‘It's been pretty miserable': New Cowboys location prompts resident complaints
Robert Scobel and his girlfriend live on the other side of downtown from Stampede Park, in the west end. They say it's traditionally been a quiet community with families and retirees, but this year they've got a new, partying neighbour.
'It's been pretty miserable; it's been like someone has just driven up with a really loud stereo system in their car, you know, with the windows rattling, except they don't leave,' says Scobel.
'It's been constant, pretty much every night.'
This is the first year Cowboys Music Festival is operating in its new location at Cowboys Park, formally Shaw Millennium Park. While some fans say it's bigger and better than ever, drawing acts they've been waiting to see, those who live across the street aren't happy with the move.

'I haven't been able to sleep. The noise generally doesn't quiet until at least 1:30 at night, sometimes much later than that,' says Scobel.
'And then there's noise not necessarily associated with the concertl; sometimes people continue the party out in the street.'
The City of Calgary announced the 10-year partnership with Cowboys last July with public engagement opportunities in April of this year, but Scobel says, as a resident, his concerns have been ignored.

'I reached out to the city when this was announced, and I never heard anything back. I'm trying to file noise complaints, and my neighbours are as well, to let the city know that this is being disruptive to a lot of people's lives.'
Ward 7 Coun. Terry Wong says his office has only received 11 emails about the tent, adding roughly half have been about the noise, while the rest are about crowd control. Residents contacting him live in West Downtown and as far away as West Hillhurst on the other side of the river.
'I'm surprised we haven't gotten more but I think people are accepting it,' says Wong. 'We need to appreciate this is Stampede time, this is an event time, not to say everyone enjoys it but it's something that puts on a great show for the world.'

Cowboys Music Festival has received a noise bylaw exemption for Stampede. The tent can play music at 85db until 1:30 a.m., at which point it must be turned down to 60db and shut off at 2 a.m. Wong acknowledges the sound travels and can permeate up into apartment buildings, but hopes residents in the area will understand it is for a finite amount of time.
'If you go inside, guaranteed you're going to sit in 90 to 100db, but when you stand outside the sound levels are at 82db and the further away you go it drops down.'
But Scobel and his girlfriend are worried it won't just be for 10 days in July. With the sponsorship agreement set for the next decade, billing the park as a festival and event space that could host up to 100,000 people annually, the couple is worried their quiet corner of downtown is going to get a lot louder.
'(If it's 10 years) we look at leaving,' says Scobel.
'This is extremely disruptive to the neighbourhood… we're really worried it's actually going to get worse instead of better going forward.'

'You just fall in love with rodeo': Longtime Stampede cameraman reflects on 48 years
Dennis Genereux has seen it all in his 48 years behind the camera at the Stampede Rodeo. Article content 'You never know what's going to happen, so you have to have total concentration,' he said. Article content Article content Genereux says one of the most memorable moments of his career was the iconic showdown for the 1986 Stampede bareback championship, between Steve Dunham and Robin Burwash. Article content 'They tied. Well, you got to have a runoff for the money, right? So they had to ride a second horse — damned if they didn't tie again,' Genereux said. Article content Article content 'Of course, they put so much into it, because you're riding for big money. The two of them went off into a corner of the chute, talked for a minute and said, 'To heck with this, we're going to share.' ' Article content Article content Article content That's just one of many incredible moments Genereux has witnessed from behind the camera. Article content 'There are stories out there that would break your heart. It's so friendly, so good, so honest — they're just super people,' he said. Article content The excitement of capturing those unexpected moments is what's kept Genereux coming back year after year. Article content 'It's sometimes just so amazing out there,' he said. 'The challenge of trying to capture that little instant in time is so important to me. You never stop learning when you're working here.' Article content Throughout his career as a freelance cameraman, Genereux has done a little bit of everything, but not everything comes with the same challenge or excitement. Article content Article content 'I did 47 years of hockey,' he said 'It's the same thing over and over. After that amount of time, I wasn't thinking about doing hockey. It was mostly muscle memory.' Article content Genereux said the people he meets at the Stampede each year have also contributed to his love for capturing the sport. Article content 'You just kind of fall in love with rodeo,' he said. 'The people are so nice, so accommodating. The stock handlers in the back, the cowboys that are out there doing the show — they're real people, real down to earth, and there's no BS.' Article content Article content Genereux's love of the rodeo has also become a family affair. His son, Kal, has been doing camera work at the rodeo for about 30 years, and this year, his grandson was hired as a television assistant. Article content 'My grandson came here last year to help us tear this out on the Monday after the Stampede is over,' Genereux said. 'It's a gruelling, dirty, ugly job — those cables are not covered in just dirt — but he enjoyed it. We can't keep him away now.'

