Software-defined vehicles are becoming the norm, allowing automakers to roll out new features and make remote updates without inconveniencing owners. While the trend is likely exciting for early adopters and tech enthusiasts, it poses a real problem for people who simply want a vehicle that works. One owner is taking an automaker to court over his frustrations.
Canadian Volvo EX90 owner Vicken Kanadjian created a website to document the problems he's had with the EX90, and he's started the legal process to seek a refund from Volvo Canada. Kanadjian said he had been a happy Volvo owner before the EX90, noting that his 2019 XC90 had been "a great car that he wished he never sold back to the dealership."

His problems began within a few days of delivery, when the keys, including the digital key, stopped working, leaving the Volvo app as the only way to unlock the vehicle. A software update in April made the situation worse, with Kanadjian saying that, "The main center screen became completely non-functional, recurrent issues with door locking/unlocking, emergency stop triggered due to system fault, AC and ventilation system became inoperable for one week."
If that isn't enough to make you happy about driving an older car, Kanadjian said the SUV's infotainment screen regularly blacks out and becomes "completely non-functional." Not a huge deal if you're trying to change a radio station, but it could become a significant problem when the backup camera is in use or the driver is using navigation directions.
While he escalated the problem beyond the dealership level and filed a lawsuit, he was still stuck with the EX90 as of mid-June. Kanadjian also filed a complaint with Transport Canada and is seeking a buyback from Volvo, but the automaker has so far rebuffed his efforts, saying, "Volvo Cars is not in the position to replace or repurchase the vehicle. We ask that you allow your retailer the opportunity to diagnose and complete all required repairs."

Trump's tariff deal offers scant relief for Japan automakers as bigger threat looms

Japanese automakers may have sidestepped crushing U.S. tariffs, but the reprieve is offering little comfort as Chinese automakers erode their long-held global edge, complicated by persistent structural challenges at home. On July 22, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that auto tariffs on Japan-made vehicle imports to the U.S. were lowered to 15% from the current 25%. However, the light isn't at the end of the tunnel just yet, industry experts cautioned. "The trade deal struck with the U.S. is certainly a relief in that it offers some certainty that U.S. tariffs on Japan-made cars won't rise to punitive levels," said Stefan Angrick, head of Japan and Frontier market economics at Moody's Analytics. "But I'd hesitate to call it good news. A 15% U.S. import tariff is still significantly higher than where Japan started. And a 15% tariff is certainly a higher rate than most had expected." The larger challenge, analysts say, comes from China's meteoric rise in the global automotive industry. Once an important growth market for Japanese brands, China has transformed into a dominant competitor. A key challenge for Japanese producers is the intensifying competition from China, Angrick said. China's push into advanced manufacturing has transformed it into a formidable competitor just as domestic demand for Japan-made cars began to soften, he added. Seconding his view is Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars, who noted that lower-cost Chinese vehicles remain the "single biggest threat" to Japan's auto industry and economic outlook. China is the world's largest car producer and exporter, particularly of electric vehicles. The country's growing dominance in critical components and EV innovation is increasingly squeezing foreign automakers. Chinese automakers have also been making significant inroads into Southeast Asia — a region long dominated by Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda, and Nissan — making it an uphill battle for Japanese automakers to maintain their once-unassailable global market share. According to a 2025 report by PwC, the market share of Japanese auto manufacturers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore, commonly referred to as ASEAN-6, fell from 68.2% in 2023 to 63.9% in 2024. "[China autos] are expanding into markets where Japanese firms used to have a strong foothold. Thailand is one example," said the Moody's Analytics' expert. Beyond Southeast Asia, Japan's second-largest car export market is also being contested by China: Australia. A recent study commissioned by the Australian Automotive Dealer Association predicts that China is poised to surpass other countries as Australia's leading source of vehicle imports within the next decade. By 2035, 43% of all imported vehicles in Australia are expected to be manufactured in China, up from the expected 17% in 2025, the report suggested. By contrast, Japanese imports are expected to fall from 32% in 2025 to 22% by 2035. Besides external competition, Japan's automotive sector is contending with domestic economic challenges, including high inflation and weak consumer spending — similar to other developed large automakers like Toyota continue to find success domestically, Nissan is especially vulnerable due to the growing threat from China's automotive industry, Brauer explained. Earlier missteps by the management and planned plant closures are compounding its woes. Nissan plans to shut down seven of its 17 plants by fiscal 2027 and reduce its global workforce by around 15% as part of a restructuring plan. "All in all, the outlook for Japan's car industry is very challenging," Moody's Angrick said. While Toyota's global scale and diversified manufacturing footprint give it a relative advantage in maneuvering said challenges, smaller automakers such as Subaru and Mazda are under more pressure, noted Mio Kato, founder of Lightstream Research. While Subaru and Mazda do face a "significantly higher burden," they do have an advantage in having strong ties to Toyota, said Kato. Mazada, for one, shares a joint plant with Toyota, while Subaru is teaming up with Toyota to manufacture a co-developed electric vehicle slated for a 2026 debut. In the long term, Kato believes that these partnerships could deepen, potentially leading to a more formal consolidation under Toyota's umbrella. "I wouldn't expect [a consolidation] to happen on a short-term timeframe. However, it is certainly something for them to consider when you start looking towards the end of the decade, perhaps," he said. Still, analysts acknowledge that Trump's finalized tariff rate brings at least one benefit: some predictability. While it is still too soon to fully infer the long-term impact of the new trade agreement between the U.S. and Japan, having a confirmed tariff agreement will allow Japanese automakers to know their pricing and cost structures going forward, experts echoed. However, it remains unclear what tariff rates other automakers will face. "I think the absolute case for Japan is now understood relatively well, but in terms of how their competitiveness shifts, versus say, autos manufactured in Korea and exported or from Mexico and Canada, that could still impact the profit outlook for Japanese auto companies," Kato said.

