They secured a place in the playoffs.

Season 2 Glory (2024)
The second season saw a complete turnaround. Washington Freedom went on to clinch their maiden MLC title, defeating San Francisco Unicorns comprehensively in the final by a massive margin of 96 runs.

The triumph was led by a formidable performance from Travis Head, who was named Player of the Tournament. Head amassed 336 runs in 9 innings and finished as the second-highest run-getter in the tournament overall. Skipper
Steven Smith
was equally pivotal, scoring 336 runs at an impressive average of 56.00, and was named Man of the Match in the final.
In the bowling department, Saurabh Netravalkar once again delivered, picking up 15 wickets and continuing to be a key figure in their setup.
Rachin Ravindra also made a significant impact with the ball, claiming 12 wickets in the season.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
Despite their success, Washington Freedom face a few setbacks heading into the 2025 season. Travis Head is set to skip the tournament owing to his self-imposed cap of participating in only two franchise leagues per year while he remains an active Test cricketer. Additionally, Australia's scheduled Test series in the West Indies will also rule out Pat Cummins, who is contracted with the San Francisco Unicorns.
Freedom, however, has managed to retain its captain Steven Smith, although his full availability remains uncertain due to Australia's red-ball commitments. The franchise has retained the highest number of both domestic and international players among all MLC teams. Key overseas stars like Glenn Maxwell, Jack Edwards (Australia), and
Lockie Ferguson
(New Zealand) are all set to return for the title defence.
On the other hand, the team has released Akeal Hosein, Andrew Tye, and Travis Head ahead of the new season.
With a strong core and solid retention strategy, Washington Freedom will be aiming to overcome personnel challenges and continue their winning momentum in the 2025 season.

This KKR star cricketer, who earns ₹12 crore in IPL, worked as junior artist in Tamil film for ₹600

Cricket and films are the greatest pastimes in India, with fandoms bordering on obsession. So, it's only natural that once in a while, a cricket player will toe the line with acting (Sourav Ganguly, Sreesanth) either out of passion or need. There's one such star spin bowler from Shah Rukh Khan's IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders, who once worked as a junior artist for a Tamil film for ₹ 600. This Kolkata Knight Riders star cricketer dabbled in various fields before becoming a spinner. Varun Chakravarthy, aka CV Varun, discussed the various roles he dabbled in during a chat with the retired Test player R Ashwin on his YouTube channel. Now 33, Varun said he found his true calling for cricket at 26. He dabbled being a guitarist, architect, filmmaker and even an actor before that. While in college, Varun worked at an architectural firm, where he earned ₹ 14,000 per month. By the time he left, he had earned ₹ 18,000. At 24, he dabbled in filmmaking and decided to work as an assistant director. While working with director Suseenthiran in the 2014 Tamil film Jeeva, he made an appearance as a cricket on-screen. 'I signed as a junior artist for ₹ 600 per day,' he said. When Ashwin asked him how much his daily allowance is now as a cricketer, Varun replied with a smile, 'Right now it's $300 ( ₹ 25,000).' Varun said that he got the opportunity to play cricket on-screen as he would take part in Tennis ball tournaments. 'They used to announce that if you hit a six, you get ₹ 300. If you bowl a yorker, you'll get ₹ 200,' he said. From a man who once worked as a junior artist, Varun is now a star cricketer who earns ₹ 12 crore for the IPL season, according to a Koimoi report. Varun was born in 1991 in Bidar, Karnataka, to Vinod Chakravarthy, an ITS officer working for BSNL, and Malini, a housewife. His father is half Tamil and half Malayali, and his mother is Kannadiga. He gave up a job in architecture to pursue cricket as a profession. He came into the limelight during the 2018 Tamil Nadu Premier League. The same year, he was bought by Preity Zinta's Kings XI Punjab for the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL). In the 2020 IPL auction, he was bought by Shah Rukh's KKR team. Varun has won 8 Player of the Match awards in the IPL, one of the most by any bowler in the tournament.

