCO heritage Shimla-Kalka rail line after debris and trees fell on the tracks in Solan. All five spillway gates of the Pandoh Dam were opened Sunday, increasing water levels in the Beas river. Authorities have warned residents to avoid riverbanks. In East Singhbhum district, 162 students were rescued from a flooded private residential school in Kowali after heavy rains submerged the premises. Connectivity restored in Northeast In the Northeast, rail connectivity to Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and southern Assam was partially restored six days after it was disrupted by landslides in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section. Limited train operations have resumed, and full restoration is expected by Monday. Vital for agriculture The monsoon is critical for India's agriculture sector, which supports over 42% of the population and contributes more than 18% to the national GDP. 'Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for the next 24 hours in view of the heavy rain alert. Instructions have been given to the police and administration officials to stop the pilgrims in Haridwar,' ANI quoted Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey as saying. It is important to note that those pilgrims who have arrived in Rishikesh will not be allowed to go anywhere while others on the route are being escorted to safe locations until weather conditions improve. Cloudburst in Uttarakhand: To recall, eight to nine workers went missing at an under-construction hotel site in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi after a cloudburst. According to an ANI report quoting Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya, the cloudburst has caused damage to the Barkot-Yamunotri Marg. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami's Statement: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in a post on X said, 'In the tragic incident of a landslide in the Silai Band area of Barkot Tehsil, Uttarkashi district, it has been reported that some workers are missing.' Giving information about ongoing search and rescue efforts, he stated, 'Teams including SDRF, NDRF, and others have reached the site and are engaged in intensive relief and rescue operations. I am in constant contact with the concerned authorities regarding this matter. I pray to God for everyone's safety.'

Heatwave Leaves Moroccan Cities Sweltering In Record-Breaking Temperatures
Morocco: Monthly temperature records have been broken across Morocco, sometimes topping seasonal norms by as much as 20 degrees Celsius, the national meteorological office said Sunday, as the North African kingdom was gripped by a heatwave. "Our country has experienced, between Friday 27 and Saturday 28 of June, a 'chegui' type heatwave characterised by its intensity and geographical reach," the meteorological office (DGM) said in a report shared with AFP. The heatwave, which has also struck across the Strait of Gibraltar in southern Europe, has affected numerous regions in Morocco. According to the DGM, the most significant temperature anomalies have been on the Atlantic plains and interior plateaus. In the coastal city of Casablanca, the mercury reached 39.5C (103 Fahrenheit), breaching the previous record of 38.6C set in June 2011. In Larache, 250 kilometres (150 miles) up the coast, a peak temperature of 43.8C was recorded, 0.9C above the previous June high, set in 2017. And in central Morocco's Ben Guerir, the thermometers hit 46.4C, besting the two-year-old record by 1.1C. In total, more than 17 regions sweltered under temperatures above 40C, the DGM said, with Atlantic areas bearing the brunt. "Coastal cities like Essaouira recorded temperatures 10C or 20C above their usual averages" for June, the DGM said. Inland cities such as Marrakesh, Fez, Meknes and Beni Mellal experienced heat 8C to 15C above the norm, with Tangier in the far north at the bottom end of that scale. The forecast for the days ahead indicates continuing heat in the interior of Morocco due to a so-called Saharan thermal depression, an intense dome of heat over the desert.
