Former Patriots captain remains unsigned after surprising release

USA Today9 hours ago
One of the biggest offseason mysteries has been the lack of clarification on the future of former New England Patriots captain Ja'Whaun Bentley, who was released by the team back in March.
The arrival of newly-hired head coach Mike Vrabel came with sweeping changes for a team that still felt deeply rooted in the old Bill Belichick ways of doing things. Even Jerod Mayo's one-and-done run as coach felt like a chip off the old block given how closely he worked with the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach before getting promoted as his replacement.
Players like Bentley, Jonathan Jones, David Andrews, Joe Cardona and Deatrich Wise Jr. were the last remaining remnants of the old guard that Vrabel was clearly looking to move away from. Andrews decided to retire from football, but Jones, Cardona and Wise all found jobs elsewhere in the NFL, while Bentley remains the lone unsigned free agent.
Bentley suffered a season-ending torn pectoral muscle in Week 2 of the 2024 season. Unless he's run into some complications, one would think he'd be 100 percent and ready to go at this point. Bentley might not have been a scheme fit for Vrabel's vision in New England, but he is still one of the more talented linebackers in the league. If he's ready to go, surely, someone will come knocking.
With that said, Bentley might simply be playing the long game and waiting for the best opportunity to open up. The season hasn't started yet, and teams will still be looking to sign players throughout training camp.
As a free agent, Bentley will be in a position to pick the best possible opportunity for himself and his family.

Patrick Mahomes Shows Off Fourth of July Vacation 'Dad Bod' with Brittany In Photos Going Viral

Patrick Mahomes Shows Off Fourth of July Vacation 'Dad Bod' with Brittany In Photos Going Viral originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kansas City Chiefs leader Patrick Mahomes is a winner like no other when it comes today's NFL. ... and his pursuit of title success - he's led the Chiefs to five AFC titles and three Super Bowl wins - is proof of that. Advertisement Work ethic is also key to his Kansas City legacy. But a guy needs a day off once in awhile. So ... Patrick and wife Brittany Mahomes, recently took to social media to show going-viral footage of their offseason vacation. ... the post timed perfectly for the Fourth of July ... complete with All-American colors for the pics. Brittany appears to be lovingly checking our her All-Pro husband while Patrick flaunts his famous "dad bod.'' This side of their pals Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, the Mahomes rank as a top power couple in sports ... and maybe beyond. As entertainment world proof, note that Brittany currently has over 2.1 million followers on Instagram. Advertisement Meanwhile, Patrick is all about football, as he is planning to build on what the Chiefs did a year ago - Mahomes led the team to a 17-3 mark in the regular season before losing (badly) to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl - in the upcoming season. What might his numbers look like in 2025? Mahomes' stats should trend upward from last year. Are we talking MVP level - say, 5,250 yards, 41 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2023 when he won the individual honor? Maybe. But first ... some rest and relaxation before it all kicks off. Chiefs' Linebacker Labeled Most Promising Building Block in Kansas City

Chiefs' Linebacker Labeled Most Promising Building Block in Kansas City originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs' pass rush fell to near the bottom of the league in 2021 and needed help. General manager Brett Veach selected Purdue linebacker George Karlaftis at No. 30 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft to help Chris Jones and Frank Clark. Advertisement Karlaftis played so well that he made Clark expendable. Now, three years into his pro career, Bleacher Report thinks Karlaftis is the Chiefs' most promising building block ahead of the 2025 season. "When the Kansas City Chiefs defense takes the field, three-time All-Pro Chris Jones garners most of the attention at the line of scrimmage," B/R wrote. "However, George Karlaftis has earned respect with 93 pressures and 24.5 sacks in three seasons. After a 10.5-sack campaign in 2023, Karlaftis saw a slight drop-off in sack total with eight in the previous year, but he maintained an active presence in the pass rush, logging a career-high 37 pressures. "Karlaftis isn't generating the same amount of buzz as fellow 2022 first-rounders Travon Walker and Aidan Hutchinson in terms of extension talks. That said, he's taken some attention away from Jones as an effective three-down defender who can get to the quarterback and stop runs behind the line of scrimmage." Advertisement Karlaftis has posted 115 total tackles with 68 solo and 24 for loss and added 56 QB hits. He's added 15 passes defended, 24.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble across 49 games with 44 starts.
