Exploring Mitsuiboshi Kaido: Japan's Artisanal Heartlands

The very idea of overtourism—the crowds, the queues, the imposition on locals—makes me feel a little queasy. As record-breaking numbers of tourists continue to arrive in Japan, some of us head in the opposite direction. We avoid the well-worn Golden Route (Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Hakone, Kyoto, and Osaka) and venture into the quieter pockets of Japan. The Mitsuiboshi Kaido , or Three Star Road, is a great pick for intrepid travellers.
This lesser-known route connects Kanazawa, Gokayama, Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Matsumoto. These places remain remarkably under-touristed despite their obvious charm. Though it lacks some of the streamlined transport connections that make the Golden Route so popular, it's still worth the effort. With a car or a taxi, you can reach its National Treasures, World Heritage sites, local artisans, and natural beauty.
My journey began in Takayama, Gifu. Accessible from Tokyo via the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya and then the Limited Express to Takayama, it is a wonderful starting point. Edo-era merchant buildings dot the town, with the heaviest concentration lining the narrow 'Sanmachi' old town. To the chagrin of local residents, the city's old-world appeal has earned it the nickname 'Little Kyoto.' Its atmosphere, however, is far more relaxed, inviting visitors to slow down and explore. While the crowds have nothing on Kyoto, you'll probably find a queue at Kotte Ushi, where the area's famous Hida beef is served sushi-style on a rice cracker. Nearby, you'll find a miso and sake shop, and expansive souvenir stores selling everything from regional crafts to snacks. One souvenir you'll see again and again is the red sarubobo doll, once given to expectant mothers for good luck. Today, they're also given as tokens of affection to those you hope to remain close to.
Rather than pick one from the shelf, I headed to the Hida Takayama Craft Experience Center to make my own. I added personal touches and a handwritten message—imbuing it with meaning for the receiver.
That night, I retired for the evening at Temple Hotel Takayama Zenkoji. I'd always wanted to try a temple stay, but my fondness for creature comforts (and sleeping in) kept me from going full ascetic. This temple-hotel hybrid was the perfect compromise for mod-con princesses like me: minimalist, serene and private, with modern conveniences throughout its 48-square-meter, three-floor layout.
Despite missing the 6am morning prayers, I joined a 7am morning meditation session—because while I've never gone beyond some light Googling of temple stays, I do like the idea of starting the day right with morning meditation in a temple—without having to change out of my pajamas. The session began with a lesson in Buddhism from the temple's bilingual monk. His reflections on our interconnectedness with nature stayed with me long after I left.
After briefly browsing Takayama's famous morning markets—but being unable to buy anything (pro tip: bring cash when you travel through Japan)—I took a car to Gokayama, known for its preserved thatched houses. On the way, I stopped at Salugabamba restaurant, a spot that wouldn't look out of place in the coolest corners of East London. Think: a disco ball reflecting snow at the entrance, Japanese vinyls on the walls, gender-inclusive bathrooms, and rustic tree-trunk slabs turned into tables. After a hearty meal of fried Ishi tofu with homemade soy mayonnaise and lemon koji sauce, I hopped back in the car and continued to Gokayama.
Gokayama is the lesser-known sister of Shirakawago. Both villages are UNESCO World Heritage Sites where people live and work in historic gassho-style houses. Designed with steep, thatched roofs resembling hands in prayer to make it easy for the snow to fall off. But while Shirakawago was awash with coach tour travelers, Gokayama–a mere 35-minute drive away–was virtually empty.
Deep snow framed the picture-book homes, creating a serene, postcard-like scene. It was the perfect setting for people-free photos. Inside one of the houses open to visitors, you could warm up with a cup of green tea by the sunken hearth.

An hour's drive brought me to Inami, a tiny Toyama town known for its woodcarving prowess. At its heart stands Zuisenji Temple, adorned with intricate carvings throughout. With its long history of burning down and being rebuilt, Kyoto woodcarvers were relocated to revive the temple. They passed down their skills through generations of apprentices, who lived and trained with them for five years.
Today, Inami is home to around 200 carvers. Nearly every property is a workshop. Each showcases distinctive works from traditional and spiritual to playful and contemporary. Even the bus stops and vending machines feature wood carvings.