Toyota unveiled the all-new RAV4 and Mazda finally showed us the all-new CX-5. We've already compared these two, but the RAV4's biggest competitor on the sales charts doesn't come from Mazda—it comes from Honda with the CR-V. Ahead of the RAV4's arrival, let's take a look at the most significant differences between it and the CR-V.1. Many buyers appreciate neat, inoffensive styling, and the latest CR-V looks good without being polarizing in any way. Models like the Sport Hybrid and TrailSport Hybrid do appeal more with their larger wheels and sportier details, though. Toyota has taken a bolder approach with the RAV4. Its wraparound headlights and tall hood look aggressive, while options like a black roof and more visual distinction between the trims work well. The GR Sport, for instance, gets a functional Matrix grille and front/rear wing-type spoilers. At 184.8 inches in length, the CR-V is longer than the RAV4 (up to 181.8 inches), although the top RAV4 trims are marginally wider and most are taller than the Honda. RAV4 Goes Hybrid-Only, Honda Still Offers Gas-Only Power Perhaps the biggest difference between the two is that the CR-V still comes with a non-hybrid powertrain as standard. It's a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque, and it directs power to the front or all four wheels. Above this is a CR-V Hybrid with 204 hp combined and an EPA rating of up to 40 mpg combined. The RAV4 range now starts with a conventional hybrid using a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It produces 226 hp with FWD or 236 hp with AWD, so it's comfortably more powerful than the base CR-V. The big news is the upgraded plug-in hybrid RAV4, which also uses a 2.5-liter four-pot but now makes 320 hp. Not only is the RAV4 PHEV quicker than any CR-V, but it can be driven for up to 50 miles on electric power alone. In terms of performance, it looks like an easy win for the 2026 RAV4. 3. Only The CR-V Has A Plug-In Hydrogen Model View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article The CR-V does have one trick up its sleeve and it comes in the form of the e:FCEV derivative, or what Honda calls America's first plug-in hydrogen fuel cell EV. This CR-V is equipped with an electric motor producing 174 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque. It has a much smaller battery than a normal EV at 17.1 kWh, but that's because there are two hydrogen tanks, giving this CR-V a range of up to 270 miles. It also takes very little time to refill the hydrogen tanks, a distinct advantage over a normal EV. Unfortunately, the CR-V e:FCEV is only sold in California, and while it's a great showcase for hydrogen powertrains, it's not available widely enough to give the CR-V range a significant advantage over the RAV4, which has no equivalent powertrain. 4. The RAV4 Can Tow More If you need to do any serious towing, you'll need a pickup truck or a bigger SUV. However, there's a clear leader here in terms of towing. The CR-V can tow up to 1,000 lbs in hybrid guise or 1,500 lbs for the non-hybrid model. For all RAV4 FWD variants and the LE AWD, the towing capacity is 1,750 lbs. On several AWD models, that rises significantly to 3,500 lbs. Items like pop-up campers, single-horse trailers, and larger U-Haul trailers will all benefit from the superior towing capacity of the Toyota. 5. Whether you're after efficient electric-only driving, maximum performance, or decent towing, the RAV4 leads in all areas. Toyota has also given the RAV4 an attractive design update, inside and out, and it includes a rugged Woodland trim to match the CR-V TrailSport. Not reflected in this on-paper comparison are the CR-V's excellent road manners and spacious cabin, but we can only cast judgment on how they match up once the RAV4 arrives. Pricing will also play a crucial role, but we don't know how much the 2026 RAV4 will cost yet, and the Honda starts at $30,920.
