Alarms set as 'suspicious' Lions welcome Eagles

Yahoo22-03-2025
Chris Fagan will set his alarm for Brisbane's lunch date with West Coast, insistent the Eagles won't be easy pickings for the defending champions.
The Lions will unfurl their AFL premiership flag before midday on Sunday at the Gabba, with the first bounce at 12.10pm AEST.
Coach Fagan admitted the early start, in what's become the side's first home game this season after their postponed opening-round fixture, would hit differently.
"It changes my routine, geez, 12 o'clock," Fagan smirked.
"I can't remember the last time a game started that early. Right in the middle of the day, maximum heat.
"But we'll play in whatever situation is presented to us."
The Eagles were hammered by Gold Coast last weekend, the Suns' 87-point win their biggest in club history.
The visitors dominated the contested possession count (145-102), inside-50s (67-34) and clearances (50-33).
Compounding problems, All-Australian spearhead Jake Waterman will miss up to two weeks with a back issue that is causing pain in his calf.
But goalsneak Liam Ryan is back from a hamstring injury.
Eagles coach Andrew McQualter is demanding more around the contest against the Lions.
"You take last week with a grain of salt and (we're) expecting a way better version," Fagan said.
"We had a game against them last year in Perth, a hard fought, close game (the Lions won by 13)."
The Lions copped a 54-point thrashing from Port Adelaide in the first round of 2023 then beat Melbourne the following week.
"I'm pretty suspicious of round one results and we've been involved in that ourselves," Fagan said.
Small forward Kai Lohmann's ankle injury has created a chance for 19-year-old Will McLachlan to debut, while former Suns key forward Sam Day will play his first game for Brisbane after being delisted by Gold Coast last year.
Bruce Reville is also back in the fray while Charlie Cameron (calf) and Brandon Starcevich (concussion) won't play.
"Impressed us when he arrived last year (in the mid-season rookie draft) and contributed to a lot of scoring," Fagan said of McLachlan.
"He's a really good story ... couldn't force his way in (last season) but he's been right there amongst it and the injury to Kai Lohmann gives him the opportunity."
Day, in for Darcy Fort, is effectively the retired Joe Daniher's replacement, assisting Oscar McInerney in the ruck and providing a contest in the forward-50.
"He's different from Joe, a different sort of player, but he'll help us," Fagan said.

Luka Doncic agrees to a three-year $165 million contract extension through 2028 with the LA Lakers

Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, bypassing a chance at free agency next summer to build a long-term future with his new team. The deal keeps Doncic with Los Angeles through 2028. The Slovenian superstar had a player option for the 2026-27 season under his previous contract. A person with knowledge of the deal confirmed the terms to The Associated Press on Saturday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Lakers don't publicly announce the details of contracts. "Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud," Doncic wrote on social media. "Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning." The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks last February in a seismic trade for Anthony Davis. The five-time All-NBA selection and a five-time All-Star averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game last season while teaming up with LeBron James for 50 victories and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Los Angeles lost to Minnesota in the first round, but Doncic enjoyed his first months in Hollywood enough to commit to the Lakers. He will return this fall alongside James, who will begin his unprecedented 23rd NBA season. Doncic's growing comfort with the Lakers was already obvious in his offseason activity. He played a significant role in Los Angeles' successful bids to sign Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, persuading the two veterans to team up for the upcoming season. Doncic's extensive regimen of offseason conditioning work has also been well-documented after the Mavericks' questions about his physical commitment to the sport reportedly played a role in his shocking departure from Dallas.

Lions trade package that would land Micah Parsons in blockbuster deal with Cowboys

The door is slightly ajar for the Detroit Lions — and 30 other teams — to trade for Dallas Cowboys superstar linebacker, Micah Parsons. On Friday, Parsons took to social media to reveal that he has requested a trade. Before that, a report from The Athletic's Dianna Russini and Jon Machota said that Parsons and the Cowboys are no longer talking about a contract extension and that the relationship has been badly damaged. While it remains to be seen if the Cowboys will actually trade Parsons or if this is just another Myles Garrett-Cleveland Browns situation, analysts have already begun firing off possible trade packages for the four-time Pro Bowler. One of those packages comes from Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox, who suggested this trade for the Lions. Lions Receive: Edge Micah Parsons, 2026 5th-round pick Cowboys Receive: 2026 1st-round pick, 2026 2nd-round pick, 2027 1st-round pick, 2026 3rd-round pick, Edge Marcus Davenport "The Lions will be legitimate Super Bowl contenders this season if they can experience better injury fortune than they had a year ago. However, they still need a high-end edge-rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson and build a complete roster," Knox wrote. Related:Micah Parsons' dad once named Lions as preferred destination "To do it, Detroit might have to convince Hutchinson to take a bit less than Parsons and find a creative way to structure the two deals. With $51.1 million in cap space, though, the Lions could at least lay the groundwork for those contracts," he adds. That is an absolutely massive package of picks and is probably more than the Lions would actually have to give up. Even still, for a generational talent like Parsons, it would be well worth it for a Lions team eyeing its first Super Bowl. The Lions need more juice in their pass-rush. Davenport is too injury-prone to rely on as support for Aidan Hutchinson, who is coming off a season in which he suffered a significant injury. It's true that the Lions would have to pay both Hutchinson and Parsons enormous contracts, but if there's two players on the same team you can justify paying big money to, it would be those two if they were paired in Detroit. Having Parsons and Hutchinson in the same lineup would give Detroit the most dynamic pass-rushing duo in the NFL and would greatly increase the Lions' chances of winning the Super Bowl. Are there financial concerns with acquiring Parsons down the road? Of course, but with the Lions in win-now mode, trade for generational defensive talent first, ask questions later.