Tribunal Revokes IPS Officer's Suspension Order Over Chinnaswamy Stadium Stampede

Last Updated: Days after being suspended, Vikash Kumar Vikash has approached the CAT, questioning the legality and rationale of the disciplinary action against him The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has revoked the suspension order of IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash who was suspended as Additional Commissioner (East) in the aftermath of the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede case in which 11 people were killed and several injured. The CAT also directed the government to review the suspension of two other officers involved in the case, with sources saying the officers were hopeful that their suspensions could also be withdrawn. The development comes just two days after the Centre formally approved the suspension of Vikash and two other senior IPS officers—B Dayananda [was Bengaluru police commissioner] and Shekhar— following the Karnataka government's recommendation to suspend the officers for lapses in crowd management. The tragedy during the June 4 victory celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinching the IPL 2025 trophy after 18 years saw the police pushed against the wall over mismanagement. Days after being suspended, Vikash has approached the CAT, questioning the legality and rationale of the disciplinary action against him. Vikash argued that the government's order 'lacks clarity on his individual responsibility in the incident and fails to establish any act of wilful negligence". News18 had also reported that in a letter dated June 4, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) MN Karibasvanna had warned of security concerns and flagged these to the department of personnel and administrative reforms (DPAR). The letter highlighted the potential for chaos given the team's immense popularity and the large gathering of fans expected. It further suggested that the employees at Vidhana Soudha should get a half-day leave and flagged a lack of CCTV cameras to monitor the crowd. The Siddaramaiah government, however, has washed its hands of the controversy, saying that the state administration had no role in organising the felicitation event that led to chaos and the loss of lives. Dismissing calls for his resignation over the incident, Siddaramaiah drew comparisons with similar tragedies in different states. 'A stampede took place at Kumbh Mela. When a bridge that was inaugurated by PM Modi collapsed that very day, leading to hundreds of deaths, did he resign? Did any of you demand his resignation? The Kumbh Mela saw the death of 50-60 people. Did any of you demand his resignation? Did he resign? Did the BJP even demand it then?" he said.

Bengaluru stampede: CAT quashes IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash's suspension order

The Bengaluru bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has annulled the Karnataka government's suspension of Inspector General of Police-rank IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash over the June 4 cricket stadium stampede, which resulted in the death of 11 Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans who had gathered to celebrate the cricket team's IPL victory. Vikash had challenged the June 5 suspension order, where he, along with Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, an officer of the rank of additional director general of police who was due to be promoted to the rank of director general of police, and deputy commissioner of police Shekar H Tekkannavar, were suspended. The CAT tribunal comprising Justice B K Shrivastava and Santhosh Mehra, which had reserved its orders on June 24, allowed the challenge on Tuesday during the pronouncement of its orders. 'The CAT has allowed the petition and quashed the order of suspension against Vikash Kumar. The tribunal has said that he is eligible for all requisite benefits,' Dhyan Chinappa, Vikash's advocate, said following the orders. The tribunal has also said that the orders in Vikash's case can be considered by the state government in the case of the two other suspended IPS officers as well. The CAT order is expected to facilitate the return of the three suspended IPS officers to the police department. On June 5, the Karnataka government suspended Dayananda, Vikash, Tekkannavar, C Balakrishna, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Cubbon Park, and A K Girish, Police Inspector, Cubbon Park, over the June 4 cricket stadium tragedy. Though the RCB CEO had informed Dayananda on June 3 about holding a victory parade and celebrations on June 4, 'the office of Police Commissioner failed to give written reply to the organizers, rejecting the permission on the grounds of lack of time to prepare for such a huge event', the government's suspension order of June 5 stated. The conduct of the IPS police officers was 'in gross violation of AIS (Conduct) Rules and that of the ACP and PI is in gross violation of Karnataka State Police (Disciplinary Proceedings) Rules, 1965,' the order further stated. The suspensions of the police officers had dealt a blow to the morale of the police department since the Karnataka government was also involved in organising the felicitation for the RCB team. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah later told senior police officers that he was only informed about one death. 'If the senior officers had given us the correct information immediately, the stadium programme could have been cancelled,' Siddaramaiah said at a senior police officers meeting on June 27 while referring to two events held on June 4 to felicitate the RCB at the government headquarters at the Vidhana Soudha at 4 pm and later at 5 pm at the M Chinnaswamy cricket stadium.
