32 go on trial over fatal hotel fire in Türkiye
Entire families perished when the huge blaze swept through the Grand Kartal Hotel in the northern mountain resort of Kartalkaya in the early hours of Jan 21.
Questions have multiplied about fire safety measures at the hotel and victims' families allege that negligence contributed to the high death toll.
More than 130 people were injured and the 12-storey building was destroyed.
Thirteen of the defendants - including senior officials at the hotel, the fire department and the city council - face up to 1,998 years in prison each on 78 charges, including "manslaughter with possible intent" to kill.
Survivors and experts have said the hotel's fire alarm system did not work.
According to the indictment, the suspects facing manslaughter charges include the hotel's owner, managers and members of the board, the deputy mayor of Bolu city and two fire department officials.
Before the hearing, victims' families gathered outside Bolu High School, where the trial is taking place, carrying portraits of the deceased.
They read out a statement, alleging countless breaches of safety and attempts to conceal evidence.
During the fire, the owners, managers and employees of the Grand Kartal Hotel failed to alert guests or activate the alarm system.
"They rushed to save their cars while our loved ones were suffocating in the smoke," they alleged.
"An inspection report drawn up just one month before the fire clearly showed a lack of fire safety measures but the hotel owners ignored it on the grounds that the measures would be too costly," they continued.
"We know that the authorities turned a blind eye to this negligence, that evidence was concealed and that the camera recordings were deleted."
At the time of the fire, the tourism ministry and the Bolu city council blamed each other for the disaster.
Due to the large number of defendants and plaintiffs - 210 civil parties, the Bolu High Criminal Court is sitting at the high school's sports hall.
Ozgur Ozel, leader of the main opposition CHP, would attend the hearing, the social-democratic party said.

GrabFood rider helps lost 6-year-old twins wandering Sembawang alone at 1am
SINGAPORE: A GrabFood rider who stopped at a red light in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Sembawang was surprised to spot two young children wandering alone by the roadside. Muhammad Harris, 33, was waiting on his motorcycle along Admiralty Drive at around 1 a.m. on July 17 when he noticed two children picking up sticks and dried leaves near the traffic light. 'I looked around to see if there were any adults with them, but it seemed like only the two of them,' he told Stomp, 'When the green man started flashing, they crossed the road on their own, but what touched my heart was that even at that age, the brother held his sister's hand tightly as they crossed together.' Concerned for their safety, Mr Harris made a U-turn and cautiously approached the children on his motorcycle, taking care not to frighten them. 'I didn't want to scare them, so I stopped at the side and asked in Malay, 'Adik nak pergi mana malam-malam?' which means, 'Where are you going so late at night?'' The boy and girl told him they were six-year-old twins and that they had left their grandmother's home and were on their way to their mother's house. When Mr Harris asked if they knew where she lived, the boy confidently replied, 'Go straight, turn right,' but when pressed for more details, like the block or unit number, or even a phone number, the children couldn't answer. Realising they might be lost, Mr Harris parked his bike and offered to walk with them in hopes of figuring out where they were headed. 'I asked their names, ages, and what school they go to,' he said. 'But halfway through the walk, they said we might be going the wrong way.' Still unsure where they were supposed to go and with the children's safety in mind, Mr Harris called the police and stayed with them until officers arrived on the scene. 'The police took down my particulars and said I was good to go and that they would take care of the kids,' he said. Thankfully, the story ended on a reassuring note. Mr Harris posted about the situation on Facebook, and later that same day, a friend of the children's mother reached out and let him know she had seen his post and would try to contact the children's mum. 'She updated me a few minutes later that the kids were safely back with their mother,' Mr Harris said. Mr Harris, who downplayed his actions, said he did what any concerned adult would have done. 'Seeing them by themselves made me worried. They're still just kids, and crossing the road without an adult is dangerous. Luckily, it was so late at night that there weren't many vehicles,' he said.

French court tries couple accused of plan to 'sacrifice' son
BORDEAUX: A French couple went on trial on Thursday (Jul 17) accused of planning to "sacrifice" their five-year-old son in the Moroccan desert, accusations they have strongly denied. The two music teachers were arrested in southern Spain in late 2023 as they were about to board a ferry to Morocco after buying a new four-wheel-drive and subletting their apartment near the French city of Bordeaux. An alarmed relative had told French prosecutors that the father intended to "sacrifice" his son in the desert because he believed he was "possessed", the investigation showed. The father, Florian L, denies ever having said that, his lawyer Audrey Boussillon said. "Never did he have the intention to harm his son in any way," she added. The couple, who hold "anti-system" and "mystical" beliefs, vehemently reject the charges of being part of a criminal gang and failing in their duties as parents, their defence team has said. The attorney for the mother Marie L, Aurelie Filippi-Codaccioni, said the couple had been to Morocco two years earlier and had wanted to return for an undetermined period. But Merlene Labadie, a lawyer representing the interests of the child, said the couple's beliefs endangered their son, who spoke of the importance of "being cold, scared and removing the snake within us" when found. He is now in the custody of his maternal grandparents, she said. The trial is to last a single day and the verdict will likely be announced at a later date.

Fire at mall in Iraq leaves at least 69 dead: Officials
BAGHDAD: A massive fire in a hypermarket in al-Kut city in eastern Iraq has left at least 69 people dead and 11 others missing, the city's health authorities and two police sources told Reuters on Thursday (Jul 17). Reuters' footage of the aftermath of the overnight fire showed the blackened exterior of the "Corniche Hypermarket" building, with rescue teams and security forces still at the site. Videos verified by Reuters showed firefighters spraying water on the blazing building overnight and people climbing from the roof with the help of rescue teams. "We have more bodies that have not been recovered still under fire debris," city official Ali al-Mayahi told Reuters. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but the province's governor said initial results from an investigation would be announced within 48 hours, the INA state news agency reported. "We have filed lawsuits against the owner of the building and the mall," INA quoted the governor as saying. A lack of safety measures in Iraq has led to large death tolls in fires. In 2023, more than 100 people were killed after a fire swept through a crowded wedding hall in a northern Iraqi town.
