Guardiola hits back at Klopp over FIFA Club World Cup criticism: ‘Teams complain because they're not here'
The tournament is under heavy scrutiny from around the world, with many teams and managers calling it a joke and not a football due to various reasons. Leading the criticism was Klopp, calling it the worst idea ever implemented in football. Klopp said the FIFA Club World Cup would put more strain on an already packed calendar for the players.
The Spanish manager of City, Guardiola, said he understands the viewpoint of his old competitor Klopp, who is now head of global football for Red Bull, who had a team involved in the tournament in Salzburg, yet he suggested people complaining might be jealous.
'I fought a lot with Jurgen many, many times. I know where his idea comes from. I respect him, I would defend his argument as well. At the same time, as managers, we are in a job. We don't organise the competitions,' said Guardiola in a press conference ahead of their Round of 16 match against Al Hilal.
'Once we are here, we are proud. Many, many teams complain about these competitions because they are not here, otherwise they might love being here,' Guardiola added.
The new Club World Cup is a supersized version of what used to be a short tournament with only seven teams. The new edition includes 32 teams from around the world and will be held every four years. As its name suggests, it's envisioned to be a club version of the World Cup for national teams.
'It's a pointless competition. Whoever wins it will be the worst winner of all time because they'll have played all summer and then gone straight back into the league. There are people who have never been involved in the day-to-day business of football and are now coming up with ideas,' Klopp had said to the German newspaper Die Welt a few days back.

Bristol, Jul 2 (PTI) Indian juggernaut in the white-ball tour continued as Amanjot Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues hit radiant fifties to propel the visitors to a commanding 24-run win over England in the second T20 International here. Tuesday night's win handed Harmanpreet Kaur's side a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, having won the opener by a record-shattering 97-run margin last week. Amanjot (63 not out off 40 balls), who scored her maiden T20I fifty, and Rodrigues (63 off 41 deliveries) posted a formidable 181 for 4 after being asked to bat. After a shaky start, the elegant Rodrigues, who scored nine boundaries and a six, and spirited Amanjot not only resurrected India from 31 for 3 with 93-run stand for the fourth wicket but also laid the foundation for a towering 181 for 4, hitting a flurry of boundaries. Rodrigues eventually perished in the 15th over, caught by Sophia Dunkley off Lauren Bell, but Amanjot marched on. But, left arm-spinner Shree Charani (2/28) caught Jones off her own bowling in the 15th over to thwart all hopes for an England win. Sophie Ecclestone (35) hit some boundaries but it was not enough. "It's new Indian team. Wherever we play, home or away, we are ready to dominate. That was our plan and we did that today," said Amanjot who was adjudged player of match for his 63 with the bat and one wicket with the ball.

Atletico Madrid signs young Italian left back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta
Atletico Madrid signed Italian left-back Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta on Tuesday. The 22-year-old defender will arrive on a five-year contract, Atletico said. Financial details of the transfer were not immediately disclosed. Ruggeri came through Atalanta's youth system and made his first-team debut as an 18-year-old in a Champions League match against Liverpool in 2020. Atletico said Ruggeri is a left back 'with good crossing ability and great stamina.' He spent the 2021-22 season on loan at Salernitana and returned to Atalanta the following season to establish himself as an important piece for coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Ruggeri was included in UEFA's Europa League Team of the Season in 2023-24.
