Saudi Arabia takes bold decision to unlock full economic potential, diversify away from oil: Alibrahim
The country adopted a constructive approach based on innovative radical change, the minister said during a panel discussion at AlUla Emerging Markets Conference.
This approach stimulated innovation from top to bottom in the public sector and opened markets to innovators from within the Kingdom and globally.
There is progress and momentum and the Kingdom is on the right track, but the task is not yet complete, he noted.
"We will not accept the current situation, in which we see that we are working below our potential, which means that we are losing, and that this loss will accumulate over the years until it affects, in the future, the fundamentals, including family income,' Alibrahim added.
The minister also stated that the Kingdom has a high competitiveness that makes it a key part of global value chains. It also has a long-term strategy for artificial intelligence that has been updated to keep pace with recent developments and new challenges.

Madinah presents SDG progress at UN in New York
RIYADH: The Madinah Region Development Authority participated in the main session of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the UN headquarters in New York, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday. In the session, titled 'Transformation from the Ground Up: Acting at Local Level,' the authority highlighted Madinah's pioneering role and the Kingdom's leadership in localizing the Sustainable Development Goals. Abdulrahman Ibrahim, the authority's chief data and innovation officer, said Madinah had become a model for international best practices. Key initiatives include the 2023 Madinah City Voluntary Local Review — the first in the Kingdom and second in the Arab region; the 2024 State of Sustainable Development Report for Madinah Region — the first Voluntary Subnational Review in the Arab region; and the launch of the Atlas of Sustainable Development in Madinah City Neighborhoods, a global first for precise, neighborhood-level SDG assessment. The session also reviewed successful local and regional approaches to accelerating sustainable SDG solutions, discussing key enablers and opportunities to expand local action. The authority's participation, part of the Saudi delegation led by Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Alibrahim, underscores the Kingdom's commitment to sustainable development aligned with Vision 2030. The UN forum, running through to July 23, also featured dialogue sessions on global frameworks for resilient urban development and strategies to create value for cities through data-driven trends.

Madinah mayor to present SDG progress at UN
MADINAH: Madinah Region Development Authority is participating in the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York under the theme 'Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs.' The forum, running until July 23, brings together UN member states to review progress on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The authority's participation is part of the Kingdom's delegation, led by Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Alibrahim. This year's participation reflects the Kingdom's alignment of Vision 2030 principles with the global SDGs framework and highlights Madinah's role in localizing the SDGs and adopting the Quality of Life Index initiative. Fahad Albulihshi, Madinah mayor and CEO of the authority, will deliver the Kingdom's address at the Local and Regional Governments Forum during the UN event. His speech will focus on Madinah's role in localizing SDGs and the Kingdom's commitment to advancing SDG efforts at the local level, aligned with Vision 2030 goals. On the sidelines, the mayor will hold bilateral meetings with representatives of local and regional governments to discuss cooperation on the UN 2030 Agenda. Discussions will also address governance, inclusive services, and local investment in supporting SDG progress regionally.

Saudi industrial output rises 1.5% in May on mining, manufacturing gains: GASTAT
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's industrial production expanded 1.5 percent year on year in May, driven by growth in mining, quarrying, and manufacturing activities, official data showed. The Industrial Production Index reached 108.8 in May, rising 2.5 percent from April, according to preliminary figures from the General Authority for Statistics. The latest IPI figure, reflecting continued growth in the manufacturing sector, underscores Saudi Arabia's progress in its economic diversification efforts aimed at reducing its decades-long reliance on crude revenues. In its latest release, GASTAT stated: 'Preliminary results indicate a 1.5 percent increase in the Industrial Production Index in May 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year, supported by the rise in mining and quarrying activity, manufacturing activity and water supply, sewerage and waste management and remediation activities.' The release further added that the index of oil activities saw an annual rise of 0.5 percent in May, while non-oil activities increased by 3.8 percent. In May, another report released by GASTAT revealed that the Kingdom's gross domestic product grew by 2.7 percent year on year in the first quarter, driven by strong non-oil activity. Commenting on the GDP figures at the time, Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Al-Ibrahim, who also chairs GASTAT's board, noted that the contribution of non-oil activities to the Kingdom's economic output reached 53.2 percent — an increase of 5.7 percent from previous estimates. According to the latest GASTAT report, the sub-index of manufacturing activities increased by 0.9 percent year on year in May. This growth was driven by an increase in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products, which rose by 14 percent, and the manufacture of food products, which increased by 3.2 percent. GASTAT added that the sub-index of mining and quarrying activity rose by 2.1 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. 'Saudi Arabia increased its oil production to 9.18 million barrels per day in May 2025 compared to 8.99 million barrels per day in May 2024,' added GASTAT. The report further noted that electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply activity recorded an annual decrease of 7.7 percent in May, while water supply, sewerage, and waste management and remediation operations rose by 15.5 percent during the same period. On a monthly basis, manufacturing activity in Saudi Arabia increased by 2.3 percent, supported by growth in the production of coke and refined petroleum products, which rose by 1.9 percent. Compared to April, mining and quarrying activities in Saudi Arabia also increased by 2 percent in May. Overall, oil activities rose by 2 percent in May compared to the previous month, while non-oil activities increased by 3.9 percent during the same period.
