Anwar, Modi Discuss Trade And Investment Potential, Proposed IIT Campus In Malaysia

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's meeting with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, held on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit here on Sunday (Monday morning in Malaysia), touched on trade and investment opportunities as well as the proposed establishment of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Malaysia.
'We discussed the significant potential for expanding strategic cooperation between Malaysia and India in various fields, including trade, investment, digital technology, and defence,' Anwar said in a statement released after their meeting.
He also welcomed Indian companies' interest in investing in future-oriented sectors in Malaysia such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and the aerospace industry.
'We are also committed to continuing to strengthen people-to-people relations through cooperation in the areas of culture, tourism, and education, which includes the proposal to set up the IIT campus in Malaysia,' he said.
IITs are a group of premier engineering and technology institutes in India.
Both leaders also emphasised the importance of ensuring regional peace and stability, and expressed support for just and peaceful resolutions to international issues such as Palestine and Jammu-Kashmir.
Anwar said Malaysia welcomed efforts to strengthen ASEAN–India relations with the ASEAN–India Summit scheduled to be held in October, in line with the spirit of cooperation for mutual benefit.
'May the strong ties between Malaysia and India continue to grow for the benefit and well-being of the people of both nations,' he added.

The recent extension of Azam Baki's tenure as MACC chief commissioner, the promotion of a junior officer (special branch director) to the level of IGP (Khalid Ismail), and now allegedly interfering in the judicial process show that PMX wants only 'yes' men or women in positions. The judiciary, the last pillar that holds this nation, will collapse if it is compromised by judges with no integrity. It is time an RCI be set up to investigate all the complaints. Rubio to make first Asia trip as Trump unveils tariffs on host and allies
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Malaysia this week for meetings of Southeast Asian Nations in his first trip to Asia as America's top diplomat, the State Department said on Monday, even as President Donald Trump announced hefty tariffs on the hosts and other regional partners and allies. The State Department billed the July 8–12 trip as a move to reaffirm Washington's commitment to the Indo-Pacific. Hours later, Trump said he would impose 25 per cent tariffs from August 1 on imports from Japan and South Korea, the key US regional allies and vital partners in countering China's growing might. Trump also announced plans for tariffs on Malaysia and five other countries in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, whose ministers Rubio will join for meetings in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia faces a 25 per cent tariff, Laos and Myanmar 40 per cent, Cambodia and US ally Thailand 36 per cent, and Indonesia 32 per cent. Rubio will seek to firm up US relationships with partners and allies unnerved by Trump's global tariff strategy. Trump's announcements seemed certain to make that task harder. The trip has been seen as part of a renewed US focus on the Indo-Pacific and an effort to look beyond conflicts in the Middle East and Europe that have consumed much of the Trump administration's attention. "Top topics that he's going to want to hit, obviously, are to reaffirm our commitment to East Asia, to Asean, to the Indo-Pacific, and not just ... for its own sake," a senior State Department official told reporters. "I think a key message that the secretary likes to deliver is that we're committed, and we prioritise it because it is in America's interests, right? It promotes American prosperity and it promotes American security." The official said Rubio would be prepared to discuss trade, including reiterating that the need to rebalance US trade relationships is significant and echoing messages from the White House and the US Trade Representative. Asean countries have been nervous about Trump's tariffs and questioned the willingness of his "America First" administration to fully engage diplomatically and economically with the region. "There is a hunger to be reassured that the US actually views the Indo-Pacific as the primary theatre of US interests, key to US national security," said Greg Poling, director of the Southeast Asia Programme at Washington's Centre for Strategic and International Studies. On Sunday, Trump said the US was close to finalising several trade pacts and would notify other countries by July 9 of higher tariff rates. He also sent a message to BRICS group of developing nations as its leaders met in Brazil, threatening an additional 10 per cent tariff on any that align themselves with "anti-American" policies. The BRICS countries include Indonesia, as well as China and India. Last week, Trump announced he had reached a trade agreement with important Southeast Asian partner and Asean member Vietnam and could reach one with India. But he cast doubt on a possible deal with Japan, which is not only Washington's main Asian ally, but a major investor in the US. Rubio has yet to visit Japan, or South Korea, the other main US ally in Northeast Asia, since taking office in January, even though Washington sees the Indo-Pacific as its main strategic priority given the perceived threat from China. South Korea's presidential security adviser Wi Sung-lac headed to Washington on Sunday for trade and defence talks, with Seoul seeking to head off US tariffs. He aims to meet with Rubio and discuss a possible summit between Trump and President Lee Jae Myung, who took office last month.

Anwar wraps up three-nation visit to boost trade and ties
RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim departed for home today after a series of official visits to three countries – Italy, France, and Brazil. The chartered flight from Malaysia Airlines carrying the premier and the Malaysian delegation departed the Galeao Air Force Base (BAGL) at 1pm local time (midnight Monday Malaysian time). This series of visits by the Prime Minister, starting with a three-day official visit to Italy, forms part of Malaysia's ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and promote economic cooperation at the global level. The visits to these major economic hubs – Rome, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro – were to strengthen Malaysia's diplomatic ties and trade relations with the respective nations. These three markets collectively recorded bilateral trade valued at RM50.91 billion (US$11.14 billion) last year. The Prime Minister was accompanied by a business delegation comprising representatives from major Malaysian corporations and innovative enterprises, including Petronas, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Maybank, FGV, YTL Power, and Sunway. Anwar's inaugural visit to Italy was undertaken at the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The visits were to further strengthen bilateral relations between the countries across a wide range of sectors. In Rome, the Prime Minister was accompanied by five Cabinet ministers, namely Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir was also part of the delegation. In Paris, the Prime Minister met with President Emmanuel Macron, with discussions focusing on trade, technology, and education, as well as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In addition to a roundtable with France's industrial giants, the Prime Minister also engaged with local Muslim leaders, met Malaysian citizens in France, and delivered a public lecture at Sorbonne University on July 4. After the Paris stopover, Anwar headed to Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th BRICS Summit upon invitation from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Malaysia's role as a BRICS Partner Country and Asean Chair for 2025 was to emphasise the importance of multilateralism based on law, governance of artificial intelligence, climate action, and global health, representing the aspirations of over 650 million Asean citizens.
