'Deport Melania, her parents': Petition slams Trump's citizenship policy

Business Standard16 hours ago
Amid mounting backlash over US President Donald Trump's reported plans to deport naturalized citizens, a viral petition on MoveOn, a progressive advocacy platform, called for the deportation of First Lady Melania Trump, her parents, and son Barron Trump--arguing that Trump's own family should not be exempted from the policies he championed.
The petition stated, "Since Trump wants to deport naturalized citizens, I believe it is only fair that Melania and her parents are on the first boat out. In addition, Melania's anchor baby, Baron, should be forced to leave as well because we know that his mother's mother was born in a different country. That is part of the criteria that Trump is putting into place. Your mother's mother has to have been born in the United States and we know Melania's mother was born elsewhere. If it's good for one, it's good for all! There should be no exceptions! On the first boat or flight out!"
The petition further argued that the move would prevent perceptions of favoritism, adding, "If this is truly about national security, then Melania needs to go!" The remarks reflected growing public frustration over what many viewed as double standards in Trump's deportation agenda.
According to Fox News, the petition surfaced just days after Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters, during an anti-DOGE protest in Los Angeles on March 25, suggested that Trump should investigate and potentially deport Melania Trump.
"When he [Trump] talks about birthright, and he's going to undo the fact that the Constitution allows those who are born here, even if the parents are undocumented, they have a right to stay in America. If he wants to start looking so closely to find those who were born here and their parents were undocumented, maybe he ought to first look at Melania," Waters was seen saying from the stage, various videos posted on social media showed, Fox News reported.
She added, "We don't know whether or not her parents were documented. And maybe we better just take a look." According to Fox News, her remarks were met with loud cheers from protestors at the rally, which focused on opposing Trump's federal government downsizing agenda.
Fox News also reported that Melania Trump, born in the former Yugoslavia, became a US citizen in 2006. She was the first US first lady to become a naturalized citizen and the second to be born outside the United States, after Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams, wife of President John Quincy Adams.
In 2018, The New York Times reported that Melania sponsored her parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, for green cards and later citizenship. Amalija Knavs passed away in 2024, while Viktor Knavs has been seen at recent public events with the Trump family.
Waters' comments came in response to an executive order signed by Trump on his first day in office that aimed to reinterpret the 14th Amendment and restrict birthright citizenship. The order, currently under judicial review, seeks to exclude individuals born to undocumented immigrants or parents on temporary visas from automatic US citizenship.
During the March 25 protest, Waters joined hundreds marching to the VA hospital on Los Angeles' Wilshire Boulevard. She declared, "We are here because we are not going to let Trump, we're not going to let Elon Musk, his co-president, or anybody else take the United States Constitution down."
Her remarks on Melania Trump quickly spread on social media platforms like TikTok and X, drawing sharp criticism from conservatives. "Maxine Waters wants to deport Melania," posted the popular X account End Wokeness, as cited by Fox News.

Trump Attacking Me Because...: Zohran Mamdani Hits Back At US Prez Over Deportation Threat

New Delhi: Zohran Mamdani, the Indian-origin candidate running for mayor of New York City, has responded sharply to US President Donald Trump's deportation threats. Mamdani accused Trump of fueling division and resorting to personal attacks to distract from his administration's failures in addressing the needs of working-class Americans. Mamdani, a 33-year-old Indian-origin politician and Democrat, posted a video on social media rejecting Trump's threats and vowing to continue his campaign undeterred. 'It is less so because of who I am, because of where I come from, because of how I look or how I speak, and more so because he wants to distract from what I fight for. I fight for working people,' Mamdani said in the video. Donald Trump is attacking me because he is desperate to distract from his war on working people. We must and we will fight back. — Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) July 2, 2025 Since Mamdani's rise in the New York mayoral race, Trump has repeatedly targeted him with personal insults, calling him a 'communist' and a 'lunatic,' while also making false claims about his immigration status. During a July 1 visit to a Florida detention center, Trump responded to Mamdani's vow not to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement by saying, 'Well then, we'll have to arrest him.' He added, 'We'll be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation.' Mamdani has characterized the attacks as part of a broader Republican effort to silence dissent and shift focus away from issues that affect everyday Americans. He specifically criticized Trump's proposed tax and spending legislation, dubbed the 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' which is heading for a key vote in Congress. 'He wants to focus on me so that we don't focus on a bill that would strip healthcare from families and take food away from the hungry,' Mamdani said. 'We will not back down. We will fight back.' The candidate also accused Trump of deepening political and social divisions. 'He is choosing to divide rather than admit how he has let down working-class Americans, not only in New York City but across the country.' Despite Trump's rhetoric, Mamdani remains committed to protecting immigrant communities and defending policies that aim to uplift working people. His message: he will not be intimidated.

