
Zuckerberg Commits to Vast AI Data‑Centre Investment
Meta attributes this bold move to robust financial footing, underpinned by nearly US $165 billion in revenue last year. The firm raised its capital expenditure estimate for 2025 to between US $64 billion and US $72 billion—up sharply from US $39.2 billion in 2024—as it reallocates resources into AI compute infrastructure.
To steer this operation, Meta has revamped its AI division into Superintelligence Labs. Leadership includes former Scale AI chief executive, Alexandr Wang, now the Chief AI Officer, and Nat Friedman, ex‑GitHub CEO, co‑helming research and product strategy. Their arrival comes in tandem with Meta's US $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, granting Wang influence at board level and spotlighting Meta's determination to dominate advanced AI research.

Industry analysts have expressed both admiration and caution. Gil Luria of D. A. Davidson observed that while AI has already boosted ad monetisation, this level of capital deployment is aimed at long‑term leadership in AI model development—a goal that may take years to yield returns. Similarly, a SemiAnalysis report suggests Meta is on track to be the first to deploy a gigawatt‑plus AI supercluster, signalling a critical edge in compute capacity.
This announcement coincides with fresh momentum in Meta's talent acquisition. The company has been aggressively recruiting leading researchers, reportedly offering nine‑figure compensation packages. This strategy reflects a wider talent war with rivals such as Google and OpenAI, seeking to attract top experts in machine learning and AI development.
Meta's ambitious infrastructure plans include a series of so-called 'titan clusters'. After Prometheus and Hyperion, several more mammoth centres are in the pipeline. Each facility is expected to underpin training and operation of next‑generation AI systems, including forthcoming iterations of the Llama series—now evolving through Llama 4.1 and 4.2 versions powering Meta AI—and future models capable of image‑to‑video generation and wearable integrations.
These data‑centre investments are deeply integrated with Meta's commercial strategy. Zuckerberg emphasised that strong cash flows from advertising operations provide the capital to support these superclusters while maintaining investor confidence. Wall Street responded positively to the announcement: Meta shares rose approximately 1 percent, contributing to a more than 20 percent increase in stock value year‑to‑date.
The significance of this move lies in its scale and intent. Previous spending on metaverse infrastructure had produced few visible breakthroughs, but this new push indicates a pivot toward AI supremacy. Zuckerberg noted that any lapses in the Llama 4 rollout and the departure of key AI figures had prompted a unified organisational overhaul, now re‑centred on Superintelligence Labs.
Benchmarks set by competitors like Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft have already seen each firm deploying megawatt‑class clusters in recent years. Meta's leap into gigawatt‑class data‑centre development arguably elevates the technological arms race to uncharted territory. Observers expect it to both accelerate compute innovation and escalate energy demands within cloud and AI sectors.
Yet observers warn that power consumption and environmental impact may attract regulatory attention, especially as data centres scale into gigawatt power draws, comparable to small cities. Meta's capacity to sustain operational costs and manage local energy infrastructure will be essential factors in long‑term viability.
Emerging trends include Meta's implied focus on user‑facing AI applications. Beyond training base models, the company hopes to integrate AI into consumer products—such as the Meta AI app, smart glasses, and automated advertising tools—serving dual objectives of revenue generation and ecosystem entrenchment.
Meta's competitors are expected to respond. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft's Azure capacity, and Google, with its TPU‑powered clusters, may accelerate investment to retain their lead. In such a high‑stakes environment, compute may prove as critical as algorithmic breakthroughs.

