'The submissions of the petitioner's counsel that information that is to be kept confidential need not be divulged, cannot be accepted. The protection of consumer privacy cannot eclipse the lawful imperative of investigating officers to secure evidence and take the investigation to its logical conclusion. Confidentiality must coexist with accountability,' said Justice M Nagaprasanna, rejecting the petition filed by PhonePe Private Limited.
It further said that today, conventional crimes have receded and new-age crimes have sprung up in large numbers. New-age crimes are cybercrimes, modern offences which demand a swift, and effective response.
The police must be empowered within the limits of law to unearth digital footprints that could otherwise vanish. Therefore, while privacy as contended by the petitioner should be maintained, it cannot be wielded as a shield against lawful investigation, the court said.
CEN police issued summons dated December 7, 2022, to PhonePe to provide details after receiving a complaint from Prashanth, a resident of Chikkamagaluru district, that he lost funds while transacting through several payment gateways for cricket betting. However, PhonePe contended that it is protected under the Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891, and cannot divulge the information.

Ganja peddler held from Bollarum; Bidar-based supplier & 80 clients in Hyd identified through UPI transactions
Hyerabad: The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) arrested a 23-year-old ganja peddler and seized two kg of the contraband from his possession in Bollarum on Friday evening. The accused has been identified as Arfath Ahmed Khan of Risala Bazar. Based on his UPI transactions, the police identified a supplier in Bidar, Karnataka, as well as over 80 clients in Hyderabad. The police have launched a manhunt to nab the supplier. Acting on a tip-off, TGANB's Hyderabad team intercepted Khan's two-wheeler near Sadhana Mandir School in Risala Bazar, Bollarum, at around 5:30 pm on Friday. Due to his mother's meagre income as a tailor, Khan decided to earn easy money by selling ganja," said a TGANB official. Through a friend, he met Zareena Begum, a ganja supplier from Bidar, and started sourcing the contraband from her. Police said that his PhonePe records show 26 transfers totalling Rs 6 lakh to Begum and one payment to her son between Aug 2024 and June 2025. In July 2025, Khan paid Zareena Rs 60,000, and that month he received Rs 2.6 lakh from 49 local buyers via UPI payments. Police identified about 80 local buyers through Khan's phone payment transactions. Khan was produced before the court on Saturday and remanded to judicial custody under the NDPS Act. Fruit seller held for strangling former custom officer after stealing UP pin, siphoning money
Jaipur: A 31-year-old fruit seller was arrested Thursday for strangling an 88-year-old retired custom officer after stealing his PhonePe PIN and siphoning off nearly Rs 3 lakh from his account in Ramnagariya area. The accused, Kamlesh Kumar Sharma, who ran a fruit stall outside Lotus Villa Society in Jagatpura, allegedly recorded a video of the victim, Omprakash Khobar, entering his UPI PIN while paying for fruits. Over time, Sharma used the code to transfer money from Khobar's PhonePe account. When the victim noticed the unauthorised transactions and confronted him, Sharma lured him to his flat and killed him to silence him. The body was found in Flat No. 105 of the apartment on July 25. Initially, police suspected natural death due to the victim's age. However, scratch marks on the neck and the missing mobile phone raised suspicions. A post-mortem confirmed death by strangulation. Investigators recovered transaction alerts and call records indicating fund transfers from Khobar's PhonePe to Sharma's account. Further interrogation is underway to determine if others were involved, particularly in the money transfers. Sharma was operating his fruit stall outside the society for some time and was familiar to several residents. The victim, police said, lived alone in the apartment.

Coimbatore man gets double life term for murdering lover in 2017
The Fifth Additional District Court in Coimbatore on Thursday sentenced a man to double life imprisonment for murdering his lover aged 21 in 2017. Judge P.K. Sivakumar awarded the punishment to M. Prashanth, 35, a resident of Vijaya Lakshmi Nagar at Vinayagapuram near Saravanampatti in Coimbatore. As per the prosecution case, Prashanth had been in love with H. Rukshana, 21, a resident of Ponnu Nalli Konar Street at Kovilmedu in Coimbatore. Meanwhile, the girl's family started looking for marriage alliances for her, which annoyed Prashanth. According to the prosecution, Prashanth took Rukshana to Kallar near Mettupalayam for a leisure trip on October 16, 2017. Family members launched a search for the girl after she did not return home on the day. The family lodged a complaint with the Saibaba Colony police station on October 19 and a woman missing case was registered. The police found that Rukshana had contacted Prashanth, who had been working in a software company at Tidel Park in the city, on multiple occasions and on the day of her disappearance. The police questioned Prashanth, who confessed to have murdered Rukdhana by pushing her down from a steep terrain at Kallar following a quarrel and attacking her with a rock on her head. The woman's body was recovered a week after the murder and Prashanth was arrested for the crime. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to double life imprisonment for offences under Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) and one year jail term for Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code. The then Saibaba Colony police station inspector K.S. Saravanan investigated the case and Public Prosecutor S. Mohan Prabhu appeared for the prosecution during the trial.
