Boomers, Opals defeat New Zealand in Trans-Tasman Throwdown openers
Adelaide 36ers captain Dejan Vasiljevic's perimeter brilliance in front of his home NBL audience and a third-quarter masterclass of smothering team defence have launched the Boomers to an 80-68 victory over New Zealand.
In the opening game of the inaugural Trans-Tasman Throwdown on Wednesday, Australia were behind the eight-ball in the opening two quarters in front of 8447 fans at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre before seizing total control with a 23-9 third term.
Vasiljevic (23 points) and Perth Wildcats guard Elijah Pepper (16) knocked down five three-pointers each in the first meeting between the two countries since the 2022 Asia Cup semi-finals in Jakarta, which the Boomers won, and the first bilateral series between the rivals since 2015.
'Really pleased with our defensive effort in the second half,' Australia coach Dean Vickerman said.
'Once we really sat down and slowed down their pace, we made it more difficult for them to put their feet in the keyway... There will be really good learnings from that one about how we get better as a group.'
New Zealand Breaker Reuben Te Rangi paced the Kiwis with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Melbourne United's Shea Ili contributed 12 points.
With former 36er and Chicago Bulls star Josh Giddey sitting courtside with the Atlanta Hawks' Dyson Daniels, voted the NBA's 2024-25 Most Improved Player, the Boomers were sluggish out of the blocks.

NRLW Magic Round in Newcastle begins with a historic draw after a fierce contest between the Bulldogs and Titans
Canterbury and the Titans have fought tooth and nail to secure the NRLW's first ever draw, splitting the premiership points on the back of a 14-14 score line. Kicking off the NRLW's inaugural Magic Round in very wet conditions in Newcastle, each side headed into the clash with a 2-2 record, and a point to prove at McDonald Jones Stadium. Locked at 14-14, both sides continually shot themselves in the foot, turning it over in the torrential rain before the siren rang to send the contest into golden point. The Bulldogs parked themselves in the opposition's red zone for the bulk of the extra period, skipper Tayla Preston's first attempt at a one-pointer wide before, and Chapman racing up to throw her off before her second snap. Neither side could find the field position in the second period, the siren ringing out to signal the first draw in the competition's eight-season history. Players were dropping like flies to start the contest, Gold Coast winger Lily Patston carried off after 90 seconds while Canterbury were momentarily left with a one-woman bench in the first ten minutes. A simple sweep saw Jaime Chapman swing to the left to put Georgia Grey over in the corner for the first-ever women's Magic Round try, before Natasha Penitani doubled the advantage a few minutes later, crashing over next to the sticks. Enter, Canterbury's halves. The Bulldogs No. 6 and 7 in Ash Quinlan and Preston dragged Canterbury back into the affair, albeit in different methods. Quinlan fired an absolute bullet through the air for winger Elizabeth MacGregor to put the blue and white on the board, the rookie crossing the line untouched. Veteran half Lauren Brown kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Titans, shaping to kick in-field before turning her body, putting a deft grubber through the line for Jasmine Solia to snatch a 14-4 halftime lead. Preston had the Bulldogs humming early in the second stanza, a brilliant 40/20 leading to another Quinlan bullet pass the next set, this time Monica Tagoia dotting down. The left-edge was humming for Canterbury, finding success again minutes later on the back of a simple shift, handing MacGregor her fourth try in just two NRLW games. It was a double whammy for the Titans, losing the lead as well as Solia, with the Bunker finding high contact from the edge forward in the lead up, leaving Solia in the sin bin and Tagoai on a medicab. The draw leaves both sides just outside the top four after five rounds, and despite the constant downpour, there's little doubt there's more magic to come this weekend.

Trainer Denim Wynen celebrates her first city success as new stable recruit Sunshine Law triumphs at Rosehill
Yulong's loss was Denim Wynen's gain as Sunshine Law delivered the young trainer her maiden city winner at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Wynen, 29, enjoyed the biggest moment of her career to date when her new edition handled the heavy conditions to prevail in the Congratulations James McDonald Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m). Sunshine Law had previously been trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald and raced in the silks of breeding powerhouse Yulong before being sold online to Wynen's connections for $85,000. 'I am so stoked,' Wynen said. 'Coming into today, I hate being too confident with people but in myself I knew I had quite a good horse coming here. 'The trackwork rider, after the first gallop she had on her, said she thinks she is quite a serious horse so for her to say that, I thought I have a nice horse.' Sunshine Law had won her last two starts for the Archibalds at Canberra and Hawkesbury but her latest success ensured her new owners for an immediate return on their investment. The daughter of Alabama Express banked just shy of her purchase price with an $82,500 winner's cheque. 'Credit to them, they picked it,' Wynen said. 'They rang me the day before and said they were looking at some tried horses online. 'They have been a big support to my stable in the last six months and bought some weanlings and wanted to get to the races sooner. 'They decided to go to the tried sales and picked up two nice horses from Yulong so I think we are going to have some fun with them.' 'It was a really good win,' Roper said. 'I thought she was feeling the pinch a bit the last 100m and I think she started to have a little think about it but the horse to her inside kept her going. 'It was a really good tough effort first-up today.' Wynen dipped her two in the water as a hobby trainer but has taken over the past two years and is building a small stable on the Central Coast. 'I had a hobby, just a couple of my own, but just two years for owners and I am loving it,' she said. 'I only have six in work, I do all the work myself, literally seven days morning and afternoon so it's a good number.' Headley Grange ($3.70) thrived in the tough going under the urging of Adam Hyeronimus as he surged away to score by two lengths from Adam Duggan 's Diamond Diesel ($20) while Pride's Estadio Mestalla ($5) was third. 'He is honest and genuine,' Pride said. 'I think people who like backing him, keep backing him because he turns up and wins when he gets the opportunity. 'I would be forgiving of him for his last start at Grafton when I really thought that track was too hard for him. 'I wouldn't run him on a surface that firm again, he enjoys tracks with the string out of them.'
