KOTA KINABALU (July 19): Siti Nur Hanisah Omar Hashim, a 20-year-old student of Early Childhood Education at Keningau Vocational College (KVC), is one of the 50 finalists for the Global Student Prize 2025, which offers a total prize of USD100,000 (RM400,000) to one winner.
The award, sponsored by the UK-based Varkey Foundation and Chegg.org, is considered the most prestigious student award in the world.
In 2025, the award received 11,000 nominations, and Hanisah is the only Malaysian to qualify as a finalist for this award.
This list of 50 nominees was announced officially on social media and website of Varkey Foundation on July 17.
Hanisah was selected as a finalist for her achievements, contributions and impact on other students and within the education community.
She is the founder of a social enterprise called Mearpet, which recycles used clothing and stuffed toys into puppets used to educate and entertain children.
This project has won numerous awards both locally and internationally, including RM3,000 in prize money through the Pitchbah competition organized by the OOZE youth club in 2023, as well as the YouthMADE Festival Amplify Grant from the US-based Digital Promise in 2025.
It was also featured on the DidikTV KPM television channel in early 2025.
Hanisah has organized social enterprise workshops and competitions at the college, which have inspired many students to develop their own social projects such as sign language tutoring classes, food waste reduction campaigns, and toy innovations made from recycled materials.
These students have won several competitions, including the Social Project Challenge hosted by myHarapan and Yayasan Telekom Malaysia. Hanisah is also an outstanding academic achiever, consistently receiving the Best Student Award every year. She is also the former vice president of the college's student council.
Other than the Mearpet project, she has also initiated a Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for vocational college students who plan to pursue tertiary education as well as led a virtual internationalization learning session that connects students and teachers from different countries.
The college director, Lumang anak Lang, expressed pride in Hanisah's achievement, stating that this success is proof that vocational colleges under the Malaysian Ministry of Education are capable and committed to producing skilled, competent, ambitious students who contribute to society.

Boeing buy a corporate decision, says Tengku Zafrul

PUTRAJAYA: The recent purchase of Boeing aircraft by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is a corporate decision, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz ( pic ). "The purchase of the aircraft was a strategic business decision by MAG and was financed using company funds and not the people's tax money," said the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister. He added in a post on X that the plan to purchase the Boeing aircraft was announced as early as March 2025, well before US President Donald Trump's announcement of elevated tariffs on Malaysian goods. Tengku Zafrul then said that Malaysia's strategy in highlighting major corporate purchases from the United States - including the Boeing order - played a role in ongoing tariff negotiations with Washington. "These purchases helped demonstrate that Malaysia is also a significant buyer of US products, not merely an exporter. We are not buying just because we want to reduce tariffs,' he said. "This approach showed the US that we were also a big buyer of their products, and ultimately convinced them to lower our export tariffs from 25% to 19%," added Tengku Zafrul. He hailed the outcome as a result of "careful consultation" that preserved both national and corporate interests.

Malaysia aviation group's Boeing purchase funded by company, not taxpayers

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) acquisition of Boeing aircraft is a pre-planned business decision fully funded by the company, not taxpayers' money, as clarified by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Responding to criticism, Tengku Zafrul emphasised that the purchase was announced in March, well before the US imposed new import tariffs. 'What does this purchase have to do with tariff negotiations?' he questioned in a post on X. The US introduced tariffs to address trade deficits, prompting Malaysia to highlight major planned purchases, including MAG's Boeing order. 'We are not making the purchase just to reduce tariffs,' he stated, adding that the move helped lower US tariffs on Malaysian goods from 25% to 19%. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier confirmed MAG's order for 30 Boeing 737 aircraft, with deliveries expected by 2030. – Bernama

Our commodities remain competitive even with tariffs, says Johari

JOHOR BARU: The United States' 19% tariff on Malaysian imports will not affect the competitiveness of the country's commodities in global markets, says Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani (pic). The Plantation and Commodities Minister said this was because the tariff for Malaysia remains competitive compared to other Asean nations, including Indonesia, which also faces the same rate. 'The 19% tariff imposed by the United States on Malaysia is among the lowest in Asean countries, and even Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, is subject to the same tariff rate. 'In the context of palm oil, Indonesia is the largest producer and we are number two. But Indonesia is also subject to 19% like Malaysia, so there is no problem,' he told reporters after the Pasir Gudang Umno division annual general meeting here. On Aug 1, US President Donald Trump announced the 19% tariff for Malaysian goods entering the United States, down from an earlier rate of 25%. The new tariff structure takes effect in seven days and applies to all goods with limited exceptions for shipments already in transit. Besides Indonesia and Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia have also been slapped with a 19% tariff. On an unrelated matter, Johari, who is also Umno vice-president, said the party needs to adopt a more progressive and inclusive mindset to stay relevant, particularly in reaching out to younger Malaysians. He said youth engagement must be prioritised, since young voters are expected to make up 40% of the electorate across parliamentary constituencies in the 16th General Election (GE16). 'This is not a small number. Their thinking is different. Many are highly educated, with degrees, Master's and even PhDs. 'They evaluate candidates based on substance, not just party loyalty. 'To win the hearts of this group, we must think differently, act differently, and truly listen to what they want,' he said. He added that the party must be willing to embrace reform and create space for new ideas, including those brought forward by younger members.
