India investigators urge public not to speculate on Air India crash
India's aviation investigation body says it is too early to reach any "definite conclusions" over what caused the deadly Air India crash last month that killed 260 people, as the airline clears the rest of its fleet of any issues related to its fuel switches. In a statement, Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) chief GVG Yugandhar stressed that the investigation into the crash of AI171 was not yet complete after the release of the bureau's preliminary report into the disaster on Saturday. That report found the fuel switches for the plane's engines had been flicked to the "cutoff" position seconds after the Boeing 787 Dreamliner lifted off the runway at Amenabad Airport. The plane then began to descend into a nearby neighbourhood, with an attempt to restore fuel to the engines unsuccessful. The report also contained details gleaned from the plane's the cockpit voice recorder, in which one pilot was heard asking the other why he cut off the fuel. "The other pilot responded that he did not do so," the report said, without identifying who made those remarks. Mr Yugandhar urged caution in interpreting the findings of the preliminary report. "We urge both the public and the media to refrain from spreading premature narratives that risk undermining the integrity of the investigative process," he said. The AAIB has said the investigation's final report would come out with the "root causes and recommendations". The two pilots in the flight deck were Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder, who had total flying experience of 15,638 hours and 3,403 hours, respectively. Before the AAIB chief's statement on Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the cockpit recording of dialogue between the two pilots of the flight indicated that the captain cut the flow of fuel to the plane's engines. The newspaper said First Officer Kunder, who was flying the plane, asked Captain Sabharwal why he moved the fuel switches to the "cutoff" position seconds after lifting off the runway. The newspaper did not say if there was any evidence that Mr Sabharwal did move the switches, beyond the verbal exchange it cited. But it quoted US pilots who have read the Indian authorities' report as saying that Mr Kunder, the pilot actively flying, likely would have had his hands full pulling back on the Dreamliner's controls at that stage of the flight. Reuters could not independently verify the Wall Street Journal's report. A separate internal investigation of Air India's Boeing 787 fleet has meanwhile found no issues with the fuel control switches, according to an internal communication within the airline. The switches have come under scrutiny following last month's crash, with India's aviation regulator ordered the country's airlines this week to investigate the locking feature on the switches of several Boeing models. The order came after Boeing notified operators that the fuel switch locks on its jets were safe. Air India's probe found no problems with the locking mechanism. "Over the weekend, our Engineering team initiated precautionary inspections on the locking mechanism of Fuel Control Switch (FCS) on all our Boeing 787 aircraft," the airline's flight operations department said in a communication to its pilots. "The inspections have been completed and no issues were found," the communication said, noting that it had complied with the regulator's directives. Other countries have also ordered their airlines to examine fuel switches on Boeing aircraft. Singapore found them all to be "functioning properly". "Our checks confirmed that all fuel switches on SIA (Singapore Airlines) and Scoot's Boeing 787 aircraft are functioning properly and comply with regulatory requirements," an SIA spokesperson told AFP this week. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner that crashed last month was heading from Ahmedabad in western India to London's Gatwick Airport.
