Bulgarian ruling party leader claims US-delivered F-16 jet defective

Washington, May 1 (UNI) Former Bulgarian Prime Minister and leader of the ruling GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) party Boyko Borisov has alleged that the first US-made F-16 fighter jet delivered to Bulgaria under a defense contract is non-operational, Bulgarian National Television reported on Wednesday.
Borisov made the remarks while criticizing Bulgarian President Rumen Radev's actions during the European People's Party congress in Valencia, Spain.
"He [Radev] quietly whispered to accompanying journalists that this new F-16 is broken and can't fly … The air force commander and Radev's close friend [Nikolay Rusev] should be fired immediately. How could we receive a broken aircraft for $100 million?" the former prime minister said.
In response, President Radev urged Borisov to influence the government to allocate more funds for F-16 maintenance, reminding that the purchase agreement was signed during Borisov's own administration in 2019.
In July 2019, the Bulgarian government signed a $1.26 billion contract to purchase eight F-16 Block 70 fighter jets from the United States. The original delivery schedule indicated that Bulgaria would receive the first jet by mid-2023. However, the timeline was delayed to 2025 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, Bulgaria also signed a contract for an additional eight F-16 jets.

Markets fall amid IT, FMCG earnings disappointment; Sensex down 543 points

Domestic equity benchmarks closed lower on Thursday, weighed down by selling in heavyweight stocks like Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, and IT majors. Investor caution prevailed amid ongoing India-US trade negotiations and mixed corporate earnings. The Sensex settled at 82,184, down 543 points, or 0.6 per cent, while the Nifty closed at 25,062, dropping 158 points, 0.6 per cent. The selloff erased ₹2.2 trillion from the total market capitalisation, which is now at ₹458 trillion. Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, and Infosys contributed most to the Sensex decline. IT stocks faced significant pressure after mid-tier firms, Coforge and Persistent Systems, reported weaker-than-expected quarterly results. The Nifty IT index plunged 2.2 per cent – its sharpest single-day fall since May 13 – despite Infosys beating earnings estimates. "IT firms show anaemic revenue growth and profit degrowth, making current valuations unsustainable. Minimal recruitment signals limited near-term upside. Without a dramatic turnaround, these valuations won't hold," said UR Bhat, Co-founder of Alphaniti Fintech. The market's cautious tone persisted even as India and the UK signed a free trade agreement, granting 99 per cent of Indian exports (textiles to engineering goods) tariff concessions. However, analysts noted limited immediate market reaction due to focus on earnings. "Initial optimism about the UK FTA briefly lifted pharma and textile stocks, but attention quickly shifted back to earnings," Bhat added. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, said, "Subdued Q1 performances dragged IT and FMCG stocks. While earnings are broadly in line, they don't justify India's premium 21 times price-to-earnings multiple. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net sellers of ₹2,134 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided support with net buying of ₹2,617 crore. Market breadth remained weak, with 2,517 declining stocks versus 1,542 gainers on the BSE. Looking ahead, Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research at Motilal Oswal Wealth Management, said: "We expect range-bound markets with stock-specific moves driven by Q1 earnings. Global cues, including UK FTA formalisation and India-US trade talks, will be closely monitored." The Indian markets have underperformed emerging market peers, with the Nifty declining 1.8 per cent even as the MSCI EM ex-Japan gained 4 per cent.

ED raids call centres in Chandigarh Tricity running tech support scam

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday said it had conducted midnight searches on multiple illegal call centres operating in the Chandigarh Tricity region. These centres were duping foreign nationals by offering fraudulent tech support services. According to the ED, the companies had created overseas counterparts to receive payments from unsuspecting customers through payment gateways. The funds were then routed to India through formal banking channels as well as hawala. While the firms advertised services such as web designing and fixed wireless internet, they did not disclose details of promoters or staff. Many employees lacked the technical expertise normally associated with software or BPO services, indicating that the operations were entirely clandestine. One such entity, FSAL Technologies Pvt Ltd, was found running a fake call centre through an overseas front named Bios Tech in the United States. It falsely claimed to provide support for Microsoft, HP printers, routers, and other hardware. However, its director, Faisal Rashid Peerzada, failed to produce any agreements or authorizations from Microsoft, HP, or Arlo to offer such services. Investigators found that FSAL was controlling the backend of Bios Tech's website and monitoring payments received from foreign customers. Another associate, Arshdeep, a friend of Faisal, was listed as the director of Bios Tech. 'Similarly, Terrasparq and Visionaire, operated by Sahu Jain, have been running similar tech scams since 2016. Jain's sister, Ms. Priya, owns a US-based company, CTS Mobility, which acted as the overseas counterpart. ED officials recovered emails and WhatsApp chats showing the creation of fake Microsoft popup alerts and periodic fraudulent credit card transactions from foreign customers for non-existent services,' said an ED statement. The websites of these companies claimed to offer services such as mobile device management, network and device management, and Device-as-a-Service (DaaS), but provided no promoter details. Photographs displayed on the websites portrayed large IT park offices, which were contrary to the reality. The ED has confirmed that further investigation is underway. The directors are likely to be summoned for questioning, and more action is expected as the probe into the multi-crore tech support fraud progresses.

India, UK sign landmark Free Trade Agreement

New Delhi/London, July 24 (UNI) India and UK today signed the landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) after three years of hectic parleys, bringing in the promise of a major boost to the economies of both countries. The Agreement was signed in London by Union Minister Piyush Goyal and his British counterpart Jonathan Reynolds in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a two-day visit to UK, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Prime Minister Modi described the Agreement as a ''plan for shared prosperity.'' ''The Agreement is not just an economic agreement but also the plan for a shared prosperity. New opportunities will emerge in the UK market for India's agricultural produce and processed food industry. This agreement will especially benefit Indian youth, farmers, fishermen and MSME sector. For people in India products made in UK will be available at reasonable and affordable prices," the Prime Minister said. The UK PM described the Agreement as a ''big win for Britain''. ''India deal is a big win for Britain that will improve people's lives,'' Mr Starmer said on X. ''A landmark deal with India means jobs, investment and growth here in the UK. It creates thousands of British jobs, unlocks new opportunities for businesses and puts money in the pockets of working people. That's our Plan for Change in action,'' he said. The agreement, okayed by the Union Cabinet early this week, includes lower tariffs on cars, clothing and footwear and jewellery and will involve reduced levies on British exports to India including on gin and whiskey, cosmetics and cars. The lower tariffs will make Indian exports cheaper and Indian manufacturers will gain access to the UK market for electric and hybrid vehicles. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said both countries had finalised the Agreement on May 6. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the FTA as a ''big win'' for farmers, ensuring duty-free exports on nearly 95 per cent of agricultural products. Duty-free access for about 99 per cent of Indian exports unlocks nearly 23 billion Dollars in opportunities for labour-intensive sectors, he said adding that artisans, weavers and daily-wage labourers employed in MSMEs would usher in a new phase of prosperity. He said the FTA is a big leap for women through improved access to finance and deeper integration into global value chains and will provide Indian consumers high quality goods at competitive prices.
