LONGSHOT
SPIRIT LEAD ME (2.25 Newbury)
He ran his best race for a long time when beaten five lengths at Ffos Las 18 days ago. He's dangerous from this reduced mark.
EACH-WAY THIEF
HK FOURTEEN (3.15 Haydock)
He was in fine fettle winning at Windsor two runs ago. This is an ideal trip so he should be right there again.
LORD ABAMA (3.50 Haydock)
He battled to score over this trip at Thirsk last time out and should be in the mix with a repeat.

Paul Gascoigne recovering after collapse at home

PAUL GASCOIGNE IS recovering in hospital after the former Tottenham and England star collapsed at his home. Gascoigne was rushed to hospital by his driver and assistant Steve Foster, who found the 58-year-old in a semi-conscious state in his Dorset house. 'Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now,' Foster told The Sun newspaper. Advertisement Gascoigne was reportedly admitted to an intensive care ward after being discovered on Friday, but later moved to an acute medical unit, where his condition is said to be stable. Foster said Gascoigne would 'like to thank everyone for the support he's received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best.' One of the most naturally gifted footballers of his generation, Gascoigne played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton. He was capped 57 times by England, becoming a global star after his brilliant form at the 1990 World Cup in Italy reached a tearful crescendo with his emotional reaction to a yellow card, which would have ruled him out of the final, in a last four loss against West Germany. Gascoigne also starred for England during their run to the Euro 96 semi-finals, where they again lost to Germany on penalties. The midfielder's issues with alcohol addiction and depression are well-documented and he has suffered a series of health problems in recent years. In 2020, Gascoigne said he had turned his life around after having anti-alcohol pellets sewn into his stomach. But last year, he admitted on the High Performance podcast that he had fallen into drinking again and was living in a spare room at the home of his agent. – © AFP 2025

Jockey who fled country after ‘practically jumping off' horse hit with massive 18-month ban and fine

A JOCKEY who fled the country after 'practically jumping off' a horse has been hit with a massive 18-month ban and fine. Footage of Brazilian rider Lemos 'Lai Lai' De Souza's spill from favourite Pacific Power gained worldwide notoriety. De Souza was seen appearing to bounce in the saddle before theatrically falling off the horse seconds after the gates opened. Commentator Devon Pretorius said at the time: "He practically jumped off the horse." Stewards attempted to open an urgent investigation into the incident, which occurred earlier this month. Advertisement But matters were complicated after it emerged De Souza had fled the country for Singapore so he could receive medical treatment. The jockey was said to have returned a few days later - giving stewards the chance to probe him. And, following the completion of the investigation, they decided to ban De Souza for 18 months and hand him a £7,500 fine. In another blow, the jockey is not allowed to reapply for his licence until a further 12 months after his ban ends. He could have been disqualified for life but stewards took into account his previous good record. Footage of De Souza's fall was viewed hundreds of thousands of times online. And many agreed with Pretorious' description of the incident. Advertisement He said: "A look at the replay here… Pacific Power jumps and Lai Lai - I'm not too sure if the saddle slipped. "Then he pretty much knew his fate about ten metres out of the starting stalls and then practically jumped off the horse as he knew he wasn't going to get his foot back in his irons on his right side." This is the second such incident to rock racing in recent months. Aidan O'Brien may be forced to retire ‘superstar' millionaire horse as he's hit by crushing triple whammy of injuries

A 'SUPERSTAR' Aidan O'Brien horse may have run her final race - as the iconic trainer handles a crushing triple whammy of injuries. Lake Victoria, who has won more than £1million, has lost just once in her short career, when sixth in the 1,000 Guineas last May. O'Brien said in an interview with Sun Racing's Matt Chapman on ITV that she could be 'retired altogether'. That cruel blow comes at the same time huge doubts have surfaced over Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin. O'Brien has never hid his admiration for his Marble Hill Stakes winner Albert Einstein, saying he is 'as fast a horse as we have ever seen'. Advertisement But the two-year-old colt was forced to miss Royal Ascot when favourite for the Coventry. Charles Darwin kept the Ballydoyle flag flying with victory in the Norfolk and is currently 9-4 favourite for the Nunthorpe at York's Ebor Festival next month. But O'Brien said he too recently suffered a setback and may not be seen again until next season. O'Brien said: "Lake Victoria is not back in exercise. She's doing well physically but she's not back in work yet. Advertisement Most read in Horse Racing "She might be left alone until next year or retired altogether. "Those are the decisions that will be made as the weeks go by. "Albert Einstein, we probably won't see again this year. "Because he was so special - from the time we first started working him he was always head and shoulders above everything else. Advertisement "Everyone was aware of that and I know the way the lads think, usually, they won't want to take any chances whatsoever with him." While in a separate interview with Racing TV, O'Brien said of Charles Darwin: "He has to come back. He had a little setback as well. "We've had to ease off after hurting his foot. "He's a big horse and those type of horses, after having two or three runs, they're educated for next year. Advertisement "If you come back and run them, fine, but if you don't, after those two or three runs, it's no problem really." O'Brien still has a squad of monsters to unleash over the coming weeks. Coronation Cup winner Jan Brueghel is all set for a blockbuster rematch with Calandagan in Saturday's King George at Ascot. Illinois is being prepared for next week's Goodwood Cup - where he could be joined by awesome Bahrain Trophy winner Scandinavia. Advertisement Henri Matisse is set to take on Field Of Gold in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Whirl will clash with See The Fire in the Nassau at the same festival. While, looking ahead to York next month, breathtaking Coral-Eclipse winner Delacroix is set for round two with Ombudsman in the Juddmonte.
