
Ultra Violette proves tech transformation is a team sport
Sustaining that level of growth meant rethinking the systems underneath it. In a recent NORA webinar, Ultra Violette's Head of Operations Jane Furphy and Annexa Director Matthew Owens shared the decisions that made it possible.
Before the tech, the team
By 2023, it was clear Ultra Violette had outgrown its original stack. With multiple instances of Xero and DEAR/Cin7 spread across regions, inventory visibility was limited, reporting was fractured and order management was increasingly manual. That would be a problem for any retailer but with a North American expansion looming, Ultra Violette couldn't afford any blind spots.
Still, the transformation didn't start with selecting an ERP. It started with building the right internal capability to lead the change.
"We had a fantastic finance manager - 2IC to the CFO - and we thought she would be great to lead the project... but we actually moved her from the finance team into my team so that we could make sure that she was a fully rounded finance and operational person who could help guide the team and understand both sides of that coin to be able to translate really easily between finance and operations."
That move helped unify decision-making across teams and kept the implementation grounded in how the business actually worked.
Cross-functional by necessity
Digital transformation efforts often fall apart when teams solve for their own needs in isolation - finance chasing reporting fixes, ops focused on fulfilment and eCommerce doing its own thing. At Ultra Violette, the process forced those silos to come down.
"Our e-commerce team were a big part of bringing in NetSuite and changing all of these systems," said Jane. "The rest of the business hadn't realised how big a part they would play."
That shared involvement helped build momentum across the business - and the move to embed finance capability within ops further bridged the gap. The result was faster decision-making and smoother implementation across teams that were far more connected than before.
The right system still matters – but it's not enough
With the internal structure in place, Ultra Violette partnered with Annexa to implement, NetSuite as their ERP and Celigo as their integration platform. The project spanned four markets, four warehouses, and a new EDI setup – all delivered in under six months, just ahead of Black Friday.
That speed was only possible because of the alignment behind the scenes. Jane credits the team's discipline around decision-making - particularly when it came to customisations. As she explained, the team encouraged users to spend time with the system before requesting changes. "If it really added value, we'd make the change but only where it was worthwhile."
Matthew echoed the approach, noting that while restraint is important, so is confidence in tailoring systems when it makes sense. "Try not to customise wherever possible - but don't be afraid to if it creates real value. UV struck that balance well."
A partner with the right fit
Annexa played a central role in reducing risk throughout the project. From aligning regional operations to managing complex integrations, their team worked closely with Ultra Violette to keep the rollout on track.
"We're detail people," said Jane. "We needed a partner who could work at that level of detail with us – someone we could reach quickly, who had local experience and who'd worked with businesses like ours before."
That partnership proved particularly valuable during the warehouse integration phase. With four 3PLs going live across multiple regions in the lead-up to peak season, fallback plans and real-time coordination were essential. The go-live landed cleanly.
A model for others scaling fast
Ultra Violette's transformation offers a useful counterpoint to the platform-first approach many retailers take. Technology matters but leadership, structure, internal alignment and external partners are what determine whether it actually delivers.

Australian companies expanding globally are driving growth in the HR technology sector, with workforce management platform Rippling reporting rapid momentum since its market entry in 2024. Product localisation and launches To address Australian regulatory and business needs, Rippling has introduced a suite of new tools. These include a Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) pre-built report template to support compliance, a warehouse and inventory management solution aimed at improving employee onboarding and offboarding processes, and a custom training course builder for employee learning and development. In addition, the company launched App Studio, a no-code platform allowing businesses to create internal applications rapidly - which local company Liven cited as saving them more than 20 hours a week. Desperate Aussie companies trying to lure Kiwi workers
By Bella Craig of RNZ Australian companies say they are not trying to poach NZ's workforce, but anybody who does fancy upping sticks for 'Straya's Northern Territory is being fair dinkum promised a chunk a' change that would make your Kiwi colleagues mad as a cut snake. Northern Territory industry leaders were at an Auckland job expo over the weekend to extol the virtues of the vast region of Australia. There were stalls looking to recruit police and corrections officers, hospitality workers, health professionals, tourism operators and construction and infrastructure workers. A number of Kiwis visiting the expo told Checkpoint the better pay and better work opportunities were tempting. But what will it mean for New Zealand's already declining workforce if they take up the offer? For Kiwis across the motu, it can be a dispiriting daily grind: apply for jobs, often receive no reply and when they do land an interview, queues of people are lining up for the same job. It can take hundreds of applications, and often many months, before something finally comes through. The unemployment rate in New Zealand is at a four-year high at 5.1 percent, so it is very competitive out there. But in Australia's Northern Territory, they are desperate for people to join their workforce and they have got Kiwis in their sights. On Saturday morning at Auckland's Manukau Due Drop events centre, the expo was bustling with hundreds of students, job hunters and people just