The story sees the titular character investigate a headless body found in a rural Vietnamese village during the Nguyen Dynasty. As supernatural elements emerge, he faces chilling twists, transporting the audience into a world of mystery, horror and thriller. Quoc Huy, Dinh Ngoc Diep, Tran Quoc Anh, Doan Minh Anh and My Uyen star.
Detective Kien opened locally on April 30, amassing 150 billion VND (approximately $5.8M) in just eight days at the box office. It currently sits at 239 billion VND (approximately $9.2M), and is still playing. Producers are Galaxy Studio and November Films.
The film is on track to become Vietnam's 2nd highest grossing film of the year, and is already the 8th biggest of all time overall in its home country. This is Vu's 18th feature in a 20-year career that has balanced critical acclaim and commercial success. Vu is internationally known for Mat Biec (Dreamy Eyes) and Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass, which were Vietnam's official entries for the International Feature Film Oscar at the 93rd and 89th Academy Awards.
Vu tells us,'One of my greatest passions is to explore Vietnam's culture and the distinct beauty of the country through my films, no matter what genre I'm working in. Detective Kien is special because it offers audiences a glimpse into Vietnam's past. The movie was shot in villages and homes that are 200 years old. Considerable attention was given to the production design, costumes, props and locations – to offer the most realistic portrayal of Vietnamese society during the Nguyen dynasty. I want to share this world that we recreated with international audiences, with the hope that they will gain a better understanding of the rich tapestry of traditions, customs and beliefs that characterize the unique culture of Vietnam.'
Thien A. Pham, founder of 3388 Films, added, '3388 Films prioritizes and advocates for the theatrical experience because we believe audiences love, and want, to watch films on the big screen, in cinemas together with family and friends. This is why our team has been boots on the ground the past few years, diligently carving theatrical distribution pathways for Asian, specifically Southeast Asian films, in multiple territories around the world. Moviegoing, even with all the recent industry challenges, remains an unrivaled magical experience that sparks imagination, creates wonder, and fulfills our human need for social connections. And without a doubt, Victor Vu's films are meant to be experienced by audiences on the silver screen.'

Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman says Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards will "lead the Avengers", and let's spare a thought for Sam Wilson
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman has just revealed who will be leading the Avengers in Avengers: Doomsday. While speaking to Variety on the challenges of casting Reed Richards – a role that ultimately went to Pedro Pascal – Shakman said, "He goes from being the nerdy scientist who's locked away in the lab, to the husband and the father who'd do anything to protect his family, to the guy who's leading the Avengers." Given Marvel's proclivity for keeping pretty much every story beat and spoiler under wraps, this certainly could be seen as a slip of the tongue on Shakman's part. Right now, all we know about the makeup of the Avengers comes from the tease found at the end of the Thunderbolts post-credits scene. There, the newly-christened 'New Avengers' (Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, Yelena, Bob/Sentry, Ghost, and John Walker) are in a legal battle with Sam Wilson's Avengers over the rights to the name. They're also monitoring interstellar activity, which is when Fantastic Four's ship arrives on the scene (though Marvel boss Kevin Feige's comments about what it may or may not be have only muddied the waters). Now, it appears Mr. Fantastic will be leading the way for Earth's Mightiest Heroes as they remain on track for a showdown with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. Speaking to GamesRadar+, Shakman also let us in on another sliver of story information – Galactus will be on a "collision course" with Reed and Sue's child, Franklin. "What was so charming about this movie is it's about the tiniest, youngest thing in the world and the oldest, biggest thing in the universe," Shakman teased. Fantastic Four, starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach hits cinemas on July 25. Check out San Francisco's newest escape room and speakeasy
Inside an unassuming storefront with a discreet "Puzzle Shop" sign on 16th Street in the Mission, you'll find Lore, a speakeasy and escape room bringing an "Alice in Wonderland"-inspired immersive experience. How it works: Guests have one hour and 40 minutes to solve a series of puzzles in numerous rooms, filled with interactive games and live actors. A flight of three cocktails or mocktails is included. Visitors can also skip the escape room and head straight to the speakeasy, which serves Asian fusion dishes and cocktails inspired by dishes like Korean cold noodles and Vietnamese phở. Zoom in: After spending her life savings on opening Lore, founder and owner Vy Tran took to Reddit to share her journey on becoming a first-time business owner. She initially "braced for the worst," but acknowledged the process has been "surprisingly good." she wrote. What they're saying: "It just seemed like a really good time to build something six months ago, when I heard about all these programs that San Francisco was doing to fill their vacant storefronts," Tran tells Axios. The intrigue: Tran said the city was also missing a "cool, New York-style cocktail bar."

THUNDERBOLTS* Director Describes Seeing His Cast on AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Set and Talks About the Team's New Leader — GeekTyrant
Thunderbolts* was a huge hit at the box office. Fans loved this motley crew and their banter amid the action and the heart the story delivered. We are about to see the film's home release, and director Jake Schreier chatted with ComicBook about the movie to celebrate. One point he touched on was how surreal it was to finish his movie, and see his cast in the set of Avengers: Doomsday , filming the post-credits scene under the direction of the Russo brothers. The Russo Bros. are at the helm of both Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars , and Schreier says Yelena Belova star Florence Pugh described perfectly what it was like for Schreier to watch the Thunderbolts cast film that key scene on the Doomsday set. 'Florence joked, because I was there when they did the post-credits scene, but I was just on set in the background. She said it was like being dropped off at school by your parent and turning over your shoulder to wave goodbye. 'Do well! Study!' No, look, the thing is, all of, almost all of these characters were created before I came along, and I think that's just part of the way these worlds work, and the Russos have done such incredible work in this space.' Schreier went on to say: 'I think it's fun for me because those movies have a different tone, and there is a different context to them. The goal was to see if we could take these characters from where they were in our new versions of them, and if we could bring them to a point where, again, even if it seems odd at first, if you squint, you're like, 'Well, maybe this could work, or maybe it can't.' 'We're not saying that this is going to go smoothly. The fun is watching what on earth is going to happen with that going forward. For me it was fun that day just being on that set where, as big as our movie was, it's a big movie for me, but there is this even bigger context to this world and all the other characters that are in it. 'To see those characters now in that context, there was a lot of fun to that, and it felt different in a way that it should feel different. So I'm just excited to see what happens. Yeah.' Now that the Thunderbolts are officially the New Avengers, and are interacting more with the rest of the MCU thanks to Doomsday, Schreier was asked who he thinks could be the leader of the New Avengers if he had to guess. He seemed to say what most people are probably thinking: 'I think what's fun with them is that everyone could realistically imagine that they are the leader, and I think that watching that kind of dynamic play out…Obviously it would make a lot of sense for it to be Bucky, but it's not a role that he's necessarily been comfortable with. ''I think that any one of them could imagine that it ought to be them, and they all bring something to that, but I have no insight whatsoever into what happens, and I think getting to watch the way all of those characters will play against each other will be really fun.' Thunderbolts* is available on Digital now and will be released on 4K and Blu-ray on July 29.