My accommodation for the night, Bed & Craft, leaned into the town's creativity. The decentralized hotel has six renovated properties around the town, each designed in collaboration with a local artisan such as a woodcarver, landscape gardener or potter. I stayed in Taë, created with lacquerware artist Tanaka Sanae. Her vibrant vermilion works were elegantly placed throughout the property; a lacquerware piece on the bedroom wall, chopsticks in the kitchen, a side table upstairs and a lamp in the window overlooking my snow-covered garden.
The idea behind Bed & Craft is that you experience life as an apprentice and live like a local. I drank local wood-infused beer from the pre-stocked fridge, snacked on smoky crisps and had breakfast delivered to my front door for a leisurely morning at 'my' dining table.
Apprenticeship is part of the Bed & Craft concept. So after breakfast, I wandered across the town—not seeing a single other tourist—to meet woodcarver Tanaka Komei. His studio brimmed with glass jars, artfully placed dried grasses, plants and his signature carvings of serene and ethereal women.
He helped me carve a spoon from cherry wood, giving me free rein to choose my wood, design my spoon, and make it my own. He guided me in chiselling with the grain and being 'in conversation with the wood.' It took me some time to remember to work with the wood rather than chip against it and force it into shape. The result was a very distinctive spoon that I'm ridiculously proud of.
With my spoon safely packed into my luggage, I headed to Kanazawa city, just an hour's drive from Inami. The city is known for its traditional crafts like gold leaf, Kaga Yuzen silk dyeing and Kutani ware porcelain. To elevate the area's artisans, Kanazawa City offers studio tours. Over green tea and wagashi, he explained how he draws inspiration from faded merchant house windows, ageing walls and antiques. This gives his highly functional works a distinctive and contemporary look, remarkably different from traditional lacquerware. He uses tofu to give his pieces texture and is constantly experimenting with color. Using traditional techniques, he gives lacquerware a modern makeover, keeping the art relevant for the 21st century.
Tradition and modernity continue to coexist in Kanazawa, not as a contrast, but as evolution. Its Geisha and samurai districts, castle grounds and famed Kenroku-en garden never feel like relics in a city that pulses with innovation. At the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, visitors are invited to engage with art on an immersive level, sometimes becoming part of the art themselves. Modern restaurants like TILE draw inspiration from Japanese traditions. One example is the use of a low, teahouse-style nijiriguchi door—a nod to traditional design. These elements are contrasted with modern elements, like ambient rap music, chunky crystal bowls, and craft beers.

The beauty of the Mitsuiboshi Kaido unfolds in the details: the grain of carved wood, the peace of a snow-covered village and the lightness and depth of a lacquered surface. The Mitsuiboshi Kaido doesn't demand attention; it just asks you to notice.

New pass gets you access to six beautiful moss temples that aren't that Moss Temple. Kyoto's Saihoji Temple is often called Kokedera, or 'Moss Temple,' because of the vegetation that grows in abundance in its garden. However, Kyoto has more than one temple with moss-covered grounds, and unlike Saihoji, they don't require advance reservations that quickly fill up, nor do they require you to copy sutras when visiting. To highlight these often-overlooked alternative moss temples. Central Japan Railway Company/JR Tokai has created a new pass that covers admission to six different Kyoto temples for only 1,000 yen (US$6.90). The two-day pass, called the Kyoto Moss Tour Passport, went on sale at the start of the summer, and we recently were invited to a press tour for it, during which we visited Jojakkoji Temple. Located in the Arashiyama district on the western outskirts of Kyoto, Jojakkoji is about a 20-minute walk from Saga Arashiyama Station. Compared to some of the city's other temples, it's not particularly old, but you can probably guess that relatively young in Kyoto is still plenty old enough to have historical significance, and Jojakkoji was founded in 1596. Likewise, one of the newest buildings on the ground, Jojakkoji's pagoda, was constructed in the 17th century, and is a designated Important Cultural Property. But what really took our breath away was the moss. With slightly overcast skies, the shades of green seemed to take on an added depth, creating a soothing and calming atmosphere as we strolled along the stone path. During our visit, we had a chance to chat with the temple's head priest, Noriaki Nagao, whose enthusiasm for botany felt almost as strong as Buddhism. Nagao explained how rather than trim the garden's shrubbery to perfectly