dnata rolls out autonomous vehicles in airport operations
dnata, a global air and travel services provider, has deployed a fleet of autonomous vehicles at Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International (DWC), introducing next-generation technology in ramp operations. dnata now operates six electric tractors - the EZTow model developed by TractEasy - at DWC. Traditionally, baggage is transported between the terminal and aircraft by human drivers, each operating under tight time constraints. The new autonomous vehicles streamline this process by towing up to four baggage containers (ULDs) at a time at speeds of up to 15 km/h, following pre-defined routes. With these new vehicles now in service, and as they become integrated into operations, staff who previously drove baggage tractors can be reassigned to more complex, value-added tasks, supporting faster turnarounds. At the same time, autonomous driving reduces the risk of human error, making airside operations safer for everyone on the ramp. The Dhs6 million (US$1.6 million) project deployment begins with Level 3 autonomy, which involves minimal human oversight. This will upgrade to Level 4 autonomy, defined by full self-driving capabilities in controlled environments, in early 2026. The rollout follows over a year of collaboration between dnata, TractEasy, Dubai Airports and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). The parties have been working together to create a new regulatory framework for autonomous vehicle operations in airside environments, which remain largely undefined at a global level. Beyond its day-to-day role, dnata will use this deployment as a testbed to trial and refine different operating models for autonomous ground handling. The aim is to identify the most effective approach for wider rollout, especially as DWC expands into what is set to become the world's largest airport, with capacity for up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. Emerging market debt set for growth amid global shifts, policy divergence
Image: Supplied While emerging markets (EM) debt was negatively impacted by the April 2 maximalist tariff announcements, after the delay in implementation and some backtracking, the asset class was able to bounce back. Of note, there was differentiation between sectors, with hedged local rates and EM foreign exchange outperforming other fixed income assets. Notably, the decline in the US dollar, as the broader market adjusted its outlook on US economic dominance, created opportunities in both emerging and developed markets. While there's been no major shift away from the US dollar and US assets yet, early signs suggest future investments could increasingly flow toward non- US developed and emerging markets. Recent events in the Middle East highlight how the market has compartmentalised geopolitical and other global macro uncertainties. While a worst-case scenario did not materialise, the markets did not sell off, even before the 'cease-fire'. That is not to say that we should not incorporate tail risks, but to recognise that the current market context favors bottom-up carry opportunities. There will be performance differences across sectors and issuers, depending on how each is fundamentally impacted or able to adapt. The attractiveness of EM debt is currently underpinned by meaningful structural and cyclical shifts emanating from policy and growth dynamics in both the US and across emerging markets. Global growth appears to be moving from US-led dominance to a more balanced global landscape. While the US continues a phase of meaningful fiscal profligacy, trade protectionism and monetary policies, inflation in the market remains sticker than the rest of the world. In contrast, EMs are benefiting from increasing growth differentials as US policy is producing a larger drag on the US than the rest of the world. While growth expectations have been lowered across the globe, there are reasons to believe US growth will slow more meaningfully than EM. Emerging market fundamentals remain relatively resilient EM fundamentals have remained relatively resilient, outperforming developed market counterparts recently. While fiscal deficits remain negative, 12-month rolling fiscal deficits are showing improvement in many countries, keeping public debt trajectories stable and driving credit upgrades across numerous EM sovereigns. A weaker US dollar would naturally reduce debt-GDP ratios across EM sovereigns and create a more favorable external environment. EM central bank policy trajectory also remains supportive as EM central banks, having front-loaded rate hikes post-Covid, are making gains in inflation and have less concerns for their currencies — with room to ease — supporting domestic demand. EM spreads are at the tighter end of the range, with broad dispersion persisting between credit rating categories. The attraction of hard currency EM assets is the attractive yield/carry opportunities and relative value compared to other credit markets, as well as the ability to identify winners and losers given the global macro context and country specific fundamentals. Even in the second quarter, EM high yield sovereigns did quite well. In a fragmented global landscape, hard currency EM debt offers a rare combination of yield, diversification and macro resilience. With US policy uncertainty rising and global capital flows shifting, the potential for EM outperformance should make this an opportune time to reassess strategic allocations and consider increasing exposure to this under-owned asset class. EM rates have scope to do well amid slowing growth, reasonably behaved FX and balance of power, though a spike in oil prices could curtail rate cuts in the short term. During the second quarter, nearly every EM currency strengthened against the US dollar, despite higher US yields driven by increasing real yields. Looking ahead, a weaker but mixed dollar trend could offer plenty of relative value opportunities. And finally, China's economic backdrop appears stable, which should keep volatility low and support higher beta cyclical currencies. Clear headwinds persist, including uncertainty regarding the timing and impact of the trade war, US-China trade relations and a possible re-escalation of events in the Middle East. However, the re-mapping of the world order also presents opportunities. Technicals remain relatively supportive for the asset class as dedicated investors are 'light-risk' in general, and crossover investors may be attracted to the appeal of the yield and diversification. Meta to invest hundreds of billions in superintelligence efforts
Meta Platforms plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in computing infrastructure to advance its superintelligence ambitions in artificial intelligence (AI), Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday. Writing on social media platform Threads, Zuckerberg said Meta would build one of the most "elite and talent-dense teams in the industry" and had the capital from its business to support the plans. "We're also going to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into compute to build superintelligence," he said. Superintelligence refers to a hypothetical AI system that is capable of outperforming the human brain. Zuckerberg unveiled plans for massive data centres to support the effort. One facility, called Prometheus, is expected to go online in 2026. Another, Hyperion, could eventually consume up to 5 gigawatts of power - enough to supply electricity to more than four million average US households, according to experts.
