Gold Division Head: Egypt's Rate Cut Won't Affect Local Gold Prices
Ehab Wassef, head of the Gold and Precious Metals Division at the Federation of Egyptian Industries, said the Central Bank of Egypt's decision to cut interest rates by 100 basis points will not have an immediate effect on gold prices in the local market.
In the division's weekly report, Wassef explained that local gold prices remain tied to global trends, particularly the international price of gold per ounce. He noted that gold's recent increase in Egypt reflects a global rally, with international prices breaking past resistance levels and closing above $3,340 per ounce, nearing the $3,360 mark.
He stated that the rise in global gold prices has fully offset the recent decline in the U.S. dollar exchange rate in Egypt. Locally, the price of 21-karat gold, the most traded type, rose by 3.85% over the past week—an increase of EGP 175 per gram—closing at EGP 4,715 compared to EGP 4,540 at the start of the week.
Regarding investment behavior, Wassef noted that lower interest rates may reduce the appeal of bank savings certificates, potentially leading some investors to shift toward gold. However, he stressed that this kind of shift happens gradually and depends on sustained global momentum.
He added that the rate cut reflects improving economic indicators in Egypt, including reduced inflation, and supports broader reform efforts.

Finance minister unveils EGP 5bn cash payout for 2,000 exporters on 7 August
Ahmed Kouchouk, Minister of Finance, announced that around 2,000 exporting companies will receive approximately EGP 5bn in cash payments on 7 August. This payment represents the first instalment—equivalent to 50%—allocated under the new Cabinet-approved mechanism for settling overdue export support payments. Covering shipments up to the end of June 2024, these payments are made through the Export Development Fund as part of the government's plan to clear all arrears owed to exporters over four consecutive fiscal years starting from the current one. The initiative is designed to support the export sector by providing liquidity to help exporters boost their exports and enhance the global competitiveness of Egyptian products. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday, Kouchouk added that, due to strong demand from exporters, the ministry will reopen applications from 17 August to 4 September 2025. This window will allow companies holding certificates from the Export Development Fund to submit the required documents and benefit from the mechanism, with a second payment scheduled for 18 September. He further noted that the current fiscal year includes the largest-ever allocation for export support in the state budget, amounting to EGP 45bn. This will enable the reimbursement of export burdens for the current fiscal year within just three months of file completion, under the new mechanism adopted by the Cabinet to fully settle outstanding dues. This builds on earlier successful programmes launched since 2019, including the Immediate Cash Payment initiative in its seven phases, which benefited around 3,000 exporting companies with total payments of roughly EGP 70bn. Nevine Mansour, Advisor to the Minister of Finance for Economic Institutional Relations, clarified that the first instalment under the new mechanism will be disbursed through the National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, Banque du Caire, and the Export Development Bank of Egypt. She added that, in cooperation with the Central Bank and the banking sector, payments for companies that do not hold accounts at these four banks will be transferred to their accounts at other banks without any administrative fees, further streamlining the disbursement process.

Engineering exports hit record $3.1bn in H1 2025 — highest in sector's history
Egypt's engineering exports surged to an unprecedented $3.1 billion in the first half of 2025, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to Sherif El-Sayyad, Chairperson of the Engineering Export Council of Egypt (EECE). This figure represents the highest six-month export value ever recorded by the sector. El-Sayyad noted that June alone saw a 7% year-on-year rise in export value, reaching $475m, up from $445m in June 2024. He highlighted that this growth reflects the sector's sustained export momentum despite global headwinds and slowing demand in certain international markets. Several sub-sectors contributed to this strong performance, particularly cables, automotive components, electrical and electronic industries, home appliances, and transportation equipment. Notably, the metals sector achieved exceptional growth of over 260%, underscoring the improved global competitiveness of Egyptian products in this field. El-Sayyad added that engineering exports expanded significantly in key markets, with remarkable increases to European destinations including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Spain. The sector also recorded growth in Asian markets such as the UAE, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Azerbaijan, and China, alongside robust performance in African markets including Algeria, Kenya, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania, and the Central African Republic. The US market likewise witnessed notable gains. The Council Chairperson emphasised that these results reflect the competitiveness of Egyptian engineering industries on the global stage and support the sector's ability to meet its export targets for the second half of the year. He stressed the importance of maintaining export support programmes, expanding participation in trade missions and international exhibitions, and targeting new markets to sustain this positive trajectory. Mai Helmy, Executive Director of the Engineering Export Council of Egypt, expressed optimism about continued strong export performance through the end of 2025. She attributed this outlook to the council's efforts, including organising promotional events, participating in international exhibitions and trade missions, and implementing programmes to help small and medium-sized enterprises strengthen their export capacity. Helmy noted that the council's upcoming strategy will focus on expanding into promising African markets, especially where demand for Egyptian engineering products is growing. Additionally, the council aims to enter non-traditional markets in new regions worldwide to diversify the export base and reduce dependence on established destinations. She pointed out that current indicators remain encouraging, particularly given steady improvements across multiple sub-sectors within the engineering industries. These results, Helmy said, reflect the real capabilities of Egyptian companies and factories, which have demonstrated resilience and adaptability in response to global changes. Helmy concluded that the success of engineering exports is the product of close coordination between the government, the private sector, and export councils, highlighting the importance of continued collaboration to overcome challenges and unlock new opportunities in global markets.

Egypt exports first high-tech potato seeds to Uzbekistan after opening market
Egypt has exported its first shipment of locally produced, high-technology 'mini tuber' potato seeds to Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced on Wednesday , following recent efforts to open the Uzbek market. The head of the Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine, Mohamed El-Mensy, said the shipment was part of a directive from Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk to enhance Egypt's seed production capabilities and establish the country as a seed exporter. El-Mensy added that a plant health unit had been assigned to prepare the technical file for the exported seeds. He noted that a video conference was held between Egyptian and Uzbek officials, attended by the Uzbek ambassador in Cairo, and was followed by round-the-clock communication to finalise the file in time for Uzbekistan's planting season. He said that procedures were currently underway to export the remaining shipments. The move follows a visit to Egypt in late May by a high-level Uzbek delegation to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector. At the time, Minister Farouk had instructed various departments to facilitate cooperation, including organising intensive field visits for the delegation to agricultural projects, research centres, and farms to share expertise.