The five Republicans who defied Trump and blew up his big beautiful bill

On the eve of America's Independence Day, a surprising revolt unfolded as five Republicans defied President Trump by voting against his sweeping tax-and-spending package, stalling its progress. This procedural vote became the longest in House history, exposing deep divisions within the GOP. Trump offered to intervene, but Speaker Johnson declined, determined to resolve the standoff internally. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Who are the five Republicans? Tired of too many ads? In the hours before America's Independence Day, a surprising revolt erupted on the House floor, five Republicans defiantly voted 'No' on President Trump's sweeping tax-and-spending package, stalling the bill's progress and exposing deep divides in the modern procedural vote to advance the bill has now dragged on for over two hours, becoming the longest procedural vote in House history, with Speaker Mike Johnson refusing to close the vote until the defectors, some of whom have left the Capitol, can be persuaded to flip. Members may change their vote until the gavel watching the drama unfold, offered to personally call lawmakers. 'Who else needs to have a discussion? I'm ready to get on the phone,' he told Speaker Johnson, according to a Fox News interview. Johnson reportedly declined, saying, 'Mr. President, you've done your job, and we'll do ours here.'Massie voted 'no' on the procedural rule, something he rarely does, even when opposing a bill's substance. Known for his deep fiscal conservatism, Massie opposes any legislation that raises the national deficit. 'Congress chose to sell out taxpayers instead,' he wrote on Massie, a libertarian-leaning conservative from Kentucky, claimed he has organized a bloc of at least 10 House Republicans prepared to vote down the bill. Backed publicly by Elon Musk , who called the bill a 'debt bomb' and vowed to fund primary challengers against GOP supporters, Massie has positioned himself as the bill's most formidable opponent. 'We've got enough,' he reportedly told NOTUS, referring to the number needed to block the final from Air Force One, Trump predicted Massie will be 'history' in next year's primary, calling him 'Rand Paul Junior' and 'not a very smart guy.' 'He's always a no. Nothing constructive at all,' Trump added. Despite the attacks, Massie remains defiantStepping off the floor, Massie said he switched to a 'no' on the rule because 'if it goes down, I can't be a yes,' not wanting to be on record supporting a failed measure. He has long opposed the bill itself but initially backed the procedural step. Still, he hinted he may flip back if GOP leaders muster the votes.A centrist from a swing district, Fitzpatrick's opposition stems from both the Medicaid cuts in the Senate version and broader concerns about spending. He quietly exited the chamber after casting his later, as Republican colleagues scrambled to find him and plead for a reversal, Fitzpatrick abruptly left the chamber and could not be located. Ukraine war ceasefire in sight? Nah! Russia is in driver's seat and whatever Trump is doing is not serious: Swaminathan Aiyar