rounded spheres, he prefers to leave some irregularities to the length of their branches when pruning, to help give the greenery a more natural look. He also showed us his favorite type of moss that grows at the temple, a type of Leucobryum called shiragakoke in Japanese… …and as were passing by the pond situated next to Jojakkoji's main hall and soaking in the sense of tranquility… …he pointed out the eggs that had been laid by a frog. ▼ Actually, he specifically indicated that these eggs were laid by 'a forest green tree frog,' proving that he's knowledgeable about both the plants and the animals whose home is within the temple grounds. Nagao's shiragakoke pick is an especially deep cut of moss fandom, as it's not even one of the six varieties showcased by JR within the Kyoto Moss Tour Passport. There's also a grove of maple trees on the grounds, originally of two different varieties but now including some hybrids of the two as well, which makes Jojakkoji worth a visit in the fall too, but the beautiful green space that the place is during the summer is also a wonderful place to spend time. ▼ And then we managed to snap a cool cat pic, which is always a plus. As mentioned above, Jojakkoji is just one of the six mossy temples to which admission is included in the Kyoto Moss Tour Passport, with the others being Gioji, Sanzenin, Shorinin, Enkoji, and Tofukuji. ▼ Gioji (祇王寺) and Jojakkoji (常寂光寺) are on the west side of Kyoto, Shorinin (勝林院), Sanzenin (三千院), and Enkoji (圓光寺) the northeast, and Tofukuji (東福寺) is southeast from Kyoto Station. With each of the temples charging around 500 yen individually for admission, the Kyoto Moss Tour Passport is a great way to save some cash while also getting a charming off-the-beaten path itinerary, and the Passport can be purchased online here through September 29. While indoor activities and hitting the beach are always popular in July and August, this year, we're looking to Japan's stately forests and valleys to help stave off natsubate (summer heat fatigue). In Japanese, these cooling summer getaways are called hishochi. Whether you want to be surrounded by trees, bask in the splashing of a waterfall or take in the beauty of some alpine flora, you'll find your own summer escape in these 10 cool spots across Japan. 1. Iya Valley (Tokushima) Vine bridges, misty forests and mountain air in remote Shikoku Traverse one of Iya Valley's historical rope bridges. Image: AND555/iStock Escape the heat of the city to the mountains of Tokushima Prefecture and you'll find Iya Valley. With a topography that includes Shikoku's second tallest peak, Mount Tsurugi, and several waterways, the Iya Valley has become increasingly popular for its natural landscape. The highlight of the valley is crossing one of the region's three remaining historical vine rope bridges. Suspended 14 meters over the valley below, Iya no Kazurabashi is the main bridge. Stop by in the late evening and see its surroundings illuminated with LEDs. 2. Furano (Hokkaido) Lavender fields and soft summer breezes in Japan's north Treat your eyes and nose to fresh lavender in Furano, Hokkaido. One of the most well-known summer resorts, this getaway features daytime highs of 25 degrees Celsius during July and August. Perhaps the most famous attraction here is flowers and specifically lavender, with fields that stretch out to the horizon, delighting both your visual and olfactory senses. Furano also offers cooling summer foods, like ice cream flavored with local milk and lavender, and spiced soup curry loaded with seasonal vegetables. 3. Kiyomizu Waterfall (Saga) A spiritual cascade surrounded by forest and statues Buddhist statues and the cascading Kiyomizu Falls imbue this site with spiritual power. Image: Cycleいとうゆき/Pixta About two hours on foot or a 15-minute taxi ride from Arita's Ogi station in Saga Prefecture, the 75-meter-high Kiyomizu Waterfall cascades down the mountainside. Kiyomizu is considered one of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan. With Buddhist statuary standing watch near the base, Fuyo Myou, the fearsome destroyer of evil, reminds you of the spiritual power the site has long held. 4. Hotel New Otani Garden (Tokyo) Historic rooftop gardens and misty waterfalls in the city Stroll through this rooftop Japanese garden in the heart of Tokyo. Image: Kuremi/iStock With a history stretching back over 400 years, the garden of the Hotel New Otani was developed by several powerful samurai families. Visitors can enter this 10-acre green space for free and enjoy the cooling mist coming off the main waterfall. Elsewhere, you can explore a variety of historical stone lanterns from the Kamakura (1183-1333) and Edo (1603-1867) periods. Also, check out the stone garden where different elements represent mountains and the sea. 5. Karuizawa (Nagano) A classic summer retreat with ponds, trails and cool lakes Karuizawa's beautiful forests have long been known as an escape from Japan's city heat. Image: bradtzou/iStock Maybe the most famous summer cooling area on our list, Karuizawa is known for its scenery. In the summer, it's hard to beat its lush forests, waterfalls and deep cool lakes. Thanks to the high volume of tourists, Karuizawa also has a well-developed network of shopping and cultural sites to view alongside its breathtaking natural scenery. Don't miss the chance to escape the heat with a stroll alongside Kumoba Pond or enjoying the gentle splashing of Shiraito Waterfall surrounded by verdant forest. 