Tony Gilroy Knowingly Went Against Canon for K-2SO's Origin in ‘Andor'

Tony Gilroy Knowingly Went Against Canon for K-2SO's Origin in ‘Andor'

Gizmodo22-05-2025

For years, we were led to believe that when it came to Star Wars, there was one canon and that was it. Every book, comic, TV show, and movie was all supposed to co-exist to tell a single, overarching story. And for the most part, that has been true. But in a few cases, filmmakers have overridden work done by fellow creators, and the best example yet comes in Andor.
In 2017, a few months after the release of Rogue One, Marvel released a one shot comic book called 'Rogue One – Cassian & K-2SO Special 1.' Written by Duane Swierczynski and illustrated by Fernando Blanco, the comic explored how Cassian and K2 met. And, for several years, that version of their origin story was considered the truth because it was part of Star Wars canon. Then, of course, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy gave the okay for Tony Gilroy to dig back into those characters with Andor. Fast forward to season two and the origin of K2 and Cassian's friendship on Andor is completely different from the one in the canon. Recently, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the creator explained why that was.
'Canon, I usually try to deal with it, and I'm really sympathetic and into it,' Gilroy said. '[But] I was annoyed to find out somebody, in the interim between Rogue and that, had written an origin story for K-2SO. And it's like, 'No I'm not paying attention to that. We're not doing that.'' And so, that was that. You can watch the clip, cued up, here.
For Star Wars fans, I think this is a very interesting issue to talk about. First of all, clearly everyone wants creatives like Tony Gilroy to make a show however they want to make a show. That he was not just beholden to, but embraced, other canon moments such as the Ghorman Massacre, Yavin-4, Mon Mothma's speech, etc., shows that he wanted his story to fit in the overall world. Also, tens of thousands of people read that comic and, potentially, millions of people watch the show. There's no real, good reason to be beholden to a fact such a small number of people know about, especially if you don't agree with it or it doesn't fit.
And yet, that has always been the beauty of this modern Star Wars canon. While there was clearly a lot to love about the era of the Expanded Universe and how every story could be unique and contradictory, there was also something exciting about knowing every single Star Wars thing you picked up fit together.. And yet, that has slowly been changing. Theming around Star Wars Galaxy's Edge is one big thing. The animated series Tales of the Jedi, which adapts Ahsoka's origin in contrast to a novel, is another. And who knows what else could be coming in the future?
It's a fun debate to have, and ultimately, I'm fine with Gilroy changing K2's origin to his liking. It's not like I can't still enjoy the comic version. One is just the more accepted version now. What are your feelings on all this? Let us know below.

Two major events held in Minneapolis over the weekend

Two major celebrations and a half-million visitors are taking place across Minneapolis. Twin Cities Pride and Somali Independence Day are bringing an air of celebration to the city. "The energy is incredible. Everyone's happy to be here. Everybody's celebrating each other," said Sophia Turner of Minneapolis. "We want people to understand who we are," said Ayub Hassan, who attended Somali Day as the owner of Blue Horn Somali Tea. "What we're highlighting is our freedom." Somali Day commemorates the country's separation from colonial rule in 1960. Both events combined brought roughly over 500,000 individuals to Minneapolis that's roughly the population of Wyoming. "Everyone can be themselves; if you're an ally or part of the LGBTQIA+ community," said Pritchard. "The community we're celebrating can be at a disadvantage, so it's important," said Turner. With both events going, safety is a high priority. Metro Transit even expanded services and offering free rides throughout the weekend of the festivities. "Happy Pride!" said Turner. "Happy Somali Independence Day!" said Iqra Mohamed of Minneapolis. Minnetrista resident Mike Schoeneman brought his girls to both events. "To celebrate the cultures and everything and to show my girls the differences too," said Schueneman. Pride continues on Sunday, June 29 with a parade starting at 11 a.m.

Reese Cooper Spring 2026 Menswear Collection

At 27, Reese Cooper has officially entered that stage in life where he needs to be ready for the wedding circuit. But when his cousin tied the knot in South Carolina recently, he found himself in the ironic position, after nearly a decade of designing, of having to hit a 'mass-pirational' retailer for a last-minute suit on his way to the airport. 'I was like, 'This is ridiculous, I need to fix that,'' the designer recalled in a showroom in the Upper Marais where both his namesake menswear collection and his lighter-priced RCOS line were on display. For spring, Cooper set about recalibrating outdoorsy California casual with a more mature, tailored, and mostly unisex offer that will easily pass muster in more elevated settings while still retaining sporty touches. Ripstop cords cinched the waist on blazers, a trench and a Harrington jacket in nylon; oversized cargo pockets gave button-downs or a printed poncho a fresh functionality, yet also looked crisp and sophisticated on a black, white and red houndstooth. As ever, his signature carabiner, a piece custom-designed by a former aerospace engineer befriended over Instagram, provided a throughline. Of his process, the designer explained, 'My favorite thing personally is to take something that you would traditionally find, then take the right thing and put it in the wrong place or the other way around.' Not that anything looked out of place here. Last Tuesday, Cooper's posse of chosen family, among them the stylist Savannah White, traveled with him an hour north of L.A. to the Angeles National Forest. There, his models posed on a rock in the San Gabriel River, in a location the designer had discovered on a hike. In a telling detail, he shot this lookbook with a thumbs-up from his friends over at the local Forest Service (look for new developments in that budding relationship next season). It speaks volumes about Cooper's interest in building on community, a philosophy he absorbed from Virgil Abloh. "If you're doing something fun that people want to be around, that should be the focus," he said. One doesn't often hear that during the fashion week swirl. Let's see where that takes him next.

WWE commentator Corey Graves made the announcement while discussing Morgan's injury on Raw Monday. Advertisement Morgan is currently one half of the Women's Tag Team Champions alongside her partner Raquel Rodriguez. WWE has not announced what will happen to the titles. Morgan suffered a dislocated shoulder June 16 during her match against Kairi Sane on Raw. The incident happened shortly after the match started when Morgan received a single-leg takedown from Sane. The move was performed properly, however, Morgan yelled in pain and the match was immediately paused. File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI WWE medical personnel came ringside to check on Morgan, who was escorted to the back. The match was canceled, with Sane winning by forfeit. Morgan had recently attacked Hall of Famer Nikki Bella with the segment appearing to set up a match between the two; however, the bout will now most likely not take place.