Swaminathan Aiyar, Consulting Editor, ET Now, says amidst Washington's desire for a ceasefire and resolution in the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump's approach remains unclear. His statements on ending the conflict are viewed with skepticism, mirroring reactions to his tariff policies. He wants to claim a victory in stopping the war. While aiming to reduce commitments to Ukraine and increase sanctions, the effectiveness of these measures in compelling Putin to negotiate is uncertain. ADVERTISEMENT How might the suspension of US arms supply impact Ukraine's political stability and military capabilities, even as Russia is making territorial gains? Swaminathan Aiyar: Every country in a war is fighting out of stocks. So, if the United States stops, it does not mean that Ukraine will run out of weapons in a day or even a week. Mr Trump has a way of changing his mind every second day. I am not clear at this particular point what his aim is. It is certainly not the case that Zelenskyy is insisting on – continuing the war or that Russia is keen on a ceasefire. In fact, we have just heard that the largest ever number of drones have been used by Russia against Zelenskyy in the last few days. So, in these conditions, it is very far from clear what Trump is trying to do. I would add that the Europeans, to the extent they can, are giving full support to Zelenskyy. So, it is not as though they will be deprived totally of any supplies, they will get supplies from the other parties. The key question is, does he have a proposal which both sides will accept? At this point of time, Russia has the advantage. I mean, it has the men, it has the arms, it has the money. Can it continue with the war if it feels like it? And the answer is yes. Again and again, Putin has said that I want the whole of Ukraine, whether it is a negotiating position or not. So, at this point of time when Trump wants to have a quick deal, whether he has the ability to do so by these various tactics is far from clear. Let us see what happens. I have a feeling that this is just a short-term tactic. Beyond that, he has given a number of threats to countries like India and China that have been buying Soviet crude oil. By now, Indians have diversified, but there can be no question that there is a very large grey market and there are ships which nobody knows where they are from, that are supplying oil through various chains. So, let us see. The Indian importers are going to be careful at this point of time not to be tempted just by the low price of Russian oil on the grey market that may put a little more pressure on Mr Putin. I hope so. I mean, we would all want a ceasefire and some kind of resolution on Ukraine. The problem right now is that Putin is on a very strong wicket. What does he have to lose if he continues? That is the real problem and let us see whether there is any way out of that. ADVERTISEMENT But let us talk a bit more about Trump's strategy with respect to the Russia-Ukraine war. In the past when he assumed office, he showed a lot of enthusiasm regarding halting this war within days. But now his patience seems to be wearing thin. But is this necessarily indicating a shift in the US policy when it comes to Ukraine and Russia? Do you want to throw a bit more light on this changed US policy perhaps towards Russia and Ukraine? Swaminathan Aiyar: All I can say is that he keeps shifting. He was initially extremely rude to Mr Zelenskyy when he went over to the USA and Trump and Vance said he would have to apologise and behave properly and thank them more, which he did. And then later on when the Russians were not giving in, he declared that Putin is mad, Putin is stupid, and very funny the Russians reacted by saying we do not take this seriously. So, they could see the acting. At this point, he is acting like he has always acted and he claims that in deal-making you say various things in order to prepare yourself for the final. So, at this point I would say we do not know what his tactics are. He wants a ceasefire that is clear. How he pushes both sides into a ceasefire is not clear and he may once again call Putin mad the day after tomorrow, we do not know! So, let us see what happens. ADVERTISEMENT At this point of time, I would simply say, nobody is taking Trump seriously on any one statement because he keeps changing. So, when he begins to show a more clearcut coherent line, I think then we will say this is what Trump wants to do. At this point of time, people say yawn, do not take it too seriously, he may go back on this tomorrow, wait and see whether there is a cogent line, then we will know where he is actually going. Disruption and confusion has been Donald Trump's policy as far as this administration is concerned and of course, there is another story that is brewing in the United States – the India-US trade deal. He has made a lot of flip-flops on that. When the United States actually decides to curb the transfer of some weapons, what is behind this selective suspension? Swaminathan Aiyar: He has said that he is going to do this again and again. It is not the first time he said this. The very first time he said that I am going to do nothing at all. I mean, this is before Zelenskyy landed there. And then some of it was resumed and then it was partial. ADVERTISEMENT So, I will say it is like his statements on tariffs as well. Initially the stock market would react violently to a statement. Now he keeps making different statements. The stock market said just relax. This guy is not to be taken seriously until we get to the final blow. So, right now, it is undoubtedly true that Washington wants a ceasefire. Washington wants a resolution. Washington wants an out from constant supply of money and arms and other things. It does not want to continue. At the same time, he wants to claim a victory in stopping the war. But how he is going to stop Putin is unclear right now. He is trying very hard on oil. Actually, Biden was the one who tightened the screws and now it is going to be much more difficult for Russia to sell oil. But the way the war is going at this point, I do not see that Russia can be stopped in its tracks right now by further sanctions on oil or other things. So, all we can say is that we are in a ferment of not knowing what is going to happen. It is almost difficult to think that Trump has only been in office for about 100 days. It seems such a long time since he stirred the pot and everybody began to wonder what he is going to do in war. So, I would say that he certainly wants to reduce his commitments to Ukraine. He wants to combine that with greater sanctions and forcing Putin to the negotiating table. Nobody really knows how this is going to happen or on whose terms. Zelenskyy's real fear is that Russia will say okay we have a ceasefire, they will be a ceasefire and then they will resume the attack. In that case, what will Trump do? After all these sanctions, if Russia has not given way, what is the additional thing he is going to do? So, I would say Russia at this point is in the driver's seat and what Trump is doing right now is not serious. (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel)
