How to save money on your supermarket shop THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop. You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they've been reduced. If the food is fresh, you'll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time. Making a list should also save you money, as you'll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket. Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too. This means ditching "finest" or "luxury" products and instead going for "own" or value" type of lines. Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they're misshapen or imperfect. For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50. If you're on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too. Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund. When: Sundays. Where: Zizzi What: One free Bambini meal (for kids under 12 years old) per adult's main course. Max 6 codes per table, show your code before ordering. When: Every day, 21st July to 5th September (excluding Saturdays). Breakfast freebies for kids: Get the day off to a delicious start at a great price with these restaurants. Where: Beefeater What: Two kids under 16 eat breakfast free for every adult unlimited breakfast costing £10.99 When: Until 10.30am weekdays and 11am weekends Where: Brewers Fayre What: Two kids under 16 eat free with every adult breakfast, plus you can get a 3 course kids menu for just £6.49 When: Breakfast is 6:30am-10:30am on weekdays and 7am-11am on the weekend. Marks and Spencer's £25 crossbody bag rivals £630 Toteme designer version
Marks and Spencer is well-known for its fashion ranges, and there may be a new favourite in stock as the retailer's Faux Leather Sling Cross-Body Bag is a hit with shoppers Marks and Spencer is turning heads with a new crossbody bag that bears a strong resemblance to a high-end designer version — but at a much more wallet-friendly price. The Faux Leather Sling Cross-Body Bag, available exclusively in chocolate brown and priced at just £25, has drawn comparisons to a similar design by luxury brand TOTEME. Though it's a fraction of the cost, the M&S version mimics many features of the designer bag, including its asymmetrical shape, gold-tone hardware, zip closure, and crossbody strap with a suede-effect finish. There are, of course, a few key differences. The M&S bag has a slightly thicker strap and is made from faux materials, while the TOTEME version uses genuine leather and suede. Still, the savings are significant — with the designer option retailing for around £630, shoppers could save over £600 by choosing the high-street alternative. Marks and Spencer also offers a range of other stylish bags at varying price points, including the Straw Shoulder Bag (£55), Faux Leather Woven Shoulder Strap Bag (£45), and Faux Leather Woven Clutch Bag (£35). Looking beyond M&S, there are other budget-friendly options on the market too. Next stocks the Bone Leather Fringe Cross-Body Bag for £35, New Look offers a Bright Red Quilted Faux Leather Mini Crossbody Bag (£21.99), and River Island has a Cream Metal Handle Quilted Tote for £36. The M&S sling bag has received plenty of praise online. One happy customer wrote: "Lovely bag. Great bag. It's very good quality and will go with so many outfits." Another said: "Perfect bag! Fits so much, easy to wear, great colour." A third shopper commented: "Excellent bag for wandering round on holiday. Held all I needed. Excellent quality. Looks like leather." However, not all feedback has been glowing. A few customers mentioned that while the sling bag looks stylish, the faux suede material felt a bit cheap. One review read: "This bag does look good, but it feels cheap. The faux suede material is very lightweight and just doesn't feel very nice. A return from me." Another noted: "Nice shape bag which can hold a fair amount — keys, glasses, etc — but feels cheap. Kept it because I loved the unusual shape." Despite some mixed reviews, the majority of customers have been impressed. One reviewer summed it up by saying: "Love this bag. Looks great and easy to wear. Compact but big enough to carry a decent amount. Also has a handy zipped inner pocket." Another added: "Really lovely crossbody bag, fits just the right amount in. Lovely material feel and comfortable to wear." For those after the designer look without the hefty price tag, the £25 M&S crossbody bag offers serious style and impressive savings, reports the Daily Record.

Asda to put slow staff on training courses as it battles crisis
Asda is preparing to put its slowest workers on training courses as it steps up a drive to win back customers. The supermarket will look at data on how quickly staff can pick and pack orders for home delivery, as well as if they are putting the correct items in deliveries and making appropriate substitutions. The lowest-performing staff in Asda's home shopping team will be given coaching to make them work more efficiently under the supermarket's plans. Training selection will also be based on other performance metrics Asda tracks. It has suggested this could mean as many as one in five workers will be asked to participate in the training course at any given time. It has similar performance programmes already in place for its drivers. A spokesman for Asda said: 'This proposal to introduce additional coaching to our home shopping colleagues will provide an opportunity for us to engage earlier with colleagues to understand any concerns that they may have or support that they require to help them excel in their roles and deliver outstanding service to our customers. 'This proposal would not introduce any additional targets for our colleagues and does not replace the performance improvement processes we already have in place.' It comes amid a wider push at supermarkets to boost productivity. Last week it emerged that rival Morrisons was stopping shop floor staff from going into stockrooms to remove 'idle time' from the working day. Tesco banned shop floor staff from wearing headphones at work last year under its uniform policy. Bullying fears However, Asda's plans threaten to spark a row with union bosses. This week, the GMB voiced concerns to members over the proposals, saying the approach to coach workers due to their performance would have a 'dramatic impact on colleague wellbeing and workplace stress'. It argued that plans to put as many as 20pc of staff on training programmes would be an 'unnecessary target that will lead to managers bullying colleagues and potentially discriminating against those least able to hit certain targets due to underlying medical or age-related factors'. It has called for Asda to make 'a periodic, randomised selection' of workers to coach rather than doing it based off their individual performance. The GMB said the supermarket should also 'monitor demographics'. It has asked Asda to revise the proposals. Asda executives have been racing to improve standards in stores as the supermarket battles to win back customers. Allan Leighton, who took over as chairman in November, has been funnelling more investment into modernising stores. In May, he said the change in stores had been 'noticeable', with more products on shelves at times when customers were searching for them. It follows years of decline at the supermarket, which has been struggling since its debt-fuelled takeover by private equity firm KKR and the Issa brothers. The most recent figures from Kantar showed its market share slipped from 12.5pc to 11.9pc in the year to the middle of June. At the time of its takeover in 2021, its market share stood at 15pc.