looking for a change. They told Checkpoint finding a job in Aotearoa has become increasingly difficult. "I'm looking for other work at the moment and there's literally nothing out there, thousands of people applying for jobs that I wouldn't usually apply for. "A lot of people have applied for jobs - you see 150 people have applied, 200 people and you'll still be waiting for an answer." The Northern Territory's allure lies in its higher salaries, more job opportunities and the possibility of buying a home there. "I'm renting a two-bedroom house here for $550. At the same time when I see my sister she's in Alice Springs, she's renting a two-bedroom house for $350. "I feel really bad going into a job that pays so little, and I've studied so hard, where there's like a $20,000 difference if I start here or if I start there." Damien Charles from the Northern Territory Information and Communication Technology and Digital Services industry said there was a wider range of opportunities in the sector. A $30-40,000 pay bump also did not hurt. "Having listened to a number of people come through they're quite downcast about ICT and digital sector here in New Zealand, it's quite hard to get into the market even for people with existing skills and experience." Andrew Craven from the Northern Territory Police said they were looking for new recruits to join the police and experienced police who might want a change in scenery. First-year constables earn a salary of $111,000 compared to $83,000 here. After five years in the force that increases to $121,000 in Northern Territory, compared with $91,000 here. There is also a housing allowance of up to $34,000 for officers jumping the ditch. Craven said there were many similarities between the Northern Territory and New Zealand police forces. "We speak to the New Zealand Police a lot because we interview experienced police, particularly in the Northern Island, I think they have very similar problems." Dr Tanzil Rahman - Member of the Parliament of the Northern Territory for Fong Lim in Darwin's east - made the trip to New Zealand to help snag some Kiwi workers. He said the Northen Territory offered a different lifestyle, better pay, a higher-quality housing market and a warmer climate. "We know that New Zealanders are keen on Australia and do move to Australia and if you're looking for meaningful work opportunities that are well remunerated than again the north of Australia is a really good option." But for some Kiwis, the grass was not greener. "Australia's way too hot and there's too much drama there," said one. "People don't realise that in New Zealand we look after our retirees a lot better than they do in Australia." "I was offered about 1.7 times about what I would earn here in New Zealand. But what I love here about people in New Zealand is the people and the culture. We moved here when I was young from South Africa, so I call New Zealand my home and I'll stay," said another "We've got the most beautiful scenery in the world, great people and a wonderful future. I'd stay here," said a third. The Northern Territory job expos were held in Christchurch and Auckland over the past two weekends hosting jobs and information sessions for Kiwis keen to get a glimpse on life and work.

YouTube threatens to sue Aus govt if roped into social media ban
Google has been warned its threats to sue won't sway the potential late inclusion of YouTube in Australia's world-first social media ban for children. The tech giant wrote to Communications Minister Anika Wells declaring it was considering its legal position if its video sharing platform was included in the ban for children 16 and under. The letter, first reported by the Daily Telegraph, flagged the ban could be challenged on the grounds it restricts the implied constitutional freedom of political communication. Signals the Australian government was contemplating an "abrupt policy reversal" prompted Google to seek further clarity. "YouTube is a video sharing platform, not a social media service, that offers benefit and value to younger Australians," a YouTube spokesperson said. ADVERTISEMENT "We have written directly to the government, urging them to uphold the integrity of the legislative process and protect the age-appropriate experiences and safeguards we provide for young Australians." The social media ban is due to come into effect in December. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat were among platforms covered when legislation passed parliament. YouTube was exempted, in a move TikTok described as a "sweetheart deal". "The government was firm in its decision that YouTube would be excluded because it is different and because of its value to younger Australians," a YouTube spokesperson told AAP. "This intention was repeatedly made clear in its public statements, including to the Australian parliament." But e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant has recommended a rethink, citing research showing children were exposed to harmful content on YouTube more than any other platform. ADVERTISEMENT "The new law will only restrict children under the age of 16 from having their own accounts — not accessing content on YouTube or any other service through links from the school or in a 'logged-out' state," she told the National Press Club in June. "There is nothing in the legislation that prevents educators with their own accounts from continuing to incorporate school-approved educational content on YouTube or any other service just as they do now." Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took a dim view of Google's attempt to muscle in on the decision-making process. "The minister will make these assessments... independent of any these threats that are made by the social media companies," he told ABC TV on Sunday. "I say to them that social media has a social responsibility. "There is no doubt that young people are being impacted adversely in their mental health by some of the engagement with social media and that is why the government has acted." The early findings of an age-verification trial found technologies could block young kids from social media platforms, but not without loopholes. ADVERTISEMENT Platforms will face penalties worth up to AUS$50 million (NZ$54.5 million) if caught not taking reasonable steps to prevent children 16 and under from creating accounts.
