Astronomer CEO resigns after Coldplay 'kiss cam' scandal

NBC Newsa day ago
Data company Astronomer said Saturday that its CEO has resigned, days after a 'kiss cam' at a Coldplay concert in Massachusetts showed a man and a woman embracing each other before running off and becoming one of the most viral moments of the year.
The New York-based tech company said in a statement on X that its CEO Andy Byron 'tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted.'
Byron was identified by online users as the man in the viral video, with users claiming that he is a married man. However, NBC News has not independently confirmed this or identified the woman.
'As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding,' the company said. 'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.'
The company added that it will begin a search for its next chief executive, while its co-founder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy will service as its interim CEO.
Byron did not immediately respond to a request for comment and has not responded to previous inquiries.
The debacle began on Wednesday at a Coldplay concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough when a 'kiss cam' displayed couples in the audience.
When the camera landed on a blond woman and a silver-haired man — later believed by social media users to be Byron — the woman covered her face and the man ducked out of the frame.
Coldplay's lead singer, Chris Martin, appeared to poke fun at the awkward moment.
'Oh, look at these two. You're all right,' he said, according to video footage from the concert that circulated widely online. 'You're OK. Oh, what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy.'
The moment went viral online, with videos of the encounter accruing millions of views across X, Instagram and TikTok, and spawning thousands of memes.
On Friday, Astronomer spoke out for the first time since the viral moment, saying in a statement that Byron was placed on leave.
The little-known company, which has under 500 employees according to its LinkedIn profile, appeared to address how the fanfare around the 'kiss cam' incident has affected its reputation in its Saturday statement.
'While awareness of our company may have changed overnight, our product and our work for our customers have not,' the company said.

Coldplay kiss-cam scandal: Lawyers weigh in to devCan Andy Byron sue band?

Andy Byron, the former CEO of Astronomer, was caught on the kiss-cam at a Coldplay concert last week, leading to his resignation - but could he sue the band for the embarrassing moment? This week has undoubtedly been chaotic for former Astronomer chief executive Andy Byron. ‌ The married technology boss landed himself in hot water when he was caught on the kiss-cam at a Coldplay gig at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, getting cosy with Kristin Cabot, Astronomer's head of HR - and crucially, not his wife. ‌ After the footage went viral, Astronomer released a statement and Byron stepped down from his role, shortly before Martin made a statement warning fans what to expect at his next concerts. ‌ Amid the resulting furore, rumours emerged that Byron might pursue legal action, despite Martin cautioning supporters what they could expect at his upcoming show. The Mirror US consulted two barristers about Byron's possible legal position against the British rock band. "Any legal claims from Byron would be dead on arrival," stated Ron Zambrano of West Coast Employment Lawyers in Los Angeles. "He has no grounds to sue.", reports the Mirror US, reports the Express. ‌ Zambrano explained further: "First, it would immediately be struck down as a restriction on creative speech and Coldplay's ability to be artistic during their performances. Second, Byron and Cabot waived their right to privacy when they decided to attend a public event, so their public display of affection is on them, not on Coldplay. They just got caught." Supporting Zambrano's view, Tre Lovell of the Lovell Firm, who specialises in civil and entertainment law, agreed: "CEO Andy Bryon has no legal recourse against Coldplay for putting him on the big screen." ‌ Lovell remarked, "When you are out in public, you have no right to privacy for your actions. People are free to photograph you and video you." He clarified, "What people cannot do is use the video or photographs to violate your right to publicity in terms of using your image for commercial purposes or defame you and depict you in a manner that is false or untruthful." Expanding on the implications, Lovell said: "The fact that the big screen caught the CEO doing something embarrassing or immoral in public is on him." To date, neither Byron nor Cabot have commented on the footage. However, Coldplay's lead singer Chris Martin seemed to allude to the event with a bit of playful banter during his next show. Without directly mentioning the incident, he jokingly cautioned the crowd about the possibility of being displayed on the big screen, advising: "Please, if you haven't done your makeup, do your makeup now!"

Country singer Jason Aldean hit with backlash for poking fun at tech CEO affair after his own cheating scandal

Jason Aldean faced criticism after mocking a tech CEO ensnared in a cheating scandal, when he himself faced public scrutiny over an admitted infidelity. It comes as the IT company CEO captured in a widely circulated video showing him embracing an employee at a Coldplay concert has resigned. Andy Byron resigned from his job as CEO of Cincinnati-based Astronomer Inc., according to a statement posted on LinkedIn by the company Saturday. 'Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met,' the company said in its post on LinkedIn. The move comes a day after the company said that Byron had been placed on leave and the board of directors had launched a formal investigation into the jumbotron incident, which went viral. A company spokesman later confirmed in a statement to AP that it was Byron and Astronomer chief people officer Kristin Cabot in the video. The short video clip shows Byron and Cabot as captured on the jumbotron at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, during a Coldplay concert on Wednesday. Lead singer Chris Martin asked the cameras to scan the crowd for his 'Jumbotron Song,' when he sings a few lines about the people the camera lands on. 'Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy,' he joked. Internet sleuths identified the man as the chief executive officer of a U.S.-based company and the woman as its chief people officer. Pete DeJoy, Astronomer's cofounder and chief product officer, has been tapped as interim CEO while the company conducts a search for Byron's successor. It's easy to miss, but most concert venues have signs informing the audience that they could be filmed during the event. Look for them on the walls when you arrive and around the bar areas or toilets. It's common practice especially when bands like to use performances for music videos or concert films. The venue in this case, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, also has a privacy policy online which states: 'When you visit our location or attend or participate in an event at our location, we may capture your image, voice and/or likeness, including through the use of CCTV cameras and/or when we film or photograph you in a public location.' 'They probably would have got away with it if they hadn't reacted,' said Alison Taylor, a clinical associate professor at New York University's Stern School of Business. And by the time the alleged identities emerged on social media, it hit a classic nerve around 'leaders acting like the rules don't apply to them,' she added. Still, Taylor and others stress how quickly such a video can lead to an internet search to find the people involved — and note that it's important to remember that such 'doxing' isn't just reserved for famous people. Beyond someone simply spotting a familiar face and spreading the word, technological advances, such as the rising adoption of artificial intelligence, have made it easier and faster overall to find just about anyone in a viral video today. 'It's a little bit unsettling how easily we can be identified with biometrics, how our faces are online, how social media can track us — and how the internet has gone from being a place of interaction, to a gigantic surveillance system,' said Mary Angela Bock, an associate professor in the University of Texas at Austin's School of Journalism and Media. 'When you think about it, we are being surveilled by our social media. They're tracking us in exchange for entertaining us.'

Nicole took over taking over the role from acting legend Glenn Close, 78, who won her third Tony Award in 1995 for the role. After watching Nicole's performance earlier this year, Glenn said: 'You can't approach Norma with a faint heart. She tests your metal [and] demands that you dig deep.' She continued: 'Nicole's performance is an act of raw artistry and astounding bravery. 'She and the entire production blew me away. I loved meeting Nicole, [her co-star] Tom Francis, and many members of the ensemble backstage afterwards!' Sunset Boulevard has been a huge success and grossed more than $1.08 million during its first week of six previews alone at the St. James Theatre in New York City. Nicole initially played the role of Norma when it opened in London in 2023, whilst West End legend Rachel Tucker served as her alternate. Last year, upon hearing the news that she would be starring the Broadway show, Nicole raved that she could 'hardly believe' that she was getting the chance. 'Little Nicole has waited for this her whole life. And I get to do it with this beautiful cast @sunsetblvdmusical and these two heroes of mine @andrewlloydwebber @jamielloyd,' she wrote on Instagram.