Kanye West accused of sexual assault by former assistant
NOTE: The following article contains disturbing details and video footage. Please read at your own discretion. Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, is facing new allegations from a former personal assistant. Lauren Pisciotta, who worked for West from 2021 to 2023, has filed a second amended complaint in her lawsuit against the 48-year-old rapper after previously accusing him of sexual harassment and wrongful termination. The new filing, viewed by People, accuses West of sexual assault, battery, sex trafficking, stalking and false imprisonment, among other allegations. In the complaint, Pisciotta claims that 'Ye subjected Ms. Pisciotta to obscene comments about her body, demanded she wear tight fitting clothing, groped her on a regular basis, forced her to watch Ye perform sexual acts with other women, sent her sexually explicit pictures and demanded she do the same, and repeatedly demanded that she join his sexual encounters, which she refused.' Story continues below advertisement The filing also alleges that West once 'attempted to vaginally penetrate Ms. Pisciotta with his fingers' and 'orally raped her without her consent' while she was employed by him. A legal representative for West previously told Rolling Stone that Pisciotta was 'terminated for being unqualified, demanding unreasonable sums of money (including a $4 million annual salary) and numerous documented incidents of her lascivious, unhinged conduct.' The rep also denied her 'baseless' allegations and accused the former employee of 'blackmail and extortion.' Pisciotta's latest filing also accuses West of forcibly kissing her on the mouth and forcibly grabbing her by the throat. It also alleges that West 'offered someone the opportunity to have sex' with Pisciotta 'in exchange for allowing Ye to have sex with' that person's significant other. 3:55 Kanye West storms out of interview with Piers Morgan The complaint further accuses the rapper of sex trafficking, alleging that he made 'fraudulent promises of career advancement' in exchange for sexual acts. Story continues below advertisement 'Ye terrorized and dominated his employee, Ms. Pisciotta's life for approximately two years,' the legal document said, 'all under the pretense of offering serious career advancement opportunities in the music and fashion industry.' 'Within approximately one week of filing her original summons and complaint in this action, Ms. Pisciotta was bombarded with unwanted, harassing, and alarming visits from law enforcement and government agencies who claimed to be investigating various reports, such as child abuse, and searched her home and personal effects,' the filing reads. Pisciotta is requesting general damages to be determined by trial, past and future earnings in an amount determined at trial, lawyers' fees, punitive and exemplary damages and whatever relief 'the Court may deem proper.' The new filing marks the latest legal drama West faces, adding to a growing list of controversies surrounding the rapper. Earlier this month, West was barred from entering Australia following the release of his pro-Nazi song Heil Hitler. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said West had been travelling for years to Australia, where his wife, Bianca Censori, was born. Her family lives in Melbourne. Story continues below advertisement 0:28 AI-generated deepfake video shows Jewish celebrities denouncing Kanye West Burke said Heil Hitler promotes Nazism. The song, released in May, has been criticized as an antisemitic tribute to German dictator Adolf Hitler. It's also been banned in Germany and from online platforms including Apple Music, YouTube and Spotify. The song includes a direct sample from a speech Hitler gave in 1935 and repeats the slogan hailing the German dictator. 'He's been coming to Australia for a long time. He's got family here. And he's made a lot of offensive comments that my officials looked at again once he released the Heil Hitler song and he no longer has a valid visa in Australia,' Burke told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. 'If you're going to have a song and promote that sort of Nazism, we don't need that in Australia,' Burke added. 'We have enough problems in this country already without deliberately importing bigotry.' Story continues below advertisement — with files from Global News
