LuLu IPO to drive active expansion, says top executive
According to Dr Mohamed Althaf, director, LuLu Group International, LuLu's milestone move at the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) has cemented regional trust in LuLu, while empowering the retail giant 'to pursue a bolder, more ambitious trajectory'.
'Our company went public. At some point in our business, we realised that it's time we should share our growth and prosperity with the region that has contributed and enabled our growth,' Dr Althaf told Gulf Times, describing the IPO as 'wonderful' and underscored its success in attracting major sovereign investors from across the region.
According to Dr Althaf, the IPO provides LuLu with enhanced opportunities for active expansion, while maintaining its core business model. 'Structurally, fundamentally, our business model is not going to change,' he emphasised, adding that 'what will happen with the IPO is that maybe our expansions will become even more active. We believe that because we have a growth story to meet'.
Dr Althaf further noted that the IPO is expected to introduce a shift in the company's governance structure, making it 'far more accountable and transparent'. This accountability and transparency, as well as the financial freedom brought by the IPO, will enable LuLu to expand its footprint into new markets while reinforcing its commitment to Qatar and the region, Dr Althaf pointed out.
'The IPO gives us the freedom and the responsibility that we should continue to invest in our business, stay focused, expand our footprint to markets, and stay committed to countries like Qatar in the region,' Dr Althaf further explained, stressing that LuLu remains deeply aligned with its host nation's development goals.
Furthermore, Dr Althaf connected the IPO to LuLu's broader vision of innovation and sustainability. He noted that the company is actively leveraging digital transformation, cloud-based technologies, and AI tools to boost efficiency and achieve sustainability goals. He cited advancements in areas like cold chain management, energy reduction, and e-commerce as examples of LuLu's commitment to progress.
'We will continue to invest in Qatar. We will continue to expand in Qatar. We will do experiments and move ahead,' emphasised Dr Althaf, who reaffirmed the company's dedication to its host nation and the region.
Dr Althaf further pointed out that the IPO marks a transformative phase for LuLu Retail, paving the way for active expansions, greater accountability, and a bold vision for sustained growth.
On its website, LuLu Retail announced that the 'IPO raised gross proceeds of AED6.32bn making it the largest offering in the UAE in 2024 to date. The offering saw aggregate demand of over AED135bn from local, regional, and international investors, a record for a non-government UAE IPO over the past 10 years, and an oversubscription level of more than 25 times across all tranches (excluding Cornerstone Investors). Cornerstone investors included leading sovereign and institutional investors from across the GCC and beyond'.

Hong Kong to regain IPO crown this year, say PwC and Deloitte
Hong Kong is expected to lead the world in IPO financing this year despite uncertainty from geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs, accountancy giant PwC said on Wednesday. The Chinese financial hub's capital market has rebounded strongly this year, with dozens of Chinese companies piling into the city to raise overseas capital despite regulatory pressure from Beijing and uncertainty over its national security laws. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) said its statistics suggest nearly 100 companies will raise at least HK$200 billion ($25.5 billion) in Hong Kong this year. It said Hong Kong's IPO wave has benefited largely from policy support from the Chinese government and optimised listing rules by Hong Kong regulators that include streamlining approval processes. "The improved market liquidity and rising international investor demand for core Chinese assets also drove market activity," PwC's Hong Kong capital markets leader Eddie Wong said in a note. The Hong Kong stock exchange welcomed 44 IPOs by the end of June, according to PwC. "We expect 2025 to be the most active fundraising year for IPOs in the past four years," said Diamantina Leong, PwC's Hong Kong capital markets services partner. PwC said total proceeds raised in Hong Kong jumped 701 percent to HK$107.1 billion ($13.7 billion) compared to the same period last year. In comparison, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have raised HK$55.3 billion ($7.0 billion) and HK$71.9 billion ($9.2 billion) in IPOs respectively so far this year, it said. Hong Kong's IPO boom is expected to continue into the first half of next year, Wong told reporters at a presentation. Data from the Hong Kong stock exchange showed it is processing more than 170 listing applications. "We expect strong momentum to continue, supported by several mega deals," Wong said. Many of the world's biggest fund-raisings by Chinese companies, including battery giant CATL, pharmaceutical firm Jiangsu Hengrui and soy sauce maker Foshan Haitian, kept up the buzz in Hong Kong's capital markets. Consulting firm Deloitte also forecast in a June report that Hong Kong would be the IPO leader this year, although its analysts warned that "adverse geopolitical or macroeconomic disruptions" could constrain optimism. Chinese e-commerce titan Shein is switching to Hong Kong to complete its debut after failing to list in New York and London, Bloomberg reported this year. Hong Kong hopes to become the preferred listing platform for international companies, "especially those that find it challenging to access capital markets in the US or Europe", the city's financial secretary Paul Chan said last month.

Kenya looks to privatise state assets to draw private-sector investments, says President Ruto
Kenya is planning to privatise some state assets via initial public offerings in order to bring in more private sector investment, President William Ruto said in remarks at the London Stock Exchange on Wednesday. The government plans to start with listing the Kenya Pipeline Company via an IPO on the Nairobi Securities Exchange this year, Ruto said. "We are committed to a structured, time-sensitive programme that identifies and prepares a robust pipeline of key government assets to be privatised through the stock exchange or improved through private sector participation," he said. Ruto also said that well-functioning domestic capital markets could reduce reliance on external debt. Kenya has been seeking new sources of funding since deadly nationwide protests last summer forced it to pursue austerity measures and scrap planned tax hikes worth more than 346 billion Kenyan shillings ($2.68 billion). Separately, at the Africa Debate event later on Wednesday, Ruto said that following shocks such as U.S. President Donald Trump's elimination of USAID this year, Kenya is working to rely on its own resources, and private investments, rather than "resources that we do not have any control over." He cited plans to partner with the private sector to provide hospital equipment on a fee-per-use basis and said Kenya had raised $1.3 billion by securitising assets such as roads to raise funding. "We are now going to be listing some of those bonds in the securities exchange so other investors can have a bite of the cherry," he said.