6. Nasu Highland Park (Tochigi) Escape from Tokyo with outdoor fun and hot springs All this greenery is only about one hour from Tokyo by bullet train. Image: TNK/Pixta A bit over an hour from Tokyo via shinkansen, Tochigi Prefecture's Nasu Highland Park is a cooling paradise close to the metropolis. Located at a higher altitude, this park offers summer vacationers the chance to engage in a variety of outdoor activities, from hiking to cycling, at temperatures rarely exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, even in August. With an abundance of hot spring facilities and cultural venues, like the Nasu Stained Glass Museum, you can also relax in indoor-outdoor spaces to avoid the harsh sun. 7. Oirase Area (Aomori) Kilometers of trails, waterfalls and shaded forest hiking Immerse yourself in over 14 kilometers of hiking trails under the lush summer foliage. Image: Anesthesia/Pixta Oirase Gorge in Aomori is bordered by a majestic forest with trickling streams and waterfalls. Oirase Stream, which runs along the bottom of the gorge, is located near an accessible 9-kilometer-long hiking trail which provides access to both scenic bridges and waterfalls. The entire gorge itself extends 14 kilometers from Lake Towada with the surrounding greenery providing a cooling effect in the summer and spectacular colors come autumn. 8. Bijin Bayashi Forest (Niigata) Beech trees and serene paths 2° cooler than town This beautiful forest offers a cool escape from the sweltering summer heat. Image: PIXSTAR/Pixta In Niigata prefecture's Bijin Bayashi Forest, elegant and straight beech trees provide shelter from the unrelenting heat. While usually an alpine species, these beech trees were able to grow unhindered after the land was clear-cut in the early 20th century. The forest takes on a different character each season with a blanket of snow in the winter and a yellow and orange canopy overhead in the fall. Cool off in the summer under the shaded foliage and a breeze that lowers the temperature a couple of degrees. 9. Mount Daisen (Tottori) Hike to shrines and waterfalls on a sacred peak Marvel at the view from Mount Daisen's Oyama Afuri Shrine. Image: kuro/Pixta Tottori Prefecture's Mount Daisen is the tallest peak in the Chugoku area. A dormant volcano, Mount Daisen has significant spiritual importance and has been compared to Mount Fuji. With hiking courses for all levels, come and enjoy the cooling effect of the many pristine forests and waterfalls. The Natsuyama course will bring you to the Misen peak and through a beech forest while the Daisendaki Waterfall course offers the perfect summer resort photo spot of a two-tiered waterfall. 10. Todoroki Valley and Nippara Limestone Caves (Tokyo) Cool caves and urban forest trails — Tokyo's natural air-con There's no sun down here in the Nippara Limestone Caves. Image: Ystudio/Pixta Finally, while we would love to add Setagaya Ward's Todoroki Valley to this list, most of it has been closed to the public since 2023. With a pleasant one-kilometer trail flanked by thick woods and housing a variety of stone structures, you'll want to keep this spot in mind for future summers. As you wait for Todoroki Valley to reopen in March 2026, why not escape the sun altogether with a trip to the Nippara Limestone Caves at the western edge of Tokyo. One of the biggest cave networks in Kanto, this certified natural monument stretches over 1,270 meters long from start to finish. With temperatures hovering around 11 degrees throughout the year, it's the perfect place to cool off and explore an otherworldly landscape. © Japan Today

The Japanese word for lotus, hasu or sometimes hachisu , is said to derive from the word for bee's nest, hachinosu , due to the similar honeycomb appearance of the plant's seed pod. The lotus is closely associated with Buddhism. As the plant grows from the mud on the bottom of ponds, it symbolizes the possibility of transcending this world's impurity to achieve enlightenment. While the blooming seasons may vary depending on the kind of lotus, July is typically peak time for enjoying the flowers. Early morning viewing events are held at temples, shrines, and parks where lotuses are grown. Tokyo's Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park is particularly famous for the beauty of its flowers, which typically bloom from mid-July until mid-August.
