Tengku Zafrul: 19pc US tariff a win for Malaysia, no compromise on sovereignty
Tengku Zafrul emphasised that Malaysia had stood firm on various 'red line' items, and the 19 per cent tariff rate was secured without compromising the nation's sovereign right to implement key policies supporting socio-economic stability and growth.
'This positive outcome follows sustained engagement between both governments through various bilateral platforms and reflects the high degree of Malaysia–US complementarity in trade and investment for over 60 years,' he said in a statement.
He also noted that the reduced rate is broadly in line with other Southeast Asian countries.
The Malaysia–US tariff negotiations started on May 6 and concluded on July 31, 2025. — Bernama

Citaglobal acquires 12.8% stake in Mutiara Perlis
PETALING JAYA: Citaglobal Bhd has proposed to acquire a 12.8% indirect stake in Mutiara Perlis Sdn Bhd, the master developer of the Perlis Maritime Corridor (PMC), a US$6.5bil (RM27.8bil) logistics infrastructure project. The acquisition involves purchasing a 20% stake in Manjaran Sdn Bhd for RM40mil from Dedap Rimbun Sdn Bhd, satisfied through issuing 42.11 million new Citaglobal shares at 95 sen each. Dedap Rimbun will continue to hold 80% of Manjaran post-completion of the acquisition by Citaglobal. The PMC includes the Perlis Inland Port (PIP), Perlis Sanglang Port and Perlis Power Hub. The PIP, located 4.7km from the Malaysia-Thailand border in Padang Besar, is set to replace the overloaded Padang Besar Container Terminal. It will start operations in September 2025, offering increased container capacity and services such as warehousing for the halal, automotive and rubber industries. The Perlis Power Hub, meanwhile, will supply up to 5GW of electricity to Northern Malaysia and Southern Thailand, while the Sanglang Port will feature a bulk cargo terminal and a supply base for vessels and oil and gas operations. Citaglobal's involvement in the PMC began in August 2022, when its subsidiary, Citaglobal Land Sdn Bhd, was appointed as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for PIP's Phase 1, valued at RM573.5mil. The federal government, through the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority, has invested nearly RM400mil in external infrastructure for the PIP, which aligns with the 12th Malaysia Plan and Northern Corridor Economic Region development plans. Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, executive chairman and president of Citaglobal, said: 'Our involvement and investment in the PMC aligns with our broader vision to emerge as one of Malaysia's leading players in infrastructure development and energy transition.' He noted that the completed Phase 1 of PIP and its upcoming operations could contribute to Citaglobal's revenue, with potential for future valuation gains as PMC assets mature. Datuk Shabaruddin Ibrahim, group executive chairman of Mutiara Perlis, said: 'We welcome Citaglobal into the Perlis Maritime Corridor family, and are excited to work together. 'We have a shared vision of developing the local economy of Perlis, improving social wellbeing while also strengthening Malaysia's regional logistical reach in Asia.' Mutiara Perlis is a joint venture, with Mutiara Infra holding an 80% stake and the Perlis State Government, via Menteri Besar Incorporated, holding 20%. Citaglobal, a public-listed company, operates in clean energy, civil engineering, telecommunications and manufacturing, with additional ventures in waste-to-energy and clean energy collaborations globally.

Muhyiddin denies defending subsidies for foreigners
PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said the coalition's fundamental policy on subsidies has always been that they should be for Malaysians, not foreigners. PETALING JAYA : Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has denied defending the distribution of government subsidies to foreigners, urging Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to furnish proof he had ever made such a statement. In a video posted on Facebook, Muhyiddin said Anwar's claim that he had made such a remark was slanderous. 'I have never said such a thing. From the beginning, our fundamental policy on subsidies has been that they are meant for Malaysians, not foreigners. 'I want to ask where Anwar read or heard that (purported statement), because there's definitely none. 'What was the source, and was it genuine or fake?' asked the Bersatu president. Earlier today, Sinar Harian quoted Anwar as saying that Muhyiddin had questioned the government for burdening foreigners when they had also made significant contributions to the country. The prime minister said the government had decided on targeted subsidies for electricity and RON95 petrol so that they could continue helping Malaysians while reducing the nation's fiscal deficit.

Southeast Asia Youth Join Global Innovation Movement at Xiamen University Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Media OutReach Newswire - 5 August 2025 - The final competition and award ceremony of the Southeast Asia Division Contest of China International College Students' Innovation Competition (SEA-CICSIC) 2025 and Malaysia-China Youth Innovation Competition (MCYIC) 2025 concluded successfully at Xiamen University Malaysia on 20 July 2025, bringing together young innovators from all over the Southeast Asia region to present and compete with their innovation ideas and projects. With the Ministry of Education of China as the main organiser and Xiamen University China and Xiamen University Malaysia as co-organisers, the competition attracted over 1,200 students from 10 Southeast Asian countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), with projects covering topics such as sustainable technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and social entrepreneurship. Ultimately, 50 teams from 7 countries received awards, including 10 First Prize Awards, 15 Second Prize Awards, and 25 Third Prize Awards. These winning teams represented Xiamen University Malaysia, University of Malaya, Sampoerna University, the National University of Singapore, Cambodia University of Technology and Science (CamTech), and various universities across the region. The outstanding projects will be recommended for participation in the 2025 China International College Students' Innovation Competition finals.
