Uttarakhand: Helicopter carrying 7 people crashes near Gaurikund

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 15 (ANI): A helicopter carrying seven people on board and which was on its way to Gaurikund in Uttarakhand crashed on Sunday morning, Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) said.
The incident took place at around 5:20 am when the chopper, with six passengers- five adults and one child and the pilot, which was going from Shri Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi, crashed near Gaurikund.
Inspector General (Garhwal Range) Rajiv Swaroop said that the site of the crash was a very remote area
Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have rushed to the spot, he said
According to UCADA, the passengers in the helicopter hail from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami posted on X, 'Very sad news has been received about a helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district. SDRF, local administration and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety of all the travellers.'

Centre issues Model Rules to States, UTs to aid ease of doing business in agroforestry
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has issued the 'Model Rules for Felling of Trees in Agricultural Lands', with the objective of supporting States and Union Territories in simplifying regulatory frameworks and promoting agroforestry. Agroforestry offers multiple benefits, including enhancing rural livelihoods, improving soil health, conserving biodiversity, increasing tree cover, water conservation, contributing to climate resilience, and reducing pressure on natural forests. According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Model Rules aim to establish a streamlined regulatory framework by providing simplified procedures for registering agroforestry lands and managing tree harvesting and transit. The initiative is expected to encourage greater participation and open up opportunities for farmers and other stakeholders to adopt agroforestry practices. The model rules are designed to support the ease of doing business for those involved in tree-based farming systems. By promoting domestic timber production through agroforestry, the approach seeks to close the demand-supply gap, support wood-based industries with locally sourced raw materials and boost exports. The State Level Committee established under the Wood-Based Industries (Establishment and Regulation) Guidelines, 2016, will also be responsible for implementing these model rules. Its role will be to guide the States and Union Territories on promoting agroforestry and enhancing timber production from farmlands by easing regulations related to tree harvesting and timber transportation, particularly for commercially valuable species. The committee will empanel agencies for verifying applications for the felling of trees from agricultural lands. As per the model rules, applicants are required to register their plantations on the National Timber Management System (NTMS) portal, which is being developed. This involves submitting basic plantation data, including land ownership information, location of the farm with a KML file, species, plantation period, etc. The applicants can periodically update the plantation information and upload geotagged photos of the plantation to ensure traceability. Applicants wishing to harvest trees from registered plantations can apply online through the National Timber Management System, providing specific details of the trees intended for felling. Verifying agencies will carry out site inspections, and based on their verification reports, tree felling permits will be issued for agricultural lands. The Divisional Forest Officers will oversee the performance of these agencies through periodic supervision and monitoring. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change have requested States and UTs to examine the model rules and consider their adoption in order to enhance the ease of doing business in agroforestry and incentivise farmers to integrate trees into their farming systems without facing undue procedural hurdles.(ANI)

Dhami Government to Launch ‘Jalsakhi' for Rural Drinking Water Supply
After 'Lakhpati Didi', another game-changer scheme for women's economic empowerment Dehradun. On the initiative of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Lakhpati Didi scheme launched in 2022 has already helped over 1.63 lakh women in Uttarakhand cross the mark of ₹1 lakh in annual income. Now, in its fifth year, the government is introducing another game-changing scheme — Jalsakhi — aimed at increasing livelihood opportunities for rural women. Under this scheme, responsibilities like rural drinking water supply and billing will be handed over to women self-help groups (SHGs). The Har Ghar Nal (tap water in every home) scheme in Uttarakhand is nearing its target. The drinking water department is now preparing to streamline the water supply system under this scheme. Tasks like providing new connections, bill distribution and correction, bill collection, and maintenance of schemes in rural areas will be outsourced to women SHGs. Additionally, the department will provide water quality testing kits to these SHGs. The groups will also report any malfunction in the water supply systems. For this, selected SHGs will be trained as Nal Jal Mitras (Tap Water Assistants). This pilot project will also offer an incentive of ₹10 per bill to these groups along with a share in the revenue. This initiative will help rural women earn from home and gain an additional source of livelihood. Lakhpati Didi Yojana The Lakhpati Didi scheme was launched in 2022 with the aim of enabling 5.07 lakh women associated with SHGs to earn over ₹1 lakh per year. These women are being trained and linked to income-generating activities like agriculture, horticulture, dairy, tailoring and embroidery, LPG distribution, basic veterinary services, insurance, and digital transactions. In just three years, 1.63 lakh women have already become lakhpatis. Seeing the scheme's success, the government now aims to make a total of 3 lakh women Lakhpati Didis by the end of this financial year. Mukhyamantri Sashakt Bahna Utsav Yojana To further strengthen women's livelihoods, the Dhami government launched the Mukhyamantri Sashakt Bahna Utsav Yojana in August 2023. Currently, more than 30,000 women in the state are benefiting from this scheme. So far, these women SHGs have done business worth ₹4.93 crore under this initiative. The scheme's objective is to provide wider market access for products made by women SHGs. House of Himalayas To promote Uttarakhand's traditional handicrafts, woven products, organic agricultural goods, and herbs, the government launched a unified brand — House of Himalayas — in December 2023. This brand was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has since gained national and international visibility. It features 36 products, 12 of which have received Geographical Indication (GI) tags, confirming their authenticity and linking them to specific districts in Uttarakhand. Currently, House of Himalayas has 11 stalls at state airports, helipads, and major hotels. Its products are also available through various e-commerce platforms. 'The government is making consistent efforts to empower women in every way. Women self-help groups are being connected to various economic activities. In line with this, we are now working to increase women's participation in water supply management as well. Hindu spiritual leader receives New York City honour at interfaith event

Radhanath Swami, a leading figure in the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was presented with the New York City honour at an event at the organisation's Bhakti Center in Manhattan's East Village. The event, titled 'Foundation of Future', brought together city officials and members of the Hindu spiritual community to celebrate Radhanath Swami's contribution to New York's diverse religious landscape. Deputy Commissioner of International Affairs Dilip Chauhan presented the award on behalf of Mayor Eric Adams, praising the role of faith-based organisations in strengthening the city's social fabric. 'On behalf of New York City's 8.5 million residents, I want to express our gratitude for the incredible work being done here,' Chauhan said during the ceremony, which began with traditional devotional singing known as kirtan. Born Richard Slavin in Chicago in 1950, Radhanath Swami's path to spiritual leadership began with his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement before he travelled to India to study ancient Hindu devotional traditions. There he became a disciple of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the modern ISKCON movement who first brought Krishna consciousness to the West in the 1960s. He has since become a bestselling author and established the Govardhan Eco Village in India, described as a sustainable community project addressing environmental and social challenges. The Bhakti Center, where Saturday's event took place, serves as a cultural and spiritual hub offering meditation classes, lectures and devotional practices based on the Hindu text the Bhagavad Gita. Chauhan highlighted the centre's role in what he described as New York's status as a 'global city enhanced by the abundance of nonprofit groups that bring our residents together'. In accepting the honour, Radhanath Swami drew connections between his teacher's original mission to New York decades ago and the continuing work of building understanding across the city's diverse communities. The recognition reflects growing acknowledgement of Hindu spiritual traditions within New York's interfaith landscape, as city officials increasingly engage with religious communities that serve the metropolis's 8.5 million residents.
