Terengganu JPV Seizes 28 Smuggled Goats Ahead Of Aidiladha
KUALA TERENGGANU, May 31 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu Department of Veterinary Services (JPV) seized 28 goats suspected to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country following the interception of a white Toyota Hiace van in Kampung Teris, Hulu Terengganu, at around 10am today.
Its director Dr Anun Man said the operation was the result of several days of surveillance by enforcement officers who had tracked the vehicle from Kampung Gong Manok in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan. The suspects were caught after a brief chase.
'The smugglers used a van to avoid detection, and its closed structure made it difficult for authorities to identify any suspicious activity,' he told a press conference here today, adding that the seized goats and van are estimated to be worth RM86,000.
Two male suspects in their 50s were arrested and are being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953, which carries a fine of up to RM15,000.
Dr Anun said the goats were likely intended for the Terengganu or national market, given the high demand for livestock ahead of Hari Raya Aidiladha next week.
He expressed concern that some of the animals showed signs of illness such as coughing, runny noses, and foaming at the mouth, raising fears of contagious diseases like foot and mouth disease (FMD).
'We want to ensure animals used for korban are healthy and safe, not diseased.
'Terengganu JPV will step up enforcement to prevent illegal livestock movement into the state, especially in the lead-up to Aidiladha,' he added.
So far this year, 13 such cases have been foiled, involving 78 cows, 46 sheep, and seven goats.

"The boat was found to be carrying 250 blue barrels containing 50,000 litres of petrol, 15 barrels containing 3,000 litres of diesel and 120 branded cylinders of gas. The skipper and crew of the boat, aged between 27 and 50, failed to produce valid travel documents.

Mother seeks transparent probe into daughter's death in school dormitory
SIPITANG: "I want a transparent, fair and just investigation." These were the words of Noraidah Lamat, the mother of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, who recently died after allegedly falling from the third floor of a school dormitory building. The incident involving the student from Sipitang has also been linked to bullying among students at the school. Noraidah, 45, a teacher, recounted that the last time she met her only daughter was during a school gotong-royong (communal work) programme on July 12. "On that Saturday (July 12), the school held a gotong-royong. My daughter really wanted me to attend. Before that, she had called using a public phone and said, 'Mama, please come'. "I joked with her that I'm not good at gotong-royong. But the next morning, I left Sipitang at about 9am. "Only a few people were there for the programme, so she was very happy. After the gotong-royong ended, we went straight back to Sipitang," she said. The following Sunday, she sent Zara back to the dormitory. "I didn't notice anything unusual; she was still her usual enthusiastic self," she said. Noraidah further said that on the same Saturday, Zara spent the evening at the Esplanade Public Park playing games with her friend until 7pm. "I picked them up after that and we went home. The next day, I sent her back to the hostel. "When we were about to leave for the dorm, she said she wanted to go back a bit later than usual. But I didn't suspect anything. Around 1pm, I told her we had to leave. The latest she could arrive was by 3.30pm," she said when met at her home today. Noraidah also recalled that on Sunday, before returning to the dorm, Zara cooked egg bread. "That was the last meal she brought and cooked at my house. I found it strange at the time. She cooked it for us," she said. Originally from Kampung Naluyan, Noraidah expressed hope that the investigation into her daughter's death would be carried out transparently and fairly. Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, who visited Noraidah today, also presented a RM10,000 contribution from the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS), in addition to other cash assistance. Also present were Qhazanah Sabah Berhad chairman and Sindumin assemblyman, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, and Yayasan Sabah director, Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar. Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, in a separate development, expressed condolences and visited the family at the hospital to ensure all their needs were met and their welfare looked after. In a statement, she said the Education Ministry (KPM) would fully cooperate with the authorities in the ongoing investigation. Papar police chief Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka had said police were conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of Zara's death.

Actor files police report over defamatory social media post
KUALA LUMPUR: Police received a report from a local actor and singer over an alleged defamatory and provocative social media post made on the 'Threads' platform. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief, Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, confirmed this with the New Straits Times, adding that the post was claimed to have damaged the complainant's reputation. "The report was filed at 4.12pm on July 18 over a post by the owner of a social media account, which allegedly contained slanderous, provocative, and seditious elements. "The post was made publicly and is believed to have the potential to tarnish the complainant's image and reputation," he said. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which covers the misuse of network facilities. Those convicted under Section 500 could be liable for a maximum two years' jail, a fine, or both. Section 233 stipulates a maximum fine of RM500,000 or two years' jail or both if found guilty, as well as a further fine of RM5,000 for each day the offence continues after conviction. Usuf said that this case is not related to the ongoing investigation involving local artiste Shila Amzah. "This case has no connection to the Shila Amzah matter," he said, addressing speculation linking the two.
