DU to reserve PG seats for single girl child from 2025 in gender equity push
gender equity in higher education
,
Delhi University
has announced that it will extend its
single girl child quota
to postgraduate (PG) courses from the 2025-26 academic session.
Officials said the initiative will reserve one supernumerary seat in each PG programme for a woman candidate who is the only girl child in her family.
The quota already exists at the undergraduate (UG) level and was implemented in the 2023-24 admission cycle. With this extension, the benefit will now apply to all 77 PG programmes offered by the university, admissions to which are conducted through CUET-PG followed by the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS).

"With this new quota, DU hopes to foster an environment that values the contribution of girls, allowing them to advance their education without barriers. By offering this support, the university aims to make higher education more accessible and provide equal opportunities for all students," said a university official.
Delhi University already has a series of supernumerary quotas to support students from diverse backgrounds, including those for sports, persons with disabilities, orphans, and children and widows of armed forces personnel. Last year, 132 seats were allocated to orphans under a special quota introduced in the wake of Covid-19.

At the undergraduate level, 764 single girl child candidates were admitted across 69 DU colleges in 2024.
"DU is once again reaffirming its goal of ensuring equitable access to education for all segments of society," the official added.